Branden Ellis anyone? No one has spoken about him, he is quick and much younger than Isaac Smith! Bit soft but would fit our game plan. Tonight pre-game, Caracella was asked about if Ellis will be at the Tigers next year, and said he didn’t know

I totally mean this - I’d MUCH prefer to get Caracella in over Ellis.

If he’s not a KPP what’s the point. We have lots of players just like him.

Are you sure? He regularly gets some good stats (unlike in his senior games). However I haven't been able to watch much VFL and even then it's only on TV, so maybe they are just junk stats? You know, little chip kicks back and forward etc.
Roberts goes really well in the VFL,just maybe struggles with the next grade up. I'd go as far to say he's one of our best VFL player pretty regularly.

The problem with giving Cordy a pass for playing “above his weight” is that it ignores:

(a) 3rd KPDs basically don’t exist any more;
(b) he’s nowhere near skilful, athletic or attacking enough to play any position other than KPD or as an intercept defender; and
(c) he’s never demonstrated an ability to actually play as an intercept defender.

He was a serviceable second KPD in 2017-18 where he had solid half backs, Morris, and intercept players like Adams & Wood around him. Now that a number of those players either haven’t played, have declined or are gone and the buck stops with him he’s been found out as a KPD.

I liked what he did in 2017, but he’s regressed as his responsibility has grown. Really at the cross-roads now.
Cross-roads?

At Zaine's age, Dale Morris was yet to debut. A little perspective.

At Zaine's age, Dale Morris was yet to debut. A little perspective.

Perspective might also come in the form of Kieran Collins, who is already out of the league despite being a year younger.

At the same age, Dale Morris was already a far superior athlete and one on one defender. And Cordy’s had 3 more AFL pre-seasons than Morris had by this age. Compare the two after 4 pre-seasons: not even close. Invoking Morris just highlights how far off it Cordy is in some pretty critical aspects for a KPD.

What about:

Crozier Keith Cordy(Morris)

JJ McStay Wood

Daniel in the rotation

Both McStay and Keith are out of contract - very good players but gettable as we give them future defining contracts.

Morris replaces Cordy until he can’t anymore

Lachie Young replaces Wood when he retires with Buku Khamis in the mix as the mid intercept

Young to play mostly for injuries as he develops and plays more games until 24 when he replaces Keith (now 27) this would be the normal trajectory

Trengrove provides utility (in front of Young at this stage) but also would replace a forward or ruck if needed - would play most games given an injury or form need for someone in the spine - can literally play any position.

What I don’t like above that I hope Williams could be is a Matty Boyd like hard nut. McStay is mean - Cordy is aggressive but maybe I am an old fart but like to see some nasty in the backline.

I'd keep Robert's on the minimum as a body if injuries completely decimated us. I dont think hes really that bad a player and he would be good for the twos to have an experienced player to teach our defensive game plan too.

McStay re-signed for 3 years this week.

I doubt Roberts would stay unless he gets no offers from elsewhere.

yeah not many players willing to be on minimum chips and know their place is just as a back up. But teams need some of those players. Roberts seems content in that role to me

The other alternative could be he doesn’t get an offer elsewhere and ends up working a 9-5. If he gets an offer to stay on as back up for $175k he’ll jump at it.

Current key position players

Kpd
Cordy
Trengove
Lew young
Morris
Roberts

We almost 100% let Roberts go at the end of the season, Trengove has been serviceable with good games and bad games but still think he is better as a ruck. Cordy has shown an inability to play on the bigger kpfs needs to be playing on the second or third tall. Moz we all love but hasn’t got long left. Lew young could be a solid kpd is still only 20.

Based on our kpds we lack quality if we are all honest, we need 1-2 that are upgrades on what we have.

Hartley, keath should both be looked at, I’d also look at Henderson. I honestly believe all three are upgrades on Roberts, are ahead of young and have more ability to play on the number one kpf than cordy.

Rucks
English
Sweet

Our rucks are both young but both very promising in their own ways, English has shown massive potential with strength then only thing letting him down atm meaning he doesn’t get enough hit outs and hit out to advantage. Sweet is getting plenty of hit outs in the vfl but needs to get more ball and influence the play around the ground.

Don’t think we need to add a ruck as Trengove can play there if required, lew young has played there in the vfl. So plenty of options. Although we do lack a forward/ruck

Kpfs
Naughton
Schache

We have zero depth in kpfs, the retirement of boyd has left an already depleted list further depleted. Naughton has to stay forward and whilst he’s had an up and down season his best has been brilliant, schache has shown solid signs and improvement across the year.

Need to add at worst depth here, preferably guys with scope to improve and that come cheap. Also need a ruck/forward type.

Sproule - gws - has been consistent in the neafl and is only on the rookie list. Has kicked 54 goals since 2018 from 27 games. 18 goals 5 this year from 9 games.

Dixon - freo - has been inconsistent in the wafl, played ruck last week in the wafl. Showed plenty of signs at under 18 level. 2 years in the system and behind 5 guys at freo who would walk into our team (lobb, Hogan, Taberner, McCarthy, Cox)

Both would be cheap in trade terms and both would give us extra options forward both also have 2-3 years in an Afl system meaning the likelihood of them being able to contribute straightway is above that of freshly drafted talls (yes Naughton is an exception who impacted immediately)

We need to add key position players at both ends and increase our depth and our quality there. Thinking everyone who can’t get a game at another club is a dud whilst talking up the players at our club that are either not getting a game or are getting monstered each week is ridiculous
