List Mgmt. Trade and FA Discussion - 2025

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Following on from posters feedback and the popularity of the Contracts/Trade/Draft catch all thread, it’s been decided to separate each aspect of that megathread into smaller, separate streams.

This will allow more focused discussion on each aspect of list management that will make it easier for posters to find information on and/or add their own views.

There will be four list management threads overall:

Draftees for players not yet on an AFL list
• Trades/FA - for players on other AFL lists that we might want (this thread)
Contracts - for players on our list that we want to keep, delist or trade
All of the above - the existing thread that will be retained for posts that cover more than one facet, are general shitposting, wanting to discuss previous trades, draft picks etc

The first three, specific threads will be closely moderated to ensure discussion stays on topic whilst the fourth catch all thread will allow posters to be more creative in how they express themselves

With all that in mind, this is the Trades and FA thread and the following link(s) might be useful:

With the speculation that we are heavily into the Warner brothers, I thought I would layer them both in the Age by Position chart.

Note that we currently have
  • 37 on the senior list
  • 4 on the rookie list
  • 2 on the Cat B list.

The out of contract players are in red - all 13 of them

We currently have 1 list spot open (can be senior or rookie) with 3 players at the club vying for the train on spot.

There is a possible additional spot if Sheed is placed on the LTI list or retires now. No impact on the salary cap if Sheed retires now so I am not expecting a decision soon.

I have included Duggan, Chesser, Ginbey, Johnston and Grego as Utility players as a catch all.

What it does show is that we have refilled our engine room.

Is there a world we keep our top 5 pick and get Warner?

Probably requires Hawthorn to miss finals meaning we have a top 10 pick plus some combination of future picks to offer

a lot depends on where Hawks finish and where the top end draftees fall.
If Hawks finish 6th, Warner for Hawks 1st(13), Hawks 2nd(31) and WC F1st(top 6) would be fair value?

There is no world where the Swans don’t demand our best pick for Warner and rightfully so. Imagine a team coming for one of our top 3 players but refusing to include a top 5 pick they already have. They need a stack of points for three very good academy prospects. They’ll probably still need to trade it down if they want enough points for all of them.

The haggling is going to come with what goes to Sydney with it in the event of a trade. Giving them a big points boost using our 2R and 3R picks this year may mean we can hang onto the Hawks 1R and keep our 2026 hand intact.

I don’t see how this works for anyone.

Whatever ends up then better pick between us and hawks will go to Sydney.

If Swans need points it might also include a 2nd and 3rd round pick.

If we finish 15th and Hawks finish 5th

We’d have

4, 14, 22, 31, 40, 49

Warner for 4, 22, 49

Maybe we could ask for a F3 or something.

Would be a bit more than what Lions gave up for Neale

Neale trade was 6, 19, 55 for Neale and 30.

probably and this maybe how it plays out, we don't have our own 3rd round pick but was assuming you meant Hawks 3rd.
Your scenario leaves Hawks 1st, Hawks 2nd, and all 2026 picks intact which is still significant.
Projecting to draft Curtin takes Hawks 1st, Hawks 2nd should be able to cover either Banfield or Walley and leave us with a bit of trading to do to match a bid for the other, 3rd round pick probably gets it done.
GC will have 3 draft picks between roughly 6 & 12 and have 2 or 3 1st rounders to get points for of their own placing WC in a position to trade our 2026 draft hand to get the best available pick from them, maybe a top 10 for WC F1st and F3rd to grab someone of the quality you have mentioned before.
Rodriguez, Lindsay, Cumming, Hibbins-Hargreaves, some quality in the Ginbey, B Allan, Hewett draft range.

Gee our list spots are tight….and we have 6 picks in the first 3 rounds.

I’d definitely skip the MsD this year as many of the guys who know they’re gonna get picked ask for 18 month contracts.

Of that list, could see Cole, Hunt, Sheed, Rawlinson being delisted. Cripps might be in his last season.

Bazzo and Chesser really need to show they can get on the park and offer a bit.

Then there’s some big calls on Oscar and Kelly.

I think we also have a couple of decent NgA prospects and Charlie Banfield as a F/S.

If we are gunning for both Warner bros spots will be very, very tight.

Yeah if the Hawks miss could probably bundle up the 2nds for one of GC picks too. Power/Pies/Suns all a fair chance to miss finals.

Pick 20, 28, 49 = 1,842 worth around pick 6. Same as where the Suns pick landed last year.

There is their two top 10 picks there. 6 + 10 for Warner

I think Warner manager is the same as Bakers so he will probably demand we hand over our first pick anyway.

I meant all the 2R and 3R picks we had, so our 2R and the Hawks 2R and 3R. Posted something similar in a different thread but essentially if:

SYD: 2nd
HAW: 9th
WCE: 17th

OUT: Pick 2,20,28,46
IN: Pick 17, Warners x 2

Take best mid and Curtin with picks 10 and 17. Hopefully our NGAs/FS slip into the 3R where we essentially get them for free and don’t go into points deficit.

Similar currency to the Lachie Neale trade Dom sheed pocket mentioned who would be a roughly comparable player as a then 25yo mid. Would Swans want more? Probably.

Nuclear off-season scenario for the Eagles.

If Harley wants out and picks the Bombers and we walk Oscar.

We could own 6 top 10 picks. Not ideal scenario imo but one that could possibly play out.

Pick 2 (our pick)
Pick 3 (Oscar compo)
Pick 4-6 (Dons pick)
Pick 6-8 (Suns pick from bundling the later picks)
Pick 6-10 (Melb pick via Essendon)
Pick 6-10 (Hawks pick)

This off-season could go in any direction more than most for the Eagles.

Adding Warners + Starcevich while retaining Oscar + Harley (my ideal) plus Sheldrick would be nice too, he is OOC.

What happens if Warner has an average season in [emoji638][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]]][emoji638][emoji6[emoji640][emoji637]]? Are we already committed to him?

He had a pretty average season in [emoji638][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]]][emoji638][emoji639] after a breakout [emoji638][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]]][emoji638][emoji638].

Ironically coming off a GF thumping.

I think we know enough about warners ability that it wouldn’t scare us off. Might change the numbers on the contract slightly or the trade value, but he’s a known quantity.

ok, getting pick 17 back from Sydney makes that reasonable.
If here is a definite player/mid that WC want in the top 10 they could then trade 17 and F2nd to GC for a pick around top 10.

We’d also still have the Hawks 1R. GCS have Uwland whom I have challenging Sharp for pick #1 as well as top 10 prospects Patterson and Addinsall. White is also eligible for their academy picks but I really think he’s being touted as a lot better than what he is and is also eligible for Melbourne’s NGA. Whilst they are already flush with picks (again) there’s no way 17 and a F2 gets us a top 10 pick from GCS. They’ll trade their picks down in this draft to maximise their points then trade their leftovers into next year. Again.

I thought they couldn't do that rubbish this year with the changes to the points system. don't they have to match bids with picks from the round they are bid on?
Never mind I went and looked up the changes.

For 2025, the main changes will be:

  • The revised draft value index and bidding system will be introduced. The new DVI will make it harder for clubs to stockpile draft selections to match multiple bids on Academy and father-son selections.
  • As part of this, the 20 per cent points discount applied to matched bids will be reduced to 10 per cent. However, the AFL will continue to review this and assess whether it should apply to all or some of father-son, NGA and northern Academy players.
  • The new DVI will see points attached to only the first 54 picks (down from the current system of the first 73 picks). There will be more than 10,000 points shaved off the value of the next DVI.
  • Future trading of picks will be extended to two years in advance.

No they just reduced the amount later picks were worth by adjusting the scale down. With same ladder positions GCS already have picks 6,10,16,24,55 and 60. They’ll still be able to trade down those 1Rs and end up with another huge surplus for next year.

nice scenario but cant see either of Harley or Oscar leaving.
I don't want our side to do a NM or Richmond rebuild, we are already 3 years into ours and adding Warners & Starcevich would be massive in the build and fast track considerably.
Adding quality and removing fringe players will make our team much better in a similar mode to 2024.

Yeah I can’t tell which way it will go. Interesting times
