Toughest player to pull on a pair of boots was a guy named Alan Woodman
who played a heap of reserve games for Geelong, quit the VFL when he was about 26 and went onto captain/coach several country teams.
He had a similar physique to todays professional footballer and would play just as hard- played with a broken jaw for three plus quarters for Grovedale against St.Albans in the early eighties and then booked himself into hospital after the game to have it wired up
Anyone playing with or against him in the GFL at the time would remember Alan- he trained the boys hard and himself harder.

Over here in Port Pirie for Port Bulldogs had a bloke named Ben Lee.

Tough inside midfielder, would never back down from a contest.

Just remember one game where he was having a bit of a barney with a west augusta bloke, who clocked him fair on the jaw. Benny spat the blood out and told the guy to hit him again. The other bloke gave a couple more jumper punches then backed down.

I did'nt play against him or with him but i was t'manager to him a 'gentleman' by the name of ASHLEIGH BROWN certainly left his mark on the league for the season he spent here last year, previously played with collingwood u19's & 2nds 91' (under L matthews) and what i've heard then wen't to finley and thereafter i think to Kyabram, before the season (05) @ Millicent in the wbfl he was coach at Latrobe in the ntfl in Tas and funnily enough he was highly regarded and still is (back there in 06 w East devenport). He put 4 guys in hospital @ casterton (not behind play ********) it was like a production line at holdens ! they were lining up 1 after the other to have a crack at him to no avail boof boof boof boof - down down down down while the rest of the team was building up point's for the melee rule !.Definatly the toughest i've seen and one of the best coaches i've seen at country level, pity we didnt get him 4 years ago when his legs were right.
Coached by Browny at Latrobe. Very hard man. Knees were buggered but still nailed them from outside 50. Nobody was game to fight him on or off field. Definitely have some stories.

Coached by Browny at Latrobe. Definitely a very hard man. And was banging them from outside 50 with bung knees. Haven't seen anyone tougher. Nobody would fight him on or off the field. His eyes used to roll. Had some bloody hard training sessions under him.
