Geez the Adams situation annoys me. He's not even going home. Whats wrong at the club? This is a bloke who we gave a chance, he's barely got on the park and we've been patient, now he's pissing off.

Hawks to Wingard: "We want you, but just hang in there while we look at all our better options first. Then if we sign one and a couple of others fall through, there might be a few scraps left over for you afterwards".

Wingard: "Sounds great, I've never felt more wanted. Should I call you or will you call me?

Hawks: "We'll call you Chad"

Wingard: "OK OK, I'll be waiting by the phone. (whispers) I love you".

We are screaming out for mature players yet aren't able to pry one loose apart from an average FA and Sam Lloyd. I'm sure people will prove me wrong but I feel that this period would be pivotal in our list build.
Last trade period we picked up Schache at the death knell and on 2018 form that appears to be an astute pick up. We've still got a fair way to go.

Interesting that GWS is clearing space. Wonder what big fish they may be after for 2019. Any guns coming out of contract? Any with good mates at GWS?
Has any of our elite players had a fall out with Bevo?

Would they consider moving interstate?

I am sure the answer is no but I hope all our elite players are locked up before the start of the season. If not I will become worried.

This will apply for other clubs also not just ours

From a Hawks source:
Dogs based their contract offer on Chad performing at a sustained high level. Significant money tied up in bonuses for performance.
Hawks contract was all about getting Chad without any clauses. Let Chad be Chad. Lower overall contract but was same as Dogs base without bonuses.

My take:
Chad was wooed by Clarko & Burgoyne AND by an experienced list manager.
Supports the idea he doesn't want to try too hard.

So if I get my head around this right....

We have pick 27 worth 703 points. If West got bid on at, say 20, worth 912, minus the 20% discount, that would be 730 points. So we'd lose pick 27, and one of our later picks would get dragged back 30 points? So our pick 45 would get dragged back to 46?

It is complicated and needs to be looked at over 2 seasons, but we are allowed to go into points deficit, so if we for example traded down the possible Adams and Dahls pick to say pick 15 or we trade out the Dahls pick and Adams for a mature and West is nominated at pick 16 we would utilise the next picks in the draft to accumulate the points. We are allowed to go into points deficit so we would then get or draft pick at pick 7, our earlier draft pick at say 15 or the mature body AND West.

If we don't trade the Dahl pick and just get a pick for Adams and West is nominated at 16 we will probably end up only with pick 7 and West

Suspect it has more to do with having far to many top picks that have had their market value increased. Only so many you can afford to keep and backended contracts that you can’t afford to pay. Whilst they trade out for top picks it just masks salary cap issues and new young guns will cost more after their initial 2 year starting contract

I think the degree of ‘failure’ being ascribed to Wingard chosing Hawthorn is the issue. For some of us, the ranting and raving and calling for heads over it is baffling.

In a strict sense, the club ‘failed’ to lure Wingard. Just like I ‘failed’ to resist the lure of carbs yesterday. There are degrees to ‘failure’ that are impacted by the stakes and circumstances.

A player choosing a club that won double the games we did this year and has a list more balanced for immediate success isn’t necessarily a huge failure on Sam Power’s or the club’s strategy to luring him imo. At least that’s not the first conclusion I’ve drawn.

Perhaps Wingard didn’t want to be one of only a handful of late-20s leaders at a rebuilding club? He doesn’t strike me as a roll up the sleeves and lead from the front type.

There are so many possible explanations other than the “Power failed, burn the witch!” option.

That’s not to say he ran a perfect campaign either. I have no idea. But if we’re speculating, there are a bunch of possible explanations I’d give weight to before “club’s stuffed, what a failure, Power stinks” etc.
We’re 100% in agreement on the failure stuff. In the simple essence of the word, we failed to get the player but these things are seldom simple and I disagree with people who want to smash the club and individuals before we have any knowledge of the true circumstances

Dean Kent to Saints for pick 65! Upgrade on what we have in the forward line so surprised we didn’t go there, but will put Lloyd’s price at about pick 90

Wow you’re optimistic....

Watch the hawks...they will make it happen and be in the running for another flag in 2019. We could seriously learn a thing or two.
On how to not have a salary cap?

Also would we be keen on Wingard if we had to trade Bailey Williams as that is what the family club is reported to be doing with Burton.

Had hoped that we had learnt to play our cards close to our chest. Was hoping that was the reason behind there not being much news with us. Losing hope that that is the case. When it gets to Friday and the only guys you’re linked to are Duryea, Townsend and Lloyd whilst not having a great draft hand - it’s pretty freaking depressing.

Last year we lost Stringer but we had two first round picks, a big man free agent, and a former number 2 pick we could sell hope with.

Don’t think we can sell much hope for 2019.

Maybe I'm too old school but I would hate to be a Hawks supporter.

Part of the reason I love football is seeing young kids drafted to the club watching them develop and then go on to play 100-200-300 games in the rw&b.

I will never feel the same way about Boyd or Schache as I do about Bont or Macrae and I hope to one day see their banners hanging at the top of etihad stadium with other true champions of the west.

Yes it sucks to miss out on a player we were interested in but if the side effect of that is that we draft in another kid who grows into another champion of our club that is fine by me.

I know that we have traded in and traded out players for varying reasons in the past but if we ever get to the point that talented drafted in kids are being offered for trade against their will to pull in players from other clubs, my love for this game will be forever diminished.

Did I miss an interview somewhere saying "we're going to move heaven and earth to make sure Wingard is a Bulldog in 2019"???

"We've definitely got interest in Chad, and we've signalled that to his management"

"There's no doubt we've got interest in Chad," Power said.

That's the extent of what I can find on what we've committed to getting him. Sounds exactly like we had an idea in mind of what he was worth to us and refused to pay overs. I'm a fan of that.
According to a Port mate, Chad is a sook who did not like to be told that he had more to give when facing the end of year review. Great teams in AFL are built with patience. We are on way, IMO.
