If we get Darley and Sch
Wood is safe, howard as a flanker
jj is cemented.
pearce to develop to a midfield role and same for jong
If the idea is Pearce to play midfield then there is even more pressure on him.

Griff, Cooney, Boyd, Libba, Wallis, Smith, Stevens, Macrae, Stringer, Prudden, Dahl and others in the way next year.

You see the point I'm trying to make though yeah :) Depth is great though, hope Pearce can throw his hat into the ring for selection every week.

I'm one of his supporters :D I really think he can make it. But you do make a good point, he was drafted the same year as Talia, Smith, Dickson who are all already best 22. Campbell who was a rookie that year has gone past him, Austin and Jong were also taken that year. Redpath and Greenwood too but i'm amazed they were retained.

Pearce I think will have another year where he will be given some leniency. After that he's got to be at the very least pushing for a spot in the 22.
People always talk about our 2012 draft but damn our 2011 draft was pretty damn good too.

Difference is that Macrae, Stringer, Hrovat, Hunter all look like they can be stars and 200+ game players. And Prudden :p

2011 while Dickson, Smith, Talia all look like being good players for us, Talia is the only one I can see as being a "star".

He was a Carlton supporter, and he seems to have indicated that he wants to go to Carlton. He hasn't flat out refused. But if he wants to go to Carlton, but he's forced to go to the Dogs, usually that doesn't end well. He could resent us, refuse to play, refuse to train etc.
He wouldn't do those things if he wants a career in AFL football.

Don't sell Smith to short Timtam, really he has been remarkable so far in his short career .

I love the guy, and reckon he'll be a great player for us.

But compare him to Hrovat, Stringer, Hunter or Macrae. Do you see him reaching the same heights as those players could? I don't. He'll perenially be a great, but underrated, player.

Smith could quite easily be our version of Kieren Jack. Just needs to tidy up his footskills and he'll be a very good player. Don't underestimate the value of having a fast, incredibly strong and contested ball winner who kicks goals every week in our team. Smith will be a very good player.

I honestly think he compares quite well to those guys, it was only his second year this year I really like Smith think he can be an absolute gun. Some of his games early this year (including nab cup) were awesome, he is just such a beast in the contest and always stands his ground in tackles and gets the handball away, he is quick and chases and tackles really well but he can also cover some ground with the ball and has some genuine goal sense, while his kicking isn't perfect more often than not it gets to where he needs it to go and will only improve. I just really think he has a lot of improvement in him and he is already pretty good for such a young player.

I can see Smith becoming elite more than I can see Macrae getting there tbh. Know I'm almost alone in my views of Macrae though so don't expect many to agree.
I'm still wavering on Macrae but I think he can get there. But I can see the 4 I mentioned becoming better players than Smith.

I think that he can be a gun as well. I just don't think to the levels of the other 4 mentioned. We're blessed to have so many young guns. And they're all ours! All of them! Muahahahahahahahaha :footy:

Smith is a goal kicking mid. They are hard to find. He just bursts packs and hurts teams and is so good at finding the goals. I would get rid of Macrae before Smith. Not sure why but Macrae hasn't impressed me much at all. Still young and im sure will grow into a quality player.

He will become a beast in a year or two, and while he may not have the polish of the boys Timtam mentions, he is going to give our midfield some serious grunt.
Your comparison with Jack is a good one , let's hope he is as good.

Boy that is harsh on Macrae , that boy knows how to play football !
Whether he ends a star is still to be proven, but if he's not a 200 gamer, I haven't seen one.

This draft group is soft after the top 5 and then drops off again at about 25.... I can only see 7 or 8 good players in it. It is a shame the AFL don't allow us to trade for picks in next years draft. I would love an extra 1/2/3 picks in the first 3 rounds. Much better KPP's. My worry is that we will improve too much this year to get one of the top 3 KPF's....
Crameri will be useful but our number 1 goal must be to get our young brigade up to speed with endurance, kicking technique and muscle mass. I would much rather spend the Crameri money on development staff and on keeping Griffin for as long as we can. Crameri is a better forward than any on our team BUT development must be our number 1 priority. Glad we have our own VFL team, just hope we don't squander these picks on the wrong sort of player.
Our game is going to evolve into more of a 1 on 1 game, as teams try to avoid extra men behind the ball. Our recruiting has recognised this and we target a 1 on 1 player almost every pick. Now it is up to us to develop them.

I think he will be a great player for us. Don't get me wrong. Just so far i don't think his done too much. Struggled abit with the pace and his kicking has been poor. He will improve as his tank does and as he gets more games. Just saying i think Smith has shown alot more.

Yeah , I know it's all in the eye of the beholder.
But how great is it we are talking who is ahead of who , when all these young boys are going to make it.
That's what I think anyway ----- best batch of young players we have ever had in 50 years I have followed this club !

I've seen a few folks suggesting this, but like any "futures" trading, it is high risk. Let's say we do a deal with Melbourne for their 1st rounder in 2014 (on 2013 form you'd expect a very early number), but Roosy pulls a rabbit out of the hat and they finish 5th (stop laughing it's hypothetical!), so we get #13. Why/How can you make a trade when the value of what you receive is unknown ? BTW, if that option became available, everybody would be wanting to trade with Richmond...:p
