We've got leftover salary cap, I think. Dunkley would have had a decent contract in front of him, we've gotten JJ's big contract down to a much lower one, and Hunter's out, thoughn we might be paying some of it. I'd like one big fish, maybe a Barrass or McKay to round out our backline for the long term.
Jordan Butts out of contract (not a free against) too and is one I wouldn’t mind.

I like his bother Seymore better

Weightman signed an extension until the end of 2025.

Never was concerned about losing him but good to have another young gun locked away.
Brilliant, look at his stats and he eclipses guys like Rankine who are getting $800k for the pipe dream of playing through the midfield. Suspect we will lock away all of our guys early this year without Dunkley holding us hostage.

We’ve done so well in regards to keeping our main talent over a long period of time now - Dunkley is really the exception. Tells us what we need to know about any so called culture issues

What are the early views on the 2023 out of contract list? Appreciate it's harsh to go early on some but my views below:

2+ year extensions
  • Sam Darcy (he'd be silly to do any more than 2 years)
  • Ryan Gardner
  • Ed Richards
  • Thomas Liberatore (If Jones can get a 2 year deal at 31y.o. the Libba can get a multi-year deal too)
  • Cody Weighman (done!)
  • Bailey Williams
  • Toby McLean (assuming no injuries)
1-year extensions (if bodies hold up):
  • Josh Bruce
  • Alex Keath
  • Taylor Duryea
1-year extensions:
  • Lachlan McNeil (would want to have a good year though)
  • Laitham Vandermeer (see McNiel)
  • Roarke Smith
  • Anthony Scott (unfairly grouped with McComb for mine)

1-2 year extensions (if trajectory continues):
  • Dominic Bedendo
  • Buku Khamis
  • Luke Cleary
Think we'll be saying goodbye:
  • Tim O'Brien
  • Robbie McComb
  • Hayden Crozier
  • Jordon Sweet (he'll want out)
  • Cody Raak
  • Arthur Jones (hope he proves me wrong)
  • Mitchell Hannan

May and Balta also OOC. Have a go, what do we have to lose? Not a key but Trent Rivers is going to be exceptional - at least ask the question and push the Dees on his contract.

Of the mids, Miles Bergman and Shai Bolton are both OOC as well. Sharp, Ash, Impey, Bonner; so many options at various costs.

Take a big swing.
Bergmann we rated higher than Flea pre-draft IIRC.
Whispers he was gettable this year until Port shut it down.

If next years' draft is as good as some recruiters think, our 2 x firsts suddenly become very valuable

Will Sweet want out though?

The most likely scenario is that he’d be in the same position at most of, if not at all other clubs.

He’s not that good of a ruckman, particularly with teams moving towards more modern around the ground influence. He’s an ok tap ruckman but is a mile off it in every other area.

Suspect he’ll get a better offer. Even if it’s still as a back up reckon somewhere else might give him 2 years. If it’s a team with shaky ruck depth he’d be silly not to look at it

Good summation however I'd be mor incline to give Cody Raak & Arthur Jones 1 year extentions over Laitham Vandermeer & Roarke Smith? I think the club will wait and see how the year goes for these four and others before determining our options.

I just don’t see a path into the team for Raak. In terms of that mid-size / intercept defender he’s behind Buku, Cleary and probably Busslinger for me who are all around the same age.

On Jones he was just so far off it in all the VFL games I watched last year. If you take away his 1/2 game in pre-season last year he really didn’t show much. I do think he’ll get another contract though as we rarely cut non-mature age national draft kids after only 2 years.

If Laith can’t recover his early career form and avoid injuries then I agree. I like Roarke on the list - the bloke has seriously stepped up in big games and I think he deserves first crack on a wing.

I think at the end of 2023 he’ll be further away from a game than he is now. Come 2024 if English gets injured I think we’d go with a 3rd-year Darcy (with 2 full pre-seasons) in the ruck ahead of Sweet. There will be another club offering a 2 year deal and a role 2nd in line.

Don’t stop, I’m so close
Would be brilliant to get him sorted early. Looking towards 2024 Baz will back himself in 2023 to add a few more dollars to his future contract before he re-signs next off season. Marra I zero worries about, if he completely takes off next year he will get a 2019 Naughton style extension before the year is out, otherwise he'll do a Cody style extension. Big Tim the only one we don't have a feel for if the Eagles come knocking with a gigantic deal he'll be hard to keep.

Did that do it for you ossie_21 ?

Vandermeer cops so much unnecessary stick on this forum. Can only be recency bias, he had a not great (but not even that bad either) run to finish the year but any suggestion of him being delisted seems insane to me.
Putting aside the injury risk which has robbed him of consistency its the lack of footy smarts strikes a cord with me. Massive culprit of giving away silly frees, 50s etc... I could accept that if he did damage with the possessions he gets but too often his 5-6 touches are completely invisible.

Only good thing is English will be a restricted free agent (I’m pretty sure). We’ll either get a trade bounty or I could seriously see us matching any offer if we don’t have the ruck stocks to cover him.

So who do we think are training with the club? Baker and Naismith are givens even though I am completely opposed to a ruckman with as many knee injuries as Naismith. Sullivan is probably training with the club as well.

See Raak as a different player to Khamis and Cleary. Both of these guys are 190cm and Cleary is very light - more Easton Wood and Bob Murphy types. Please let’s not try Hannan there every again - the player has to be an excellent mark and reader of the play/quarterback style and that’s not him.

Raak is more likely to fill the third tall role who can play talls and smalls. More a taller Morris or a Grimes role - something we have not been able to address. Last year we went with Parker, TOB and Raak for that role.

Parker is gone and TOB - who should be that person didn’t perform (does anyone know why? He has talent). All are 193 - TOB is 93kgs - big fella and Raak is 83 but will get to 90kgs.

The key ingredient for this role is fierce determination - opposing players must hate playing on them. TOB didn’t show this and Raak did but only in patches.

RAAK & Jones are both development types imo and cutting them after 2 seasons is premature. Raak is still growing and showed glimpses late in the VFL and Artie was always going to need time. Interesting season ahead :)
