I assume we would as he's shown good traits at VFL level.
He hasn’t shown any standout AFL traits imo, just a solid VFL player. Would’ve been keen to see how he’d go at the level before committing to him for another year.

Just can’t see Port offloading butters a year early when he is reportedly happy to stay and consider his future next year. They’ll back themselves in to keep him.
Depends if they think they're contending next year which I doubt they do,

Rozee/Bergman/JHF/Georgiades/Butters are all they have in regard to top end talent currently which isn't much at all

Like they did with Wingard will be more benefit for them to trade aggressively as having him in a middling team next season won't do them any good

Looks Like Michael Sellwood is getting an extension

Excellent news! Really love how he goes about it and I think he would have been in the team right now if he didn't have the concussion and illness after the mid season draft.

Round 1 2026 after a big pre-season he's in the team IMO.

It doesn’t make a lot of sense for Port to trade Butters.

With Nas staying for two more seasons you’d think Port will think they’re a chance at the end of 2027. So they’ll have a better idea of who’s likely to be rubbish heading into that particular season at the end of 2026, so will be able to make more informed trade choices should they match a deal for Zak and force a trade. Hypotheticals lumped onto hypotheticals obviously but unless Butters tells Port he wants out (and even then I’d expect they decline it) then he stays.

The who is shit part is redundant as Butters will go to whoever he chooses,

They're in desperate need of a rebuild and to get as much young talent in as possible and given they traded their first this year for Lukosius they need to do whatever they can to get them in,

They have a decent core of 22-25 year old players who if they draft well in the next 2-3 years with the Butters picks will be in their prime with the emerging high end talent

I don't think Butters will leave as a free agent in the traditional sense, it'll be a situation where Port force a trade as he'll be a RFA. The only situation I can see them accepting the compensation is literally if they finish dead last, which whilst possible is very unlikely given the rubbish clubs below them.

Zak will still end up at his desired destination but there can be multiple clubs involved in the trades. They're in a better position to find out who will have what picks in 12 months time than they are now. Clubs can also trade 2 years into the future, so it probably makes more sense to get picks in drafts that aren't fizzers like this one is.

Little bit harsh, I think he’s been brilliant (albeit a small sample size), but definitely has shown AFL traits and toughness in a position of real need for us.

Exactly he has only been at the club for 3 months and has shown a bit reckon he will surprise a few next year

WAFL football is quite different to AFL/VFL football. WAFL games tend to be more open, less congested than here which can sometimes flatter players who look great in that type of competition. However, I am impressed with how Sellwood has adapted and improved with each passing match. In his first few games he tended to rush his disposals but now he is more careful to find a better option. He's a solid mark and he attacks the ball strongly. Having Jones, Gardner, Coffield and Duryea as his back section team mates has also given him a lot of confidence. He is very close to being promoted and I can see him definitely pushing for a position in the team next season.

I’ve watched him at training and he’s really hard on himself. Any error and he was working really hard to fix it, afterwards expressing frustration with himself. Was trying really hard to impress and show he’s at the level. Works super hard at training, great attitude and has some ability. Good call to extend him.

Interestingly, Butters is included in Port's gimmicky farewell-to-an-era game poster. We know Atkins and Boak are hanging em up, and Butters is...doing what to earn being on this poster with retirees, he's not even the captain.
He is a co captain along with Rozee.

I think a bottom four finish and top 5 pick for him might sway them.

The teams reportedly in the market (us, Hawks, Cats) will all likely be top 6 for the next few years - say all three clubs offer 3 first rounders - after the compo picks and NGAs/Father sons are assigned, by the time draft night comes along, you're probably looking at 3 picks between somewhere around 18-28. And a couple of those picks will be in compromised drafts that have already had some of the best players pre-allocated to Tassie.

A top 5 pick that is unlikely to be compromised, in a draft crop that is probably going to be much stronger than this year's, compares pretty well.

In case anyone else is wondering, this discussion is about Sellwood. I guessed as much (especially from this last reply) but had to go back five or six replies to actually find his name. 😞

Am I the only one who gets frustrated by this?
