Re the foxsports article about the Doggies holding up the 4-way trade:

I'm very satisfied with the position the club has taken. Been thinking about it:

If we get Bruce for 32 + 3rd round. Ok. If we get Keath for 3rd round or 3rd round x 2, ok. Otherwise,

Happy to walk away from Bruce. 4 year contract is a bit generous imo. will be in 30's when contract concludes. It's only worth it if he comes relatively cheap pickwise.

Happy to walk away from Keath. 4 year contract too generous. 29 in 2020, 20 games, Injury requiring surgery may be related to previous career as a fast bowler. Only worth it if he comes relatively cheap in terms of picks.

More than happy to go to draft with picks 13, 32, 45 and keep going with a team that is young and building. Happy to use 51 & 53 for new blood or to promote R. Smith and Lachie Young.

Nothing mentioned, just his manager confirming the deal likely to go down tomorrow. Nothing specific on the details.

Guessing based on Freo's rejection of pick 6: Pick 12 + next year's first (B King now being unobtainable). Way overs. Saints just keep reaming themselves. Should have stopped at pick 6 and walked away.

To be fair, reckon 18 and Bruce for 13 is balanced. 32 for Keath, leaving us with pick 18 as a first rounder along with the later picks.
I’ll agree to disagree there. Think that’s very heavy in our favour. The whole pick 18 idea seems confusing to me.

If Saints give up 18 and are left with 12 and 13, how do they use them?

They don’t have a pick for Jones. Whatever they get for Steven won’t be enough. If they get anything for Newnes (doubtful) it won’t be enough. Would have to give up one of those picks and a future first for Hill. The other pick gets eaten up by Howard/Ryder. If they trade a future first for Hill, they can’t use other future picks.

So how do they get Butler and Jones, and also, then they have no picks to take to the draft?

Lethenan (however you spell it) ruled out using their future first.

I’m bloody interested in seeing how it gets done if thats the case. Bell is asking for a huge amount.

I think 6 and a future first (as some places reported) was too steep. 12 and a future first with something headed back to Saints would be fair.

Wasn't that before they found out that Ben King isn't wetting his pants to play with his bro at Stk?

Pre-seaspn draft is different to the regular draft. Usually, only a few picks taken by clubs with list spots left. No idea if it's feasible though. Someone at work mentioned it and I didn't know much about the mechanism tbh. Hoping someone could shed some light on it.

As I understand it's a version of the draft for uncontracted players. Draft order is in the reverse of the ladder like the main draft. The difference is the players set the length and amount for their contracts. Keath would be something like 4 years at $750,000 p.a. If any of the clubs that finished lower than us are willing to take that contract we miss out on Keath. Not sure if any club would be willing to pick up a player that requested to be somewhere else but there's definitely a risk. Clubs usually pass because they can pick up these players for a pick in the main draft on the 2 year draftee salary (I think) which is just easier.

Lethlean again said they'd be in touch with Ben King before his contract is up .. bellend

He probably signed on because of they pressure they keep heaping on him ... they even did it straight after he was drafted

Unpopular opinion but jeez Keath is underrated on here. I’d value him between pick 30-35. Bruce I’d value between 23-30. And that’s with Bulldog coloured glasses on.

Personally, I’d be very happy with the 4 way trade that we knocked back.

Agree, Adelaide does the best out of it, but I could go with it otherwise...
however, all in all...

I love the way we've shown some balls, because there's still 2 days to go and we can always go back to this if no-one else shifts or we can walk away, no more to pay and go to the draft with a nice hand of 13, 32, 45 + 2 other 3rd rounders.
