Just to give people an idea of what we got for Hamling, over the last 10 years picks 35 & 36 have netted:

Picks 35:
2015 - Marcus Adams
2014 - Harrison Wigg
2013 - Toby Nankevis
2012 - Tom Temay
2011 - Daniel Markworth
2010 - Ben Newton
2009 - David Astbury
2008 - Jamie Bennell
2007 - Sam Reid (Bulldog version)
2006 - Mark Austin

Picks 36:
2015 - Tom Cole
2014 - Ed Vickers-Willis
2013 - Jarred Janson
2012 - Tanner Smith
2011 - Rory Taggert
2010 - Aaron Young
2009 - Joel Houghton
2008 - Ashley Smith
2007 - Steven Browne
2006 - Alwyn Davey
Not bad. A number of good players there, including (and I quote) "Marcus Adams... (long pause)... (a longer pause)... (more silence)."

I don't think Carlton do it. I think that pick is linked to some GWS spud in some capacity.

I feel Hrovat to North Melbourne is more realistic. Let's remember that they have had 4 player walk out the door with no currency. If I'm them I'm looking at a 2 for 1 deal with Hrovat.

If I'm North I'm splitting that first rounder that they own like we did for Dunks and Collins.
Also they could do exactly what we did last year, with Brisbane. 11 for 21 + 22.

I wonder if we have any aces up our sleeve for the final mad rush on Thursday. We're always interesting, so something is bound to happen.

We are going to lose Marcus next year anyway.

Anybody hold out any slither of hope we retain him. I mean we just one a premiership (which unfortunately he couldn't be a part of), it's not as if Marcus is getting a better financial offer (he'd be on 2nd year wages next year anyway). Yet he still wants a trade.

Obviously for family reasons. We aren't going to change his mind in 12 month irrespective of what happens till then.

TBH I think Nankervis is ahead of development, and Markworth was talented but ruined by injury.

In Dal we trust though, if we nabbed Ben Long at 35 I certainly wouldn't complain.

Was just talking to my uncle he had a feeling that he wouldn't put it pass us to bid on either of the pies F/S picks like we did with Dunkley.

Could this happen ? What pick range would they be at ?
second round and beyond
Although Brown is a very nice player...so maybe even our first pick. Hm

But only one was chosen by Dalrymple...the best one...Marcus Adams. :D

Pick 35 for most teams = crap shoot
Pick 35 for Dalrymple = :rainbow:

I get the feeling that the fact we have a good defensive system means that the players who are in the system get overrated when they get taken out of that system. If that makes sense.

Hamling played well in a defence where he was alongside the experienced Boyd and Murphy and very good role players in Biggs etc.

Hamling might have been behind a few good KPD's at Geelong, but he was still unable to get a game one way or another at three years there.

Also remember he had some average VFL form in that when we picked him back in the team due to injuries, it was actually as a forward, not a defender again.

There's every chance that he could be a fringe player who can't get a game at Freo, and they justg parted with a good pick for him.

Base case:
Hrovat for a future third (North/Carlton both pretty desirable - throw in 73/74 if wanted)
Stevens + 43 for 36.
Cloke for 61 (throw in 73/74 if Collingwood want them)

Optimistic:
Stevens + 35 +73 for 23
Hrovat + 43 +74 for 25
Cloke for 61
that is optimistic but it'd be a good draft to get those early to mid second rounders
especially with the academy players likely occupying most of GWSs picks and maybe eben Gold Coasts, not to mention the teams that don't have many picks going into the draft..

Imagine that. Our genius with 18, 23 and 25. He could turn that into pure gold.

To put another perspective to that

From picks 35 - 55 the last 8 drafts have yielded some gun or decent mids and other good players.

08 Sloane, Motlop, Walters
09 Christensen, Stratton
10 Parker, Fasolo
11 Newnes and Neale
12 Mason Wood and Membrey
13 Barass, Allir, Ben Brown, Fantazia (that fuller selection hurts bad)
14 Caleb Daniel
15 Bailey Williams.

Don't discount the importance of nailing a great selection In this region.
This is a much more realistic way to look at it. There is always value down the draft order (and many future stars who don't even get picked on draft day, as Luke Dahlhaus and others can testify).

So the correct way to look at it is "these were the players who were still available after pick 34 ..."

It just needs someone with enough scouts and smarts to find those gems.
