If we do indeed land Silvani, it'll go down as one of the dumbest trades in the clubs history.

Right up there with Jade Rawlings where the club felt backed into a corner and overpaid for an overhyped mediocre player with history of injuries.

I suspect Collingwood will laugh their arses off if we go down this road.

Make no mistake. This isn't about a player being disgruntled and feeling unloved at his current club. As his management would have us believe. Its about a player looking for a sucker to take on one last big contract.

Think about it. Carlton have just lost TDK have plenty of cap space, yet they aren't willing to pony up for one last contract for Silvani.

What's that tell you?
Three things:

1). It's not a trade. There's no draft capital involved.
2). It's clear Carlton are having a list cleanout.
3). Collingwood are clearly chasing him. Why would they be laughing their arses off if they missed out?

It’s not a trade, it’s free agency.

The clubs chasing Jack aren’t offering him much more (if any) than Carlton are. He wants a change of scenery.

Given the club has had a fairly large portion of its TPP playing in the 2s or not playing at all, I’m fine with the Silvagni chase.

Edit: Golden_6 beat me to it 😅

What pick are we expecting for Buku? Late third?
Buku would be on bugger all money and is contracted for another season. Given our lack of depth at the KPF position if Naughton & Darcy were to get hurt, I'd be telling him he's staying unless we get overs in deal. I would pushing for a late second.

I can't see how it can be worse than Jackson Trengove or Tim O'Brien, very similar FA recruits as talls from other clubs who got nowhere near playing well enough to justify their contracts
Those guys would've cost next to nothing in salary cap terns.

Jack Silvani will not come cheap.

Sure.
2). It's clear Carlton are having a list cleanout.

What's clear is that they still have to pay 95% of their cap.

Clearing the likes of TDK and Silvani oof their books is going to make that task much harder.

Not to mention how these issue will be made much worse if the jungle drums surrounding Curnows future come to pass.

Which I guess is good news for Alex Cinacota who can look forward to being paid $800k to play in the seconds.

3). Collingwood are clearly chasing him. Why would they be laughing their arses off if they missed out?
Because they will offer him considerably less than we will.

Given the pressure being brought to bear and our obvious defensive issues.

We'll overreach. They'll laugh.

Trengove's $600k a season for us on 2018's salary cap is the equivalent of $850k on next year's salary cap, and that's areas we're talking here.

I’ve had some batsh*t insane ideas over the years such as Naughton and/or Jamarra spending time in stoppages..

But here is my craziest idea and I don’t get some laugh emoji reactions I’m not doing it right:

We need to start playing Bont more as a utility and potentially put him behind the ball a bit more. Here’s why:

  • he’s a tremendous defensive player with height, length and tackling
  • he needs to evolve to be a Burgoyne esque midfielder that goes in at crucial times. Preserve his energy so he can go in and be a true weapon
  • doesn’t need to be only down back, can do forward and wing too but defence is a string to his bow worth adding
  • prolong his career
  • give more midfield minutes for mini bont, rhylee west and sanders if he ever learns to play in there

Laugh away!

If Gold Coast win exit meetings Thursday. If Essendon win training on Thursday.
Will exit meetings take place before the VFL finals series?

I imagine a lot of the players waiting on contract offers or expecting bad news will be playing for Footscray in the coming weeks

I don't think the idea is too far off the mark but I do think it's a little early. If we manage to acquire Butters to go along with Ed, then it might be worth some extra thought.

Do we really want a prime Bont patrolling the half back line when he's one of the most damaging players forward of the ball? This is something you look at when he gets to 32-33 and wants to extend his career by a couple of extra years in a Hodge style role.

We'd be paying JS less than we paid Marra to not play at all this year.

Silvagni is made of paper mache..

However he is a good player, a good defender and we need those. I’d be surprised if the opportunity cost of that space is much at all to a small club like ours. Worth adding a good defender without parting with draft capital

I don‘t think it‘s a bad idea to at least try. Our midfield performed pretty well in his absence earlier this year and we‘d still be able to move him in there at crucial moments or if we‘re getting beaten around the ball

Interesting that clubs believe Good Coast's first round pick 6 is gettable.

That would be an interesting target given we don't have too many other trades on the radar.

I imagine if it's gettable it'd be more for teams with multiple first round picks in this years draft - which would rule us out.

It would be. Aren’t they getting another top5 academy kid in Uwland?
And another guy some say should go top 5.
And Brisbane have Annable.

Potentially, 3 of the top 5 going to Queensland clubs.

I’d be having a serious crack at Butts and Lever. I also reckon Derkson from GWS would be worth a crack but I've heard it’s pretty likely he will be at the Dees.

It’s also time to go all and make a serious offer to Port for Butters, however appears unlikely we can snare him this year.
