The Boyd trade is just one aspect of the example set by just one premiership team- it's hardly the measured recipe for success.

If clubs are as predictably reactionary as they usually are, they'll blindly follow our lead in this regard. If they are smart, they'll notice that premiership teams tend to have two things: a good group of players and a good coach; then they'll do everything they can to acquire those things through various routes.

We've built a premiership team primarily through canny drafting, with one monster trade and a couple of discards from other teams. Others, like Sydney and Hawthorn, have built premiership teams with a heavier trading focus. It's not about which route you take, but which players you choose along your route.
Of course. It's not just about a marquee signing. The premiership we just won was 98% a result of good drafting and nailing later picks. Also the cheap trades like Shane Biggs was another crucial reason.

But if you have that in order which someone like Essendon is working towards, then if you need a certain player in a certain position then you make sure it gets done. Just like we did with the boyd deal.

And obviously if you can, then hire Luke Beveridge as your senior coach. That helps too:p

Am I the only one who thinks tht GWS' depth is hugely overrated? Wasn't Sam Reid an emergency for the prelim?
Their depth is one of the biggest myths in footy, Sam Reid was to be delisted but was sent to GWS as Ward's travel pony yet 5 years on still played half a season for them. If they get injuries particularly in backline next year they will struggle.

Not only the media but even our own supporters underestimate the quality of our list.

There is still the feeling that we arsed this premiership by luck and timing.

But aside from GWS there is no current list with our depth.

If we come out hungry next season - watch out

Morris
T Boyd
Wood
M Boyd
R Murphy

They go back to normal salary cap next year. Concerning for them cause they would have a stack of players over 500k per season.

Cameron, Ward, Griffen, Shiel, Davis at a minimum.

Shaw, Mumford, Scully, Cognilio, Lobb? A couple more other candidates as well would not to be earning close to that figure.

Shiel is out of contract next season. Watch Carlton, North Melbourne launch a massive bid for him.
Griffen - How long does his contract go for and how much is he being paid?

Pretty funny if that contract makes GWS lose good players from this season on.

He had a four year deal. So he's 2 years in.

It was a big deal. He didn't move there for loose change. I think it was close to a million a season.

Keep in mind though we payed a decent chunk of it. And if GWS had any sense whatsoever they should have front ended it.

He'd still be on 500k a season if not more currently though.

re future draft pick trading:

"Those rules introduced last season state that clubs must make at least two first-round selections in each four-year period or face restrictions from trading any further first-round draft picks and that clubs can trade one year in the future only." (http://www.afl.com.au/news/2016-08-12/the-futurepick-puzzle)

That's actually much less restrictive than most people on here have previously thought, myself included... Collingwood and Geelong for instance can keep trading their future firsts this year, and the worst that happens is that they get locked out of trading future firsts in upcoming years.

I agree. Our list has continually been portrayed as battlers that worked well together. Bont and Strings the only ones people recognise as true guns.

That's surprising. It doesn't really say how long the restrictions would last, which could be a concern. It would also be a nuisance to not be able to move your first round pick up/down the order depending on who you rate if you were restricted.

also which late pick do you think is the most fair for cloke? pick 61, 73 or 74?
Hopefully 73/74. But if we trade out Hrovat, Stevens and probably Hamling for 2nd/3rd round picks, and considering we will probably only make 3 selections in the draft, we could probably afford to give up 61 as we may not even be able to use it in the draft. It will sweeten the deal and establish a good trading relationship with Collingwood.
