Considering he would want in excess of $1 million, I'd probably pass. Great player but I'd be confident in Naughton becoming out own version of him. Would much prefer to target quick mids and forwards with any cap room.
I like Naughton, but he has a LONG way to go to get anywhere near Macgovern in the future. Especially his kicking.

That said, with Naughton, Young, Trengove, Cordy, and Roberts all on the list and able to play best 22 footy, it would be a waste of cap space going after him. We need a gun mid or mid/small forward.

McGovern putting his contract off till next year. I wonder if we still have that Hurley money...
We don't need any more KPDs - if we had Hurley money to splash around, I'd take Gaff over anyone else gettable from the west

If we did get Hurley, who would we have taken instead of Naughton ?? Purely hypothetical of course.... Just a sliding doors discussion for a Thursday....

Beveridge didn't even want Naughton this year, after getting Trengove. Not sure who Dalrymple would have taken, but Higgins would be nice right now.

The next on our list was Ed Richards. Rated as 8 and 9 respectively (apparently).

What an excellent recruitment team we had. Could not be happier with Naughton and Richards.

Apart from Stringer and MacRae, does anyone else remember out first 2 picks getting a run at it like these two lads this year? Cooney and Ray perhaps?

Ray played 7 in his first year for what it is worth, and was certainly pretty ordinary for pick 4, obviously. Cooney a gun from the start.

That was our best hand at the draft ever (2003) and it was one of the weakest top-end drafts ever. Cooney was a standout, then Andrew Walker and then not much else.
Any other year Ray would have gone at 10-20 ... or even later. :(

Sorry mate but don't believe for one minute Naughton was not best available for us.
There will be plenty on Higgins types around every year.

I thought the rumour was Bev wanted Naughty but Dal wanted someone else (possibly Richards?) Not the other way around. Naughty pretty much sums up bevs ideal player.

Either way who cares we got em both!

My favourite thing about Naughton is he is the first KPP we have drafted in a long time who can safely take marks on the regular. Also, he is pretty well developed already which is handy for a club who are often lamented for failing to develop their KPP.

Wrong in that Bev did want Naughton, or Wrong in that Higgins would not be good right now?

One word responses may be great for brevity, crap for clarity.
Bev didn’t want Naughton is wrong

Bev was sitting at the trade table do u think Dal would downright over rule the senior coach?

We got the best KPP in the draft and people are complaining?
Definitely not complaining. I think he will play 150 games for us, which is a win whatever way you look at it. Just saying that it's not exactly a given he turns out as good as Macgovern at this point. Especially his kicking which is pretty average (although definitely not alone).
