Burgoyne was cooked when he signed for Hawthorn, too. Was a huge risk taking him on. Very interested in Deledio.
WHE sucks. Seductive blend of attributes but don't think he'll ever live up to them. Let Bailey Dale simmer away, and look elsewhere for a prospect.
You're just repeating what I said earlier in the week!
Grade talent that could be the difference between us winning a flag or not.
I see a lot of similarities to any premiership contending team adding Deledio to how Hawthorn recruited Shaun Burgoyne, their individual successes aside.
Both are mid/defenders, both had injury interrupted years in the final year before being traded (Burgoyne only played 9 games in his final Port year)
Both are risky investments - massive overs if their career ends prematurely because of injury, but both massively on the cheap if they had 5 years out of their careers.
Hawthorn paid pick 9 and Mark Williams (who still had a bit of value at the time even if he was a nutter) for Burgoyne, which at the time seemed massive overs - Burgyone was already 27 when he got traded, missed the first 7 games of 2010 because of injury, and there were question marks about the value of 12-15 years of a pick 9 vs maybe 3-4 injury prone years out of someone like Burgoyne, but nearly 7 years on, the rest is history, Burgoyne was worth every cent of the trade.
Hawthorn were also quite a young team in 2009, whilst they had some success already, they realised that they already had the A-Grade talent in their list through the draft so they had to take a risk and turbo-charge their list profile to be older through trading.
The fact that Deledio is a couple of years older means that he won't get paid quite as much (ie not pick 9) but I would trade our first pick in the and a decent (say someone like Stevens) player for him in a heartbeat, we have to take the risk that he's over his injuries and can contribute 3-4 years of A-grade talent a bit like Burgoyne at the time.
If we miss out on Hurley, the player that I'd be looking at is Deledio.[/QUOTE]
One part where the comparison falls away is the difference in ages.
If Burgoyne wasn't cooked, he was still "only" in his late 20's ie had 5+ years left of good footy. Even if we get a fit Deledio for the rest of his career - it could "only" be as little as 3-4 years because of the fact he's already 30 next year. We might get more utility out of a draft pick or alternate trade even if Deledio's ticked all boxes from a "he's not really that cooked" perspective.
