What is the word on Gaff? Is he get-able? Sure more than Kelly.... and fills a need now. Personally I'd like to see the Dogs be more aggressive chasing point of need players at end of year...
He will be a target for clubs like the Saints and North, Collingwood even - for various reasons.

Him and Kelly would be fantastic additions, but we will have to pay for them.

I just don't think Gaff adds much to our side. He doesn't push others into more preferred positions. He doesn't offer a goal scorer. He doesn't offer defensive prowess. He doesn't offer aerial superiority. He doesn't offer elite skill. He offers solid, if somewhat safe, disposal; elite work rate; outstanding ball winning capacity and good footy smarts, all wrapped up in a very outside package. I think his cost outweighs what he'd add to our side.

What would we have to give up to attain him .?

i wouldnttjink he be worth more than 550-650k a year.

Gaff doesn’t fill a need so desperately that we should shell out $700,000 on him. Lachie is playing some great footy for us at the moment.
nothing against Lachie. However other than lachie we dont have a player similar to him or anything coming through

I reckon we’re ok. All we need is time. Let’s just accept we’re going to be middle of the road for the next 1-3 years and then we have another big crack it. I was a big rap for our premiership squad but I reckon this one is as good if not better. I’ve not seen a more talented list of talls on our list than this group.

JJ, Caleb and Dale are all great but I see them as impact players. none of them are genuine midfielders. They are more the type of player you want the ball in their hands forward of center to make that kick into the forward line or at goal.

Gaff is a Hunter type, consistently in the game racking up disposals and delivering the ball to the likes of the players you have mentioned.

It must be me who probably rates him more than others however I dare say he would provide so much to our team.

Gaff doesn’t win his own ball. If he goes to a Saints he’ll be rubbish. We’ve got Hunter who plays as well if not better than Gaff.

Saints should throw the kitchen sink at Dylan Shiel.
To be fair, we have plenty of ball winners but do we have enough players who can run and deliver ? We aren't looking at players like Gaff primarily to be extractors, we are looking to deliver to our forwards advantage. And to work back in defence.

Thoughts ??

Considering the relative prices, I would go Atley over Gaff.

Looking ahead, we've got these spots filled:
Tall backs: Naughton, Young, Trengove, Adams, Roberts
Mid-sized backs: Wood, Cordy
Rebounding backs: JJ, Williams, Crozier, Richards, Biggs?

Inside mids: Wallis, Libba
In/Out mids: Bont, Macrae, Mclean, Dahl, Dunkley
Outside mids: Hunter, Dale, Daniel, Lipinski?

Rucks/2nd Tall Forward: English, Roughead

Tall forward/2nd Ruck: Boyd, Schache
Mid forwards: Gowers

I would suggest they should all be around in 3 years, and at least in our top 25 players.

That leaves:
Morris, Dickson, Picken, Redpath, Clay Smith - probably all retired
Collins, Jong, Honeychurch, Webb, Campbell, R.Smith - Likely delisted
Others untried.

So to rise back up the latter I think we really need at least a few more AFL quality mids, and probably 4-5 AFL quality forwards. That relies on English, Boyd and Schache all becoming clear best 22 players as well, so we will no doubt need another project forward in a year or two.

Essential we regain our stoppage and contested possession game. I’m not sure what it is right now but before today we were 16th in clearances and 18th in contested possessions. I still think we should pursue Wines and regain our status as the best midfield in the league.

What do you think of Schache?

He does now. He's actually been pretty god in the last 12 months for that.
Gaff would be fantastic for us, but do we have the coin to entice him over? Saints and North would have more cap space so if it's purely $$$ we're not in the hunt.

Listening to SEN prior to the game yesterday I thought Daisy Pierce made a very good point regarding our recruitment last offseason. She Highlighted that Trengrove, Schache were in the reserves and Crozier no impact as yet. I think this is a very fair observation. She wasn’t being overly critical but rightly asking the question. Good analysis for once.
