Jeez, this trade period is starting to get really intriguing.

We clearly have a huge cap space, but seemingly no-one of substantial value lined up (Butters, Bergman, Silvagni now highly unlikely).

Unless there is someone we've kept very quiet, we'll be heavily forward loading for a second year.

Our 2026 cap space will be ridiculously healthy.

Unfortunately it’s certainly looking like that. We’ll try to bring in a couple of lower rung fringe types for specific roles and bank the cash.

I’m sure they’ll try again to pry Butters lose this offseason but the eggs might be all in that basket for next year.

Perhaps that's why Dale re-signed now. Extra cash, front loaded.

I highly doubt you would have a fitness test with an opposition club whilst still playing with your current club.
He hasn't played for a couple of weeks

But he hasn't played for weeks because he is injured, so of course he'd fail a test?
The medical doesn't mean they go and put him through a fitness test to see if he can play.

It's more assessing his medical records and injury history in general. The injury he currently has of 'groin soreness' is a pretty big red flag. The club might not want to invest significant capital into him if there's a possibility he might not regain his full health.

I'd imagine he'd be line ball anyway if he has a history of playing around 14 games per year.

It does make trade period a little boring though.

I assume we pick up a small defender (Connor Budarick or Hugh Bond) and a fringe tall defender (Blanck or Serong from Hawthorn). No A graders.

Seeing Lachie Smith improve at VFL level, I think he'll be ok as our ruck depth next year if we need someone to pay a game or two.

We may be in the position of needing a developing KPF for depth as well if Khamis leaves (I assume Marra is no a chance to play with us next year even if he's on our list). That could be via the draft though.

Let's be honest, we have a plethora of A graders. Bont, Richards, Darcy and to a lesser extent Naughton, Libba, Dale and a few others. The Adelaide route of picking up solid role players is a likely outcome and something we should look at if there are no stars available to poach.

A guy like Bond would really improve our small defensive stocks. The biggest hole on our list are versatile medium defenders but hopefully Selwood can come on in 2026. Skilled forward half players are also a big need but the club might back the return of Weightman and the development of Dolan to strengthen the seniors.

Our wings are set IMO. Williams & Davidson is a really strong duo. The list is in a really strong position with some slight tinkering needed to a couple of areas.

Sellwood is a lock for Rd1 2026 IMO. Has been super impressive in the VFL.

If Butters isn’t happening this year, and we just salary dumped Macrae and Caleb…

We should be very aggressively acting to improve our areas of need. Which tbh have mostly been the same for a number of years now.

Balance replenishing via the draft with more likely short term improvement by acquiring known commodities in areas of need. We need experience and better 1 on 1 defending in the backline. If we press so high because we don’t trust our backline - get better defenders in so we can trust them more against good sides.

i think when you’re a) trying to turn the list into a true contender but b) also losing Dunkley, Smith and JUH over the last few years…we might not like to admit it but that’s a blow. The former 2 are very good players. Jamarra, luckily we have Darcy, Naughts and Croft, but he essentially wiped out a whole draft hand, which could be paying off about now. He was a big investment.

Not wanting to cry over spilt milk with the above but more so thinking that losing good, young players should be creating a bit more urgency with our approach. While recognising that the draft is how we get our top talents and need to maintain a suitable amount of selections each year.

I just look at how quickly 2021 came together once we’d acquired Doc, Keath, Bruce and Stef Martin to fix pressing issues. Then Treloar was kind of a cherry on top. That’s the Sam Power that sort of burst onto the scene. Aggressive, savvy moves to round out an already talented list.

Kennedy was a good start to finally fill the hole Dunkley left. Hopefully we get Cody back in full flight to take McNeils spot. We probably get more from at least one of Dolan or Hynes too. But our priority now should be adding a couple of defenders that can provably hold their own.
