Draft picks are no panacea. Stringer was taken at pick five and is an All Australian and premiership player. Despite this we'd be unlikely to get pick 5 for him and even if we did odds are they wouldn't deliver what he has. Even if they do it will take 4-5 years. Every year people get sucked into the idea of just trading a player out. There's no point if they're best 22 and you aren't getting something significant back.

I wouldn't trade anyone out unless it will result in a very specific need being filled. Even then I would look at free agency to fill gaps or plunder the VFL/WAFL.

I don't think we need to dramatically overhaul the list. Boyd and Murphy will almost certainly retire. We can delist a few lesser lights. Other than that we still have an admirable group of <25s who won a flag a year ago and have still won half their games this year despite being generally in crap form. The core of Bont, Stringer, Macrae, Boyd, Hunter, Libba, Wallis, Dahl, Daniel and JJ* will be around to deliver for a number of years.

We are in a difficult position with regard to list management.

We know what the holes in our list are, but we've won with them before. At the moment however, our biggest strength is in fact our biggest weakness. Do you bolster other areas and hope our midfield rediscovers its form, or inject fresh talent into the current "problem" area and hope those other holes can be filled organically or papered over structurally?

At any rate, the answer is not selling low on players that have demonstrated good football as recently as last year.

I keep seeing people say we need a classy mid... but who? Besides Kelly, Martin and Ablett (all on gigantic $$$$) there's none openly available. The only one I've heard is potentially for the taking is Robbie Gray, and he's more of a forward.

We're gonna have to get that player from the draft IMO.

So does pittard have good disposal?
His ball use is pretty good, but a lot still rate him based on the brain fades of years past.

He can still make some mistakes that look pretty bloody ordinary, but I don't really see his ball use as much of an issue anymore. Better footballer than he gets credit for imo.

He reminds me a hell of a lot like Suckling but faster, mostly good disposal but when its bad its really bad and he is pretty ordinary defender. Given what Suckling cops even when he plays decent this board would go nuts with them both playing. He is ok, but think his price tag is going to outweigh his actual worth.

Yeah, I tend to agree, but if JJ goes I think our options are limited. Not sure we can get by without bringing in a genuine, AFL standard half back in the event he leaves, and Pittard could be the best option.

McStay is not a big fish. I'm not even convinced he becomes a good player, very overrated.
Its a bigger fish than what weve got in recent times. Genuine upgrade on Roberts and a good replacement for Morris I reckon. Was going to say Lever but I am almost certain he will stay.

We need to get a lot of younger players playing

JJ possibly going
Moyd and Murphy to retire
Morris possible retire

That's a few from the backline going by the end of the season

JJ going doesn't bother me at all now. But, we have to cash in and screw the hell out of a deal. Can't get bent over as we can do in trades.

I genuinely don't even think he is an upgrade on Roberts. More potential and better attributes sure, but currently not on output.

One has had an experienced core of Wood, Morris, Boyd and Murphy to help him.

The other has had a pack of spuds to help in the defensive line.

Seriously Mcstay is a significantly better player/or at least will be than Roberts.

Far quicker and can play forward.

They would be playing on different types of forwards anyway so I'm not sure why the comparison was made. Also McStay is extremely poor as a forward, he cannot find the ball at all hence the reason he hasn't played there since 2015.

Not saying let's trade him but interested in people's thoughts on lachie hunter.

He is clearly an outside midfielder, doesn't get many contested possessions, doesn't lay many tackles and isn't exactly a good defensive player. Yet as a clear outside mid he isn't a great kick of the ball and doesn't gain much ground as he takes the safe options and sideways options a lot.

Are we using him in the wrong position? Would he have any value in a trade? Should we be looking to get an upgrade on him?

Most outside mids are not very defensive minded but they are generally better ball users than hunter has been

We're still a young team. The following players are 25 or under.

Bontempelli
Macrae
Dahlhaus
Liberatore
Stringer
JJ
Hunter
Wallis
Cordy
Smith
McLean
Boyd
Dunkley
Biggs
Adams
Daniel
Jong

Then there's blokes like Dale, R.Smith, Williams and last years draftee's.

We don't need to "play kids"... we already are. They're just our best players already. It's literally Wood, Picken, Suckling in the middle gap and Bob, Moz, Boyd in the old camp.

Hunter is probably our second best defensive running mid after Macrae. Just because he's not laying tackles doesn't mean he isn't defensive. As soon as there's a turn over he's sprinting back to help out Wood and co.

Do you watch the games on TV or at the ground? Because it's hard to pick up on stuff like that on TV.

He's been playing half back the last month or so which I don't get.

I don't agree that he's an extremely poor forward, kicked above a goal a game in his second season (21 goals from 20 games) in a terrible team. And he was moved to the backline to accomodate some other up and coming forwards (which the lions have plenty of) and to replace Merrett.

Live interstate so only have the ability to get to a handful of games each year.

Was going off what I see on tv, tackle stats, one perceters and pressure act figures.

you may have inadvertently made the case for Ablett there. He's the one that may not cost gigantic $ if he really wants back to Vic.

Will probably be a controversial opinion;

But if we lose JJ, I reckon we go after Sam Reid (Sydney) - as long as we don't pay overs for him. His a FA at end of season correct?

Seen three Sydney games live this season including ours vs them, and his leading/marking to the ball is something we desperately need deep Inside 50. Also versatile which Bevo would like.

Kicked 19.6 as well, so rather accurate.

Very injury prone, let Collingwood or Richmond overpay for him.
