For the uneducated including me why didn't we upgrade Bhuku and Sweet to our list.
No information forthcoming from the club?.

We should have a lot of assets next year, and the work starts now to spend them.

In recent years, we've seen a number of clubs go hard at multiple players. And despite the cries of, "How can they possibly get all those deals done?" they almost always have. Richmond brought in Hopper and Taranto; Brisbane Dunkley, Gunston, McKenna, Ashcroft and Fletcher; Carlton Martin, Betts, Pittonet, and then again with Saad, Williams and Fogarty; Essendon with Stringer, Saad, Smith; Geelong just creating chance after chance to bring in players, so on and so forth.

It's time we stop concerning ourselves with, "Yes, but how will we get the deal done?" Player movement is much bigger now, and clubs are increasingly playing hardball at the trade/FA table. We need to get onboard with that.

We need to be smart with our targets, of course - Essendon with Dunkley, West Coast with Kelly (initially) and Adelaide with Gibbs (initially) are good examples of what happens when you don't strike a balance. But the time is now to put work into players that can offer something moving forward. Work on getting them on board, then we can work out how we best bring them in later.

A middle-aged KPD and outside mid would be first on the list. Time to go hunting. **** the other clubs.

Throw everything we've got at Ben McKay.

May and Balta also OOC. Have a go, what do we have to lose? Not a key but Trent Rivers is going to be exceptional - at least ask the question and push the Dees on his contract.

Of the mids, Miles Bergman and Shai Bolton are both OOC as well. Sharp, Ash, Impey, Bonner; so many options at various costs.

Take a big swing.

I'd toss a third to Adelaide to take McAsey off their hands and give him one more chance in his home environment. Bergman would be great, could possibly be done with a second and a pick swap since he'll be out of contract. North could well refuse a Ben McKay trade even for our two firsts, but if they get the spoon again, pick 2 as compo along with their pick 1 could be tempting if he wants out.

I think you want to take multiple swings. That was the whole premise of your first post.

Load up with recruits and share out the assets…. and shortchange everyone! [emoji106]

We (allegedly) took a swing at Barrass this year. So it's not like we're not doing it - we just need to throw a wider net, and as Dannnnnnnnn says at multiple players.

Maybe next year, go for both Barrass (again) and McKay. Keath and Jones won't be around for ever, and the Gunslinger is young.

I still think chances of prising someone like Barrass out are next to nothing, but he can only say "no" (again).

Don't want another scenario where we could have had Hall earlier if we had been prepared to give more up - was always going to make us a better team.

Bergman and Callaghan for me as targets. Both fit the type of midfielders we would be after and need.

We also have something called the salary cap. With so many players to sign ahead and heaps of talent that keep improving and demanding bigger contracts, I do not see us chasing a huge fish. I personally do not think we need a big fish either that will chew a chunk of the cap and require giving up heaps of picks. F that! Give me three high end young players for three first round picks, over giving up 3 first round picks for a single "star"

Team is good enough now to selectively build around it. I'd prefer to invest in draft picks or trade for young players over paying overs for "stars" on the wrong end of their 20's. Our main midfielders aside from Libba still have 3-5 years left in them. Inject some youth around them to transition, so we don't become lop sided in experience and age profile.

Back when we won the Grand Final, we had a crap load of older players, and a crap load of kids, and almost no stars in the middle tier age group. Played a part in our drop off for a few years. Aside from Smith, who else on our list is a young gun midfielder? Hence I think we need to address it properly and get some more young guns in.

We've got leftover salary cap, I think. Dunkley would have had a decent contract in front of him, we've gotten JJ's big contract down to a much lower one, and Hunter's out, thoughn we might be paying some of it. I'd like one big fish, maybe a Barrass or McKay to round out our backline for the long term.

I suspect that if we were paying some of Hunter's salary that the media would have been all over it. They love a salary split.

Yeah I think I agree with this, by all means if we can pry out a big gun go for it but mostly should be trying to build around our core now. The core of the sides so good, when Bonts 30 and still going strong that will be our absolute peak, definitely need to invest in some young mids to come through now though. Main thing is we can compete this year, we can compete over the next few years and we have a core that can compete for the next few years after that.

Need to make the most of the now but still make sure we’re investing for 3-4 years from now

We have a very large amount of cash to throw around, with Zaine, Hunter, Dunkley all off the books and Martin, Wallis retirement, JJ also took a significant paycut.

Salary cap is last of our issues right now, using it wisely on re-signings and targeting a pretty-decent sized fish is what we need to do with it, gotta use it smart.

I have no problems chasing a fish in general. I just do not want us to piss away a lot of assets to do so, when our midfield runs the risk of becoming lopsided age profile wise. Its a fine balancing act we need to get right.

Yes we cleared up space. But we also need to make sure we can spread it around well like the Cats do, instead of having a big chunk tied to one player. Which is normally the cost to lure a ready made star over. Barrass as an example, won't budge unless we offer something insane Tom Boyd wise. We have some of the best young KPPs in the league, they normally cost more contract wise, and last thing we want to do is lose them because we have not got the room to feed them all.

That is why I say spend wisely, picks and cap wise. Just don't do another Tom Boyd style trade. We don't need to.

In Ssm we trust to get thr job done.
Could be fairly certain Sam is beating the bushes to see what we can flush out in the next off season.
