not "right over the top" at all .. the team needs experience not less of it . To get second rounds and even to an extent thirds this year you aren't getting it by trading rubbish

Cal Twomey alwo said this is a good draft but no superdraft ..
Experience like Trengove?

No more experienced plodders.

Quality kids with skill and preferably speed and the ability to kick.

with zero experience you get melbourne of the last 10 years but ok if that is what you want
Like the Hawks.Oh they get players like Impey
we get Trengrove.Would like Omeara as well instead of Crozier.Mitchell instead of Suckling.
Kids or castoffs.I CHOOSE KIDS

No we don't, and that is what Melbourne did years ago .. how did that go for them?
Melbourne cut their senior players and tried to get kids to lead the club with little on field guidance, it didn't work.

They also downgraded top picks - it worked in the case of picking up Hogan in the mini draft, missing Josh Kelly by downgrading a pick two into pick nine was a disaster.

In the post-Clayton era we've got a good strike rate with top picks so I definitely want a pick before a West-bid.

You do know that each draft year has different players in it, right? This year is supposedly a superdraft, so if we see real value at picks in the 30s and maybe 40s, then we should try and get a few picks.
The top 20 is supposed to be very good, but after that it's a regular draft.

We're a very young list as it is, I don't want to lose more mature players than we have to (save for guys clearly not rated by the club).

Oh i see.. so you want two guys who are being overpaid, one who's knees are next to shot .. one more injury and he is gone .. both of which we did not have the capacity or draft picks to get .. O'meara deal in particular was ridiculous and they will pay for that in the future

So what's the plan then? Dump Wallis and Dahl, get two second round picks, use those picks on West and Khamis (who we'd get anyway) and then somehow trade for more picks in the second round after that? You'd need to lose three quality players just to get one usable second round pick.

And that is the problem .. just take the deficit next year where we have more f/s coming through. We will wipe the deficit out at some point anyway

At some point, there lies the problem. I could take another 5 years to wipe that deficit. We had the same thing occur in 2011 when we were on the down trend and look at the spuds we drafted in the 2009-2012 period. Until we have more game time in the current young ones that are playing, getting rid of Dahlhaus and Willis IMO is cutting the nose to spite the face.

Not sure what yout point is here .. I am against cutting Wallis and Dahlhaus for "points"

While we have fatyer sons and NGAs for the next few years the need might not be as pressing to cut players for points

Not sure people understand this argument to be honest

And of course any picks we get for Wallis and/or Dahl are dramatically downgraded if we get a FA of our own.

My point was exactly that. If a player is not rated by our club and rated by another, we jumped at the chance for a second rounder or whatever it may be. We can't just say no deal because we need experience. Each trade on its merits and nothing on or off the table.

Although I agree it is a good thought, we need to think about what a second rounder would get us this year.

Cause we will get West, the second rounder will simply go to making points to match someone else's bid. It might mean we get a better selection in the 4th or 5th round but it won't get us a selection in the second round.

Alternatively it could be the difference between us going into deficit in the first round next year if a bid comes for West in the first round and we don't have the points this year to snaffle him. I might consider it in those circumstances, depending on where we think he will be selected this year.

I wish we could just go back to the good old days where a father/son sets you back a third round pick

If we trade McLean this year than that gives us pick 12 and 44 in 2019. Use 12 on West and save 44 for the 2020 draft, adding CPI, gives us pick 36, which we use, with Webb to upgrade to pick 28. We swap 28 with Carltons 34 and 44: meaning we have 3 cracks at potential current average 14 year olds in 2021.
