Happy with the changes as a whole, but uncertain about Raak. Assume we must have a Cat B lined up, otherwise he had another year that is literally a free swing. You would assume O’Donnell upgraded too so, we better have two Cat B rookies lined up or this makes no sense.

So, with these 3 gone, that leaves the following unsigned: McLean, Duryea, Bedendo, Crozier, Khamis, Sweet, Smith (R), McNeil (R).
Can't see the point persevering with Smith with his injury history. McNeil doesn't show any meaningful improvement. Duryea might be offered a 1 year extension although not fussed if we don't. Bedendo may be given another year to build some fitness. The interest is which of the others request a trade.

My understanding is you can have up to 38 on the main list, 4 rookies & 2 cat Bs to a total of 44.

JOD & Poulter are now on the main list with their extensions I’m assuming?

What about Scott, Sweet, Buku & Roarke, assuming their all senior list now too with their extensions.

If that’s the case that leaves us with 38 on the senior list still, 1 rookie & 0 catBs

Jeez still need a fair cut then, and we’re going to be going deep in the rookie draft.

I’d still cut Croz, McLean, Doc, Roarke, McNeil depending on whether Buku/Sweet stay or go.

Always find this part of the season weird. I like to see changes but it feels a little wrong being happy about people losing their jobs.

No fault to them but I’m happy we didn’t give new contracts to O’Brien and McComb. Was more than enough evidence that they weren’t going to offer enough going forward.
Yeah all year I'm sitting here like "how the **** is McComb on our list", then he gets delisted and I honestly feel sad for him. I think it's because you know they're not bad people, just unsuitable for the list going forward. Still appreciate how good he's been at times for our VFL side

Does it make it any easier knowing most of them were easily in the top 10% of earners in the country last year? And a good portion are privately educated rich kids.

And will still be able to make good money for a while playing at a high level, just not likely to be within the AFL.

I could be wrong, but I thought the rookie list rules were revised so players can get multi year deals as a rookie, provided they haven't been there too long already (I'm sure Sweet was a rookie for a while). I wouldn't be surprised if JOD and Poulter remain rookies for the deals they've just signed. I'm sure VD/Mojo would have a better idea

Thats a turnover of pretty much a quarter of the list if you include Bruce retiring and a couple of players being traded out.

That is gettting close to full refresh/rebuild scenario.

Yeah good point, must have 2 Cat Bs lined up or there’s literally no point in delisting Raak this year. That will be like 5 rookies needed this year to max out the list.

Not ideal, surely a couple of Footscray players in there

With there being less players taken in the national draft we could see more speculative picks taken in the rookie draft.

Yeah the rules have sure gotten a lot more murky around the two lists lately, wish they’d just scrap the concept and go to one list + Cat B.

Was Poulter ever a rookie though, we had to have a senior list spot open to get a spot in the draft I thought? Same goes for JOD, can we move a Cat B rookie onto the rookie list, or can they only be moved onto senior list with an extension.

Do you even still need to do your rookie upgrades with the last picks in the draft or can they just be upgraded.

That would leave us in a much better spot though if JOD & Poults can be on the rookie list still.

Could just be they’ve seen enough and made a call he isn’t up to it.

McComb will likely be better off financially over the next few years as he works as a sparky during the week and earns decent coin playing local footy, so there's that part of it.
He'll be hurting but when he reflects on his journey, he should be pretty proud of himself that he had the balls to persist for 7 years before getting his chance.

I imagine that will be it for delistings until after the trade period.

Given we might have a few guys request trades and they’ll be some movement with our draft picks, the list management team will probably keep the unsigned guys in limbo until there’s more certainty.

The midseason draft places the players on the rookie list, that I'm certain of (so Poulter will have been a rookie). It's weird that it works that way tbh

The rookie upgrades just happen, no need to use actual picks in the draft anymore

The rest I'm unsure tbh. So confusing, and the AFL doesn't even attempt to provide clarity around it

McNeil would have to be upgraded to be kept, so there’s that. Not sure it works in his favour, but I’d prefer to keep him over a couple of others.

Obviously could also be delisted and re listed, but that concept just annoys me

I'm just guessing here but wouldn't suprise me to see both Bedendo and Duryea rookie listed.
Clubs are trying to get the afl to allow them to move players across the two lists without the need to delist first.

List sizes and rookie spots shouldn’t exist, let clubs decide how many players they want the salary cap and not having too many/few players in your reserves will keep it within a band. Every year there’s the ridiculous situations of putting players on or off the rookie list if they warrant a contract they would just get one and post the 5th round of the draft would become one year deals.

They will, however, be able to shift players on the senior list to the rookie list in the time between the national and rookie drafts if the player is contracted for 2022.

That’s taken directly from the AFL website for 2022, if that’s true and you can basically move players between lists as you want it’s basically just up to 42 + 2 cat B total and no real limits around which list you’re on.

I thought clubs were still delisting last year.
