Have at It Saints.
You won't laugh when we fall for this pump and dump in desperation and offer him...

Silvagni’s agent: But Mr Silvagni… Don't you think we should ask for more than a million dollars? A million dollars isn't exactly a lot of money these days. Luke Davies-Uniake alone makes over 1.3 million dollars a year

Jack Silvangi is destined to be the first...

playa!

Leek Aleer on $750k and Silvagni on $800 - $850k would be incredible.

I know they have cap space but they won't for long
Aleer 750
Silvagni 850
TDK 1.8
NWM 2.0
King 1.0
Macrae 800
Ryan 600 (I haven't heard a figure on this, complete guess)
Cam McKenzie 400 (absolute minimum to pry any young contracted player out these days?)
Hill 800

9 mil for 9 guys.

My numbers may be way off, but the way I read it is:

Approx 10.5mil left for 28 (?) players? Bottom 10 on on approx min wage, so probably $9mil left for the remaining 20 odd players?

The offers are going to come for Tauru, Wilkie and quite a few other quality players over the next few years - when the budget will allow an average of 450k for each of them ... it's going to be an interesting watch.

Mckenzie would be 700 to 800k. You aren't prying him out for peanuts hes going to be a gun

They would have front loaded guys this year to get to the 95% floor. They can 105 their 2026 payments too.

They're being ambitious. I think that's a good thing, for their sake.

You're forgetting Sam Flanders

Sorry, I know nothing about him, just that he played 12 games this year and was subbed off a couple of times. There's been plenty of guns that have taken a few years to get to their best, but I wouldn't think a 21 year old not having established himself yet would be worth 800k, but if you know much more about him, I'm not going to argue.

Saints are going hard. I wouldn't mind seeing us go a bit harder than we normally do.
Good for them, even though they are overpaying everyone while not having an established base of quality or youth either.

How many long term and A Grade key defenders are there actually in the league?

Jacob Weitering, Harris Andrews, Callum Wilke, Darcy Moore (who I don't even think is a key defender) and Sam Taylor, Sam Collins/Tom Barrass at a stretch?

Daniel Talia, Harry Taylor, Tom Stewart, Luke Ryan, Jeremy McGovern, Steven May, Tom Barrass, Phil Davis, Sam Collins, James Frawley.

Just off the top of my head.

We’ve not had anything close to what most other clubs have. Veterans with a few years left or blokes like Keath who were never A Grade quality and only lasted a handful of years. The rest were very average defenders or players moved from other roles with similar results.

I think it’s been our biggest List Management issue in Bevos era. Not suggesting we haven’t tried, but how hard? 11 years with at most B Grade KPD players is a massive fail.

And when we finally drafted an elite key defender we subsequently turned him into a forward. Not that it was a bad choice but as my wife always says "it would be good to have a Naughton at both ends"

Luke Ryan and Tom Stewart are definitely not KPDs. was James Frawley ever an A Grade KPD, and if he was, then was Alex Keath? Not trying to be argumentative but it leaves a pretty small sample size across the competition (and we haven't needed one for 11 years either - it's more appropriate to say 6-7 years).

We have invested quite a bit of draft capital into key defenders as well, but we've just not had any success there (or in the case of Naughton they were shifted forward). We've pretty much tried to acquire tall defenders (whether they're lock down or peel off interceptors) every year for the last 5-6 years as well. It's not true to say we've not put in the effort, it is true to say we either haven't been able to get what we're after, or develop what we thought we had - but it hasn't been through a lack of trying.

In an age of evermore compromised drafts, I think we'll see more teams that are forever stuck in competitions liminal spaces following St.Kildas playbook of targeted acquisitions. Which in reality is Adelaides playbook and why they were able to make the leap from also rans into genuine contenders.

Having said that. It's not a strategy that only works for middling sides hoping to short cut their way to the top.

It's what Geelong have been doing for years as they miraculously stave off a cliff that people have been predicting that they're approaching for the last 10 years or so. It's also what Essendon have been trying to do for years. So theres a cautionary tale to be had for anybody thinking that the strategy is an automatic sling shot into contention.

I like that the Saints are being bold.

But, I genuinely hope it blows up in their stupid faces like an explosive novelty cigar.
