We’re offering more money than the pies

Happy with this for just meaning we have identified where on the park we really need to bring players in for, and sometimes that means you stump up a little extra money.

Silvangi is a rock solid defender but it appears we’re going all in on JOD being the guy to take the main forwards.

I fear we’re going to end up with 3-4 2nd and 3rd defenders and have a massive struggle stopping the best forwards.
I think Collingwood make it work well. Howe and Moore aren't really lockdown defenders, the only one they have that really locks down is Frampton (happy to be corrected?).

Not entirely wrong. Their talls are supported with excellent two way defenders like Howe, Maynard & Quaynor.

Our talls have been supported with guys like Coffield, Cleary & Duryea. Also guys like JJ, Bramble & Dale who aren’t particular known for their defensive prowess.

I have no faith in JOD. Silvagni would be a much better player for our backline than him or Coffield right now.

Like I’ve said a million times, we do not do the high press because we prefer that style of play. We do it because we need to cover and compensate for our weak backline. We do not need to be recruiting the exact players that some people on here think we need to recruit to fix it, we just need stronger options than what we have. Club is aware of it. Otherwise we wouldn’t have chased Barrass.

I actually think Dale is a pretty decent defender, we just don’t realise it because so much attention is on his offensive contribution

Agree with this. I’ve been critical of his defensive play in the past but watching him recently I think he has improved this aspect of his game.

Particularly for no trade assets allows you to add something else to the list as well

Has Silvanghi been good this year or are we being jaded by his game on Naughton when his form was truly miserable.

He's a good 700k p/a type of player. A type you'd offer four years to.

We'll probably need to offer 850k and an extra year but thems the breaks.

Is Jack Silvagni worth a crack as a free agent to sure up our defence. Love his combative nature and he can’t be happy with the current state of the Blues.

Posted this in June, didn’t get much love. Have people’s opinion of Jack changed or is just that there is small chance it could happen that has people excited?

I certainly hope the club didn’t wait until they heard Jack was speaking to Collingwood before we approached him.

I imagine we’ve had his name circled for a while, but there’s always a level of awkwardness around speaking to free agents whilst we had our own free agents unsigned as any compensation we receive for free agents leaving would’ve been diluted by the acquisition of another.

It’s no huge shock that we’re being linked to free agents now that we don’t have any of our own (outside of the few ones who wouldn’t net us any compo anyway).

Gonna be so exciting seeing such strong links to Silvagni over the offseason, only to be cockblocked by the Pies at the finish line.

Dude is a rock solid defender. If he's even remotely gettable via UFA, you'd be stupid not to make a serious offer to him. Getting quality players for a low trade cost is how the big clubs stay competitive
I was going to post the other day how we should be all over Silvagni, but thought it futile. Improving all the time, great one on one, competative, versatile, character, a desperate list need for us

We have heaps of salary cap, he's a free hit at 27 years age being unrestricted, and a position of need.
At 194cm, Jack can play medium/tall forwards, and is highly competitive, give 100% effort.
Getting Matt and Jack off the Blues in successive years is also a massive macca's win.

Someone posted earlier he has very strong personal ties with quite a few Collingwood players, including Houston who was his best man at his wedding. So might make it harder. Hopefully he is also best mates with Chugga!

Silvagni brings a wealth of experience to our backline.
Gotta remember that Lobb is new to the key back role, and both O'Donnell/Buss have less than 50 games.
Plus we're getting him for no draft capital off Carlton, this is exactly the type of move you use your spare salary cap for.
We can then let Coffield go, he hasn't locked that med defender role down yet.

Please Judd McVee and not Bailey Fritsch
If it is Fritsch, maybe Weightmans knee is worse than first thought!

The thing with Fritsch is he wouldn't go as good with us, he gets a heap of his goals leading up to the Balla nd finding space. He isn't use to the ball just being bombed in on his heads like poor Darce gets

Surprised at anyone doubting JOD. Kid is a real quality player.

Dale is a good defender in the contest in the air and on the ground. Tackling his weakness.

Silvagni is an ok move but he’s injury prone
JOD is showing signs but he lets the ball get over the back to easily when flying to spoil! What drives me nuts, is how long it takes him to get up of the ground when he tumbles over!

Many (many!) years ago, Stephen Silvagni was a specialist coach with us briefly, did some good work with our defenders at the time.

Apart from Doc Zimmer and Anissa Groves, is there anyone left from his time at WO? Maybe SOS had regular coffee catch ups with Gary and Anissa, and this will lead to Jack nominating us... (even though I'm still of the opinion Jack Silvagni is not a priority need for us).
