Signing JOD, chasing Payne then later Barrass, using a first round pick on Busslinger, picking up Coffield?

I think we have made efforts. We do need to grab a mature KPD as our no 1 priority and I would be very surprised (and very disappointed) if we didn't get one this trade period.
We've already started shaking trees with Wilkie.
Picked uo a few in the MSD for the future

Walker looks promising to me. KPDs do take a long time to be ready though.

Even picking up a 30+ year old for a season or two is a solid stop-gap until Buss & JoD are more ready.

Top class key defenders are worth their weight in gold. Consider how Darcy Moore organised and controlled the Pies backline against probably the best key forward lineup in the comp last night. He's definitely the main man in a tight defensive unit. We're unlikely to pick up anyone nearly as good but it's urgent that we bring in a couple of candidates to make our defense stronger. We are trying to do so but to fail is not an option.
Grab Tyler Young from Richmond. He’s a very good underrated KPD. He’s good in the air and quick. Out of contract.

I really like JOD. He’ll be a good player for us. But he was also somewhat of a speculative pick, given he spent most of his professional career sending down a kookaburra. Which is sort of my point, it’s always a bit left field and cheap.

Another thing is we are never willing to depart with our first round pick. Regardless of whether you think that is a good or bad thing, nearly every good key defender has required a first rounder. May to Melbourne. Barass to Hawthorn. Lever was two first rounders.

We did well to find guys like Keath for sweet FA.

I'm sure we would be willing to if we had the ability to attract players worth a first round pick

We would have given up 1sts for all of those players, but none of them wanted us

Tonight's result should be all the proof we need to go hell for leather on a gun back/s this off season. Can't go into next season without sorting it once and for all.
Is it? Adelaide had two AA squad defenders out there, compared to only Josh Daicos for the Pies (and he barely defends).

I’d have thought last nights result points more to the impact of system than to personnel. The Daicos boys can be somewhat allergic to body contact, but other than them their defence are all hard nuts who understand their roles as a collective.

We need a solid KPD like Wilkie, or even Butts/Young. But more important is the mindset and structure of the Pies defence, rather than individual stars

There's definitely some delusion amongst the supporter base as to how much players want to come to the Dogs
Agree. Nobody that’s any good is likely to be traded in. Who could blame them, when they look at how we defend the ground. Good luck back there.

Similarly delusional is thinking that we can rely on the mid-season draft, Cat B rookies and blokes out of the QAFL as our list strategy for defenders.

I really like him and I hope we do.

Surely we are a more attractive destination than West Coast or Norf (the other clubs apparently interested). Both look years away from finals and he's already 27 (will be later this month).
You'd think so but money talks - silvagni shows.
He's coming off a long term injury, I wouldn't begrudge him looking at the dollars too be fair.

Top class key defenders are worth their weight in gold.

After close to 2.5 decades of not having any or enough tall timber KPF's the club is now spoiled for choice, now lies the paradox of having to scrounge for key defenders. Something we havent seen for a while

He isn't even what North need. They have Comden & Logue with Dawson & Whitlock developing.
Comden is quality but often injured.
Pink is average and Logue hasn't kicked on.

We should be, but he's very hard to put a price on.

A 27 year old with 35 odd games to his name - on paper, that would typically be a below average wage kinda player and would probably be offered 2 years. Say 400k?

Now if West Coast or North see his recent run of form as a sign that he might be a well above average key defender for the next few years and are willing to pay way overs to meet their salary floor, they could be offering 600k (I'm spit balling, could be way off), and an extra year. For a young guy for whom this will be the main contract of his footy life, where another ACL might see his career done, that guaranteed extra $1mil that the contract represents might mean the ability to pay off a house by 30. There are a lot of people who will forego team success for that outcome.

I'd find the actual wage offers he's getting quite fascinating. Given how much he potentially suits us to tee, I don't know if many on this board would have an issue with offering 500k?

Also wonder where an offer for a contracted Butts would fall in this current market where a Silvagni is getting 900k.

Talking up VFL players like they’re Matthew Scarlett. Makes me laugh. These blokes are in the lower tiers for a reason. They’re no good
