I know this is the LM thread, but let's not all judge what we need just yet. We have a young group that will continue to improve, we have selected some bigger bodies in the draft to help complement those already on the list. Let's pause the discussion until it becomes clearer what we do actually need.

Having said that, I think a ruckman is probably going to be needed.....
Great post also.

Watching 2mpete today makes me sad :(

I thought he might come to us given he was quite keen to be drafted by us. Kudos to GCS for getting him to extend. The worm may have turned up there...

Interesting discussion the last few pages. Not surprising that a fan forum is against trading any player unless his name is Tutt or Jones (and even then for a surprising amount of folks that is only with hindsight).

For the record I don't advocate actively shopping Dahlhaus. I do however consider him to be the most expendable of our top ten players as he is one of the poorest finishers in the league. Playing him fwd of centre is roulette. As no one least of all Dahl wants him to be kicking for goal. And for me Dahl's strongpoints don't outweigh just how bad his kicking for goal is.

Dahl is going to cost us IMO.

If we got a great offer I'd pull the trigger. And while I understand the reasons why many wouldn't I don't happen to agree.

Your own opinion and what not but honestly to say his strong points dont outweigh his kicking for goal is just utterly ridiculous. Hes an inside midfielder who averaged 26 odd disposals and kicked 17 goals. That is a great return. Could his kicking for goal hurt us in a big game? Yeah maybe but Id bet if he wasnt in the team we wouldnt even be in the running in that big game.

I love how skewed perception is sometimes. "One of the worst finishers in the league" because he's been known to miss the occasional sitter.
He's had a couple of good years in front of goal and a couple of bad ones. No real trend to suggest he's anything other than average in front of goal.

He kicks well every second year - so now he's due for a bad year

2011: 11.7
2012: 13.18
2013: 28.18
2014: 17.23
2015: 17.10

Total: 86.76 - not great but typical for a midfielder

Yeah it's getting pretty ridiculous. He's missed a few but he's also kicked plenty. Worst in the league is hyperbolic at best.

With Mason Cox coming on in leaps and bounds, Collingwood seem to be developing a ruck depth they are unlikely to retain. Can't fit Cox, Grundy and Witts all into the same team with Moore so one surely gets squeezed out at the end of the year. I really hope we are in Witts ear as its more likely he would be up for a trade if he doesn't play 1st ruck consistently through '16.

Seems to me that the less time Dahl has to think about his shot on goal the more likely he is to convert
Spot on. He's an excellent opportunistic forward, when he throws it on his boot 40m out on a bizarre angle over his shoulder it manages to go in but running in 20 meters out in an acre and he sprays it. Stop thinking Dahl

yeah but - theres more to playing forward of center than kicking goals from set shots. Hes brilliant at crumbing and snapping and I believe he is very good at being involved in score chains and assists.

For whatever deficiencies he does have, hes an extremely *effective* player both offensively and defensively, so if hes our 10th best player, we are doing very, very nicely indeed.

You'd be trading out one of our top 10 who bleeds red, white and blue, is hugely popular and possibly our best defensive forward/midfielder. In terms of culture ... he can't be traded IMO. Our young group seems pretty tight and we should be aiming to keep it that way, not drive a wedge between them!

Totally agree, Dahl is still young and hopefully he can continually work on his skills. The only thing holding him back from entering the Bontstringesphere is his foot skills. He is elite in every other category.

But BB is spot on. You do not consider trading Dahl unless he wants to leave. That is just taking us back to the 70s culture. Success comes from loyalty and sacrifice, not trading players who are willing to bleed for the club

Grundy is overrated (is going to be a solid player but not brilliant like a lot of people suggest) but isn't going anywhere, Witts is a spud, and Cox is actually being trained more as a key forward than a ruck and in any case isn't going anywhere because he wants to stick with the Pies because they gave him his chance.

Witts would be the only one attainable but I'd much rather Campbell ahead of him and I don't even rate Campbell that highly.

Interesting. Why do you think Witts is a spud? I really rate him. He doesn't deliver enough in general play I would concede but I think part of that is his relative youth. He's 209cm and uses his height well. Like the 200cm new breed of forwards I see the entire league going for that height advantage which is where I think Campbell will continue to struggle. Doesn't have the leap of a nicnat, doesn't have the height advantage of a cox or Witts. Still only 23 years old and has slowly improved every year in my opinion. Would happily give any pick past about 8 or 9 for Witts in any average draft.

I reckon Witts ends up a significantly better player than Campbell. Too often written off in the young ruck stocks for mine.

Most teams - including us are looking for goal kicking mids and mids with breakout speed and agility to get out of contests. Dahl moved to midfield - gets over 20+possies - kicks close to a goal a game - can't believe we would even consider trading him. And a great marketing success with the kids. NOPE.

I understand the give something to get something but Dahl is borderline elite - you just focus on keeping them and recruit around them. If we have an oversupply of this quality then fine but would prefer we trade away a couple of other goods rather than a top10 player. For Colliwobbles - they have Grundy, Witts, Gault and Cox as genuine rucks (We have Minson, TC, Roughead and Goetz). Witts or Gault would be good but neither are the standard of Dahl. So need another options
