Despite what other posters have said i've been told we're quietly confident on landing Silvagni

I'd only be happy getting Silvagni if we get him reasonably cheap. I'm amazed at the recent hype, because I don't think it is warranted. No way would I want to see us give up a first rounder for him!
I prefer the idea of May, who has been an outstanding KPD over an extended period, plus we would likely get him for a reasonable price.

FWIW I'd also be happy to give Jones another year especially if actually play him. I remain convinced that had we brought him back into the side late in the year that we would have been much better off defensively.
As Doggy said, he’s a UFA. The reason we’re all so keen is because he’s an above average 1v1 defender and would cost no draft picks. Easily worth the relative overpay in salary to make that happen

Would be so much easier to accept if he did indeed fail a medical with us* and simply chose Collingwood.

Instead we now get these teasing quotes and tweets which will make it all feel like another kick in the teeth that we've been played/burned again.

(*Not that failed medicals are the be all and end all - the Stevie Johnson trade for a second rounder to Collingwood was pretty much over the line in 2006(?), but he failed a medical. Went on to be one of the top 20 players in the comp for the next 7 or so years, being fit for 90-95% of games for most of those seasons.)

It also sounds like Houston's friendship with JSOS may be a huge / deciding factor for the Pies. He's mates with Kennedy, but best friends since childhood / best man at wedding level with Houston, so seems like a part of his decision also

A lack of trade price is one thing, but contracting a player of his type and current profile will still come with a not insignificant salary cost and have list management ramifications.

I don't want to get into a bidding war with Collingwood and overpay as a result.

Agree Prof, I'm not a Silvagni fan either, but at some point we have to materalise our salary cap room gain into something.

Otherwise we may as well have just kept Daniel and Macrae on their overpriced contracts to offer us something more in depth and as good blokes around the club. If not Silvagni, and if not just an endless cycle of frontloading contracts forever rather, and assuming we don't lose anyone due a cap squeeze, then who?

Overpaying is what you have to do to sign in demand free agents. If he’s willing to choose us then we should do what needs to happen to get him in.

The alternative is saving the cap space to go through the same thing next year with another player, probably miss out again to a Hawthorn or Geelong and all the while watch the last few years of Bont and Libba fade away because of a list with the same unaddressed weaknesses that have lingered for 10 years.

We don’t have to do anything.
If we can get him for what we think is good value, then fine. If not there are other options that are at least as attractive and possibly more so.

I’d certainly be more excited about getting May rather than Silvagni in terms of meeting our immediate on field needs.

Excited about May? He is 34. Hasn't played a good game for years. Hated at Melbourne. We don’t need another has been.

Does the Norm Smith player called Brian Lake ring a bell . I want a DH in this side we are just the marshmallows of the AFL SOFT SOFT SOFT bring in a DH and a prick and hopefully the other 22 Mother Theresa playing in our side might bring in the right attitude.

The major difference are Lake was 30.
4 years ago yes we needed him. We went for Jones

Brian Lake was also just a bit of a ****wit on the piss May publicly berated his captain earlier this year who’s been carrying the team for the past decade
May has also punched on with two Teammates at Two different clubs i didn’t want that w***er anyway near our club

It was also speculated earlier in this thread that we were targetting Bailey Fritsch. A similarly unpopular choice of recruit. If they both come over, I'm fine with May punching teammates, as long as it's Fritsch. Then everyone's happy and it's a win-win.

I think it's more likely than not we don't get anyone better than an Alex Keath type and we end up developing Croft into a KPD.

Alex keath type is exactly what we need

An Alex Keath type would be excellent. Two to three years of good reliable play in a position of need while younger guys are given time to develop.

Unfortunately I’m not sure there’s any available.
