I think a first and a second or first and a player

I think a first and a second or first and a player
A - I hope he comes
B - Be rapt if youse blokes are right
C - Hurley being younger and an AA is worth more than Ryder IMO who fetched you're suggested price. I'd be comfortable paying more.

If we keep Campbell and Roughy, then Clarke is a good choice for the 3rd ruck role/worst case ruck. Would we be playing a player like him now?
"Please move halfway across the country to play predominantly VFL football in Melbourne winter but we'll play you if injury strikes"
- Not the easiest sell. At Freo he has Jon Griffin and an increasingly brittle Sandi as his only competition.

Agree. 3 for 1 deals are very rarely worth it. It's a lot to give up unless the player or pick is essentially useless in which case the receiving team probably doesn't give a dam anyway
3 for 1 deals often include a 3rd or 4th round swap, that doesn't really apply here.

So what do you think? First and second?
First and a player or first and a second would be my guess. I'd be surprised if we paid more.

Good point. Offer him an extra 100k than he's getting now a year and make it a two year contract, instead of the one he was getting from Freo and I think that's enough incentive. We really can't afford to go into next season with Cambell and Roughy as our only dedicated ruckman with their injury history.

A first, second and a player is overs for Hurley. We won't need to pay that much.
Tend to agree if he clearly nominates us.

1st and a 2nd, or 1st and a player (rated around a second) should be plenty enough and is on par with Danger's deal. Especially fair with the potential breach of contract/duty of care hanging over them too!

But then remind him our rucks are Roughy and Campbell and slip him their injury history ;)

An extra $100k for Griffin?
Hell no.
Either use it as part of the package to attract Hurley or find a state leaguer to rookie.

Weirdly, Roughy is one of a handful of players that has played every game for us.
If you told me that before the season started I wouldn't have believed it.

Hey mate...from the info you have shared in here i pretty much would believe you if you said the moon was pink haha.

Can you promise me Hurley is coming? I dont want to have my heart broken:(
There's absolutely no guarantee he is coming. All that's been said is we're up to our eyeballs in getting him to come here, but still a lot to be played out yet. General consensus is it's us or he stays at Essendon and it's pretty much 50-50 at this stage

And Crammers in his ear would certainly help some.

If Minson is off at the end of the year, that gives us quite a few $. Don't reckon a state leaguer could come in and do the same job. Really don't want Boyd to ruck as much as he is having to do now. Nicholls is looking like the go though.

I'm not one that subscribes to the notion that one very good season and a subsequent All Australian selection increases your value to the point of being significant to list managers. They will judge players on their merit and that alone.

Nick Smith had one great year and an All Australian selection.

Whilst I think that Hurley is a better player and a more key position role than that, I don't see him as a perpetual All Australian centre half back from here on out. I think he had one great year and will be a very good add to a contending team.

A first, a second and a player is overs. In my opinion the deal should be a fringe player and a first round pick. Outside clubs are in the box seat in any case if he wants to go.

Can't promise - no one knows, but I can tell you the club is really confident.

Fair enough. Looks like I'm in the minority. Hope I'm wrong

And perhaps my valuation is coloured by the fact the players I'm putting up aren't worth much (another minority opinion) :)

I'm with you in the way that I would much rather trade established players that we've had a 40-60 game look at, than trading a multitude of picks.

I hate trading draft picks in the AFL if it can be avoided because second round picks have a habit of coming back and biting you in the ass and first round picks have the same habit, with even more frequency.

You also run the risk of becoming a norf and sacrificing your future or even your present by continually trading away picks for established guys, and then falling off a mighty cliff when those dudes run out of gas and have taken spots off younger players.

Whilst I think hurley is more in the Hawthorn mould of trade than a norf style acquisition, we need to be careful giving away picks like candy.
