We lost the Hawks game because Bevo was too dumb to bring in West to play a negating role on James Sicily. We dominated territory in the first half but didn't score enough because Sicily intercept marked every entry. If West was playing on Sicily we would have had a match winning margin by half time.
WE LOST THE HAWKS GAME BECAUSE THEY HAVE A BETTER SYSTEM AND CULTURE. Until we change that culture as a club and supporters of accepting mediocrity of re-signing a failing coach who has been unable to get us into the top four in all his tenure, is a sign of failure and mediocrity. Yes, we won one gf in 50 odd years, but we need MOOORRREEE!!! Two grand finals in our history is not good enough!!!

Better to sook about the club for some posters here. Had a proper crack, package similar chose the Hawks. Not like we are in a serious competition

You don't understand, we have never ever made an offer to a player in a position of need. All we've ever done is sit on our hands and watch them go elsewhere without us even bothering to approach them. I know this because this thread told me.

Given our luck so far this off-season. Why would any supporter be so disparaging about giving Ugle-Hagan another chance? Contracted. Not worth any capital. We can't sell the guy to any other club.

Imagine if we could genuinely turn this around. What a great story it could make. However, the caveat would be that if he doesn't like his rightful place in our weakest line down back, he can get lost. No more symbolic gestures to your tummy unless it's after punching the Sherrin into the stratosphere.
That would be an amazing story, if he kicks the winning goal in the 2026 Grand Final against Hawthorn or Geelong, or whoever.

We can all wallow in this thread.

Some of us can understand we are in a competition where we have a decent crack. We do need to ensure our development is at the highest level for when we do miss our targets.

Many clubs win trade period and suck in the real season.

We have enough talent now with experience building that we should be really stepping up next year, irrespective of who we trade in

Seriously what delusion to our supporters now have about this guy. He has a s much chance of turning it around as I have of winning tatslotto.

There was a poster on this board that had a crack when I posted in round 6 he would not play for us this season, I am not going to quote the post but it is reflective of not living in reality.

Those INK have said he will not play for this club again. From what I have heard they are spot on.

Personally I hope he turns his life around. It won't be with us

West should have played last year, like Treloar should have played this year. He wasn’t quite as good as he was this year, but he had runs on the board and was worth taking a risk with.

McNeil’s two worst games are probably those two games. There are a couple of others who were predictably poor in that Hawks final that West could have played over.

It’s funny - there’s a defence of the selection of certain players revolving around ‘yeah they don’t get the stats but they’re critical for structure’ - this did not apply to West who had a proven record making life difficult for interceptions players, as well as being a genuine goal scoring threat himself. Instead, Sicily absolutely tore his direct opponent up and was highly influential.

Mistakes were made. Lessons were not learned. What worse outcome could have occurred had we taken risks? What better outcome might have been more likely to be obtained?

Anyway.
You stuff up good arguments with wrong facts. West had a broken jaw and played poorly in the VFL. Trealor was sick. Fit either one should have played, agreed but this was not the case.

VDM and McNeil should never play for us again, they are not up to it of we are serious about challenging and their supposed role was fully exposed as a fraud this year.

Their efforts are first class, their ability is not

With our poor over the ground defence would not have helped much this year. Our issues were bigger than 1 player
Yep, doesn't matter who is down there. The crows backline looked great most of the year because they had pressure up the ground. Tonight they did their best Bulldogs impression by letting Newcombe walk it out of the middle and their backline looked like ours

Until we change the way our mids set up and fix the zone, it doesn't matter who the individual defenders we have are

It did seem eerily familiar…

Hawks have been building this list for awhile since we knocked them out of finals in 2016 really. Yes they added their final pieces through trading in Barrass along with a couple of others, but most of their list comes from a proper rebuild. We haven’t finished as low to pick up that level of talent through the draft.

If we don’t replenish our list through trading in good defenders and an experienced mid, we will be in a rebuild ourselves.

That’s the vibe I’m getting too. We have to face reality.

Simple question. After watching the finals so far you need tough nuts in defence, midfield and attack. Do we have enough of them i would say not. Libba, Bont, Westy, Kennedy, Darcy and maybe Harmes and that would be it. Libba one season left probably and Harmes a fringe player.

As a junior, Merrett played for Cobden Football Club and as a kid supported the Western Bulldogs.

Merrett’s camp has also made contact with Collingwood and the Western Bulldogs, according to the report.

Wonder if he'll meet with Bevo or Sammy P?
Cobden play in an Essendon jumper - what a downgrade
They used to play in a very distinctive red and black horizontal stripes (Geelong-like) and were known as the Soldier Beetles.
Footy was fun then ... climbing the Cypress trees behind the goals on game day!

I hear there are two really tough nut midfielders around. Both were Dogs fans as kids, one on the market now and one on the market well, next year I think or maybe this year, who knows? 🤔

That’s why I like Sellwood.

Spot on. Finals come down to so many moments/contests. The teams the have the balance of pace with toughness are the ones who win

Butters I’ll give you, not sure on Merrett’s credentials as a tough nut. Controversial but I’ve always found him a bit overrated. He’s a very very good player but not convinced for the trade cost he moves the dial for us.
