After watching the Boston Bruins decimate a champion team first hand with one ridiculous trade after another I'll say this: Sometimes the best move to make at the deadline is no move at all.

Focusing your energy on how to fit your current guns under the salary cap and drafting well is just as viable as trading in free agents. Otherwise you can risk losing your originally drafted talent for the sake of paying a few mercenaries who dont really give a shit about your team anyway.

Anyone remember that time we won the Premiership from 7th?
I still remember leading the Cats late in the 4th of the 76 elimination final, and losing by 5 points.

And 7 losing prelims. And the 85 qual final massacre.

But the memory of the flag is changing the angst of those earlier memories to almost steps on the path to enlightenment!

So Pickett to Carlton hey? So, Marchbank, Stewart, Pickett and one more for Blues first two picks?

Christ they're predictable.
"Hey, let's go after a large number of GWS players who aren't good enough to be in their 22". Bringing that many in is pretty counter-intuitive to actually beating GWS who would be a direct rival in the time they'd like to contend :drunk:

Rubbish mate

We won so now we just give up?

Hawks are trying to improve as are cats.

I'm greedy now I want more not settle for what we just won let's push while we are hot
Sorry MD Hawks and Cats are desperate to remain relevant as the last remnants of their drafted premier teams retire or are coming to the end of their careers.
Other than Dangerfield Geelong look very ordinary and will have to give up a fair bit witj their moves last year.
The Cats and tbe Hawks at best are replacing retiring talent with something close but are not improving thier teams from those that failed this season.
We have a premiership list with enormous upside in development alone. Cloke covers our one weakness in the short term and allows Boyd 2 more years of forward development.
The only team looking loke they could substantially improve during this trade period are the Crows.
There are no players currently mentioned that would substantially improve our developing team so just bring in the best young players available and continue the development and the era will last substantially longer

Does anyone else think if Carlton turn Gibbs into Pickett, Marchbank and Stewart it's a massive lose? I know Gibbs cops a fair bit of shit but I reckon he's a gun.

Not in the Pendles, Fyfe, Kennedy, Bontempelli, Sloane class, but I have him in that second run with blokes like Lewis, Ward and Shuey.

And at the same time making it harder for the rest of us by allowing them to cut their list like they need to and bring in low draft picks in the process. They should be shedding these players out of necessity and getting unders back. Cheers Carlton.

I'm breaking out the popcorn, watching other clubs acting like children who are simply unable to delay their own gratification. Some of the trade scenarios are mind-boggling. What the hell is Collingwood doing, for instance? And Geelong? Seriously, what the...? And St Kilda continues to chase just about everyone who becomes available. I am very comfortable with the Bulldogs' strategy. It's intelligent, calculating and thoroughly professional. I have every confidence that the crack team, both on and off the field, who delivered us the 2016 premiership know exactly how to build a fantastic list in the right way. And not like some other teams, who are really throwing a little white ball into the roulette wheel - or worse, scrambling madly for the life raft. Flapping about in the waters of trade week creates a lot of foam. Isn't it nice that we can watch the developing frenzy from a banana lounge on the beach!

No way Gibbs is as good as Ward or Lewis. I think he's a total squib. Gets the ball a lot but he's just a goodish 22 player in my opinion. It's just the fact he went pick 1 that makes him a standout. Scully and Watts did as well and are better "equivalents" IMHO.....

This is bang on. Two older sides desperate for one more rodeo. Little do they know there's a new sheriff in town.

Yeah I agree. Although marchbank and Stewart would be good gets for them. They need a good forward who can chop out in the ruck

Strongly disagree. I think we'll see how good he is in a decent side. Big coup for the Crows I think.

Crazy times indeed. Since when did clubs actively pursue players they simply don't have the currency to get? How can the Hawks adequately compensate Sydney and Gold Coast? Fremantle want Kersten, McCarthy, Hamling and Hill. And Geelong. Deledio, seriously how?
Maybe it's irresponsible or maybe it's a new level of ambition and ruthlessness we haven't seen before. Maybe these clubs are willing to do anything they can to snag another premiership before the Bulldogs (and maybe GWS) era of domination sets in.
A few years ago we lampooned crazy vossy and now everyone is doing it.
