Nothing wrong with discussing Farren but if people start comparing him to Daniel Cross, yes we should close the thread.
They were both exceptional in the air for their heights, it's a big
compliment i love players who can compete in the air and hold
there own on the ground as well. Context people please !

I think the forwards were pretty happy that the ball was in our team's hands as opposed to the opposition's something that Cross excelled at making sure of.
He wasn't a perfect player but he was a successful cog in a pretty excellent midfield that deserves far more respect than he gets on this board. Much like Matthew Boyd until this year.
I would think Crossy gets plenty of respect on this board , including from me. But I have mentioned before I was told clubs were more than happy Cross being the last in the chain , he simply could not hurt you kicking the footy.
That info by the way came from someone that has been with the Sydney list , draft team for many years.
He really only confirmed what your eyes tell you.

Sorry but we are off topic.

Agree. Loved Cross but similar to M Boyd (the mid) clubs weren't too worried how much they had the ball as the hurt factor was minimal. Interestingly read some similar feedback about J Grant.

What is fantastic now though is that in Bont the opposite is true, clubs should fear him having the ball. My only concern coming into last season was his tendency to just bomb it. But he has shown he has a laser guided 50m boot. If Stringer can play more mid with Libba, our midfield is truly fearsome.

For this this reason I'm hoping we get Burton (along with a decent tall) as he could release Stringer more into the midfield (say 60% fwd, 40% mid). Stringers explosion out of the midfield against Norf was an epic taster.

Cross had way more than one elite trait.

Courage, handballing skills, clearance work. His work ethic and ability to get the most out of himself is one of the best I've ever seen.

To compare him to Ray is both stupid and ridiculous as they are both completely different types of players with completely different types of skill sets and applications.
Easy comparison, while Cross makes his way to the ground Ray is qualified to carry his boots and clean them after the match

Who's suggesting they were happy with him being last in the chain?
The fact that he played within his limitations ensured that was rarely the case.
I would also think that continually bringing up the deficiencies of an already retired player is pretty disrespectful but what would I know.

I like Ray more than most - thought he was unfairly the whipping boy when he was with us, but he doesn't offer us anything others on our list already don't.
He'd be useful for a team that needs a HBF with experience to set up the zone or a mature outside runner but with Boyd, Murphy, Wood & Morris in our back 6 he's not required and elsewhere we have Stevens & Libba coming back into a side that will have McLean and Webb with another pre-season under their belt pushing for spots.

The issue was he was such a high pick. 200 game career is a great effort for anyone but throw in pick 4, 2 clubs, inconsistent, role player and from what we gave we rightly wanted more.

To be fair, if you had a guaranteed 200 game player from a pick 4 you'd probably be taking it without asking too many questions. That says that the player is at the least a consistent performer. In a sense, above the strike average for a pick 4.

The problem is that Ray is an anomalous 200 gamer. He was always cusp. Always nearing the edge. Never considered in the top 15 on a list. I honestly think he is the worst 200 game player to have played in the modern era (in that sense, kudos to him for making it, in particular in a side that competed in GFs). Given that context, you can say pick 4 was a stretch. But still, as pick 4s go, not a disaster (**** it could have been worse!).

Gee sorry immortal , hadn't realised it's such a sensitive issue. Your logic suggest we now can't talk about definieces of any players now retired , otherwise it's disrespectful.
But as you say , what would I know ?

It's an opinion take it or leave it. Just don't set up a straw man. I said to continually bring up their deficiencies is pretty disrespectful. Maybe add a bit of balance.
