Lucky they did, would have missed out on Smith if we had traded down with GWS

I'm outraged that you would think that any of us would be outraged at the outrageous selection of a skinny kid from Daylesford.
I'm also outraged that you could even consider we would be outraged in 1988, because nobody got outraged in 1988. That is an outrageous suggestion. Outrage just wasn't a thing back then. Outrageous post by you

His Nickname will be Latex - get it right.

If our players can't come up with that, then I will be outraged

Same, Roarke has become such a vital part of our team I'm not sure what we would hace done to survive.

I believe we had the opportunity to trade back and take Caldwell, and another pick in the teens, but we passed.

Well for the opportunity to be there, both clubs would have to be up for it. I think it was the Giants who lost interest, and cooled, not us. They would have been pretty confident Caldwell would get to them, and didn't feel the need to give up another first round pick just to move up two places. Once Gold Coast passed on him and picked King, and we were obviously keen on Smith and the mail was strong on the Crows being into Jones. Why move up for nothing? Caldwell was theirs just by sitting put.

We were all in on Smith.
With his hammies I'm not sure Caldwell would be a good fit for us.

We need Quality. Smith was the best option for us after pick 3.
    Glad we didn't trade.

Caldwell could have taken up the positions left on the injury list of Big Red and Adams. Hopefully medical staff will be left scratching their asses all year.

I was the same, I know we shouldn’t get carried away by a highlights package but let’s do it anyway.

Smith was always our guy. He’s a potential A grader for the next decade and likely a top 3 pick if he didn’t have sore tendons.

Glad we banked and cashed in on him. Here’s hoping he fulfils projections.

Seems like GWS had Caldwell ranked above smith. Wonder why that is?

They have retention issues and he made it clear he'd much prefer to be in Melb. Would be my guess

If we had more Vic teams in front of us in the draft order we miss out on Smith.

Adelaide and PA obsession with drafting Adelaide based players saved us.

What’s gonna happen if the next three West’s are just as good! Imagine having four West’s on our list

What happens is that we ******* clean up in the draft by getting good players for cheap, and trade out our good picks to fit our needs. Might as well abuse a broken system while we can :D

We should write a song. It could go something like “sons of the West, red white and blue”. Etc etc.

    catchy I reckon!
