Gah, just looked into it and I think it's from a fortnight ago. Did Wilkie actually say he was staying after the above came out?
Yep - he phoned Ross Lyon to squash the rumours.

Likely to be their next captain.

we seem to disregard list management when we select, should we?

Sanders case in point, dropped for an elimination final after 21 games, for a fringe player, after being sub...with tassie coming. no consideration for keeping him? his value?

food for thought
No, teams should be picked on merit

Maybe we already know he’s out the door ?
And that’s why they didn’t pick him ?

I love Garcia but

Riley Garcia for Vlastuin + a late second round/third round back?

Tiges need two way mids
Vlastuin just made the AA44 squad, surely even at his age he is worth more than that?

I’ve had some batsh*t insane ideas over the years such as Naughton and/or Jamarra spending time in stoppages..

But here is my craziest idea and I don’t get some laugh emoji reactions I’m not doing it right:

We need to start playing Bont more as a utility and potentially put him behind the ball a bit more. Here’s why:

  • he’s a tremendous defensive player with height, length and tackling
  • he needs to evolve to be a Burgoyne esque midfielder that goes in at crucial times. Preserve his energy so he can go in and be a true weapon
  • doesn’t need to be only down back, can do forward and wing too but defence is a string to his bow worth adding
  • prolong his career
  • give more midfield minutes for mini bont, rhylee west and sanders if he ever learns to play in there

Laugh away!

Not yet -> he is still an elite mid. By all means give him more of an outside role at the stoppages and let younger bulls fight over the contested ball, but you put your best players where they can have the most influence, and thats as a follower.

I think all of you are underestimating how easy it is to do what Bont does in the midfield even in a limited sense. He's been consistently in the top 30, top 10, top 20 even for tackles and pressure acts over the last few years. Even if you asked a fringe level defensive oriented mid to play an entirely defensive role in midfield he wouldn't get to what Bont does. Even if they were asked to entirely lay as many tackles as possible as priority number one, this player would still lay fewer tackles than Bont (who is not intending to be a person that lays a lot of tackles as priority one, obviously).

Is Wilke a 1:1 defender or an interceptor?

Where has silvagni been playing for the blues? seems like a lot of years he has had 20-30 shots on goal and its only the 2025 season where he has only kicked 2 goals and had a serious number of 1 %ers to his name?

I'm half serious here... I reckon this guy would offer us more than Ryan Gardner.

He's still young enough (31) to have another crack at AFL. He had a very good season for Wallan.

I think the loss of form for Jones is debatable.
Lobb has more AFL experience than Buss, but not much of it has been in defence.

Buss has been groomed for his defensive role since before he was drafted back in 2022. If he doesn’t understand what’s expected of him by now then that is a serious problem. Exactly how long do we need to devote to teaching and developing him before it is reasonable to expect him to perform satisfactorily as an AFL level defender?

I'm not sure Tigers would attribute any trade value to Riley Garcia whatsoever
Couldn't agree more. Garcia didn't shine last Sunday.Missed goals , turned over,kicked lots of high floating balls. One of many who have been at the club 4+ years and shown nothing

As of a couple weeks ago, relevant stats were:

Contested Defense Loss %
Wilkie = 21.6%
Silvagni = 16.7%
O'Donnell = 38.9%
Lobb = 25%

Intercepts per game
Wilkie = 6.8
Silvagni = 6.2
O'Donnell = 5.1
Lobb = 6.1

For reference, the likely AA key defenders this year have these numbers:
Taylor - 12.7% loss rate and 8.9 intercepts (both off the charts good..)
Worrell - 18.4% loss rate and 7.7 intercepts
Andrews - 29.5% loss rate and 7.2 intercepts

It's probably not a coincidence that, filtering down to players who average at least 0.5 contested defensive 1on1s per game (so removing non-accountable defenders), Sam Taylor (1st for intercepts), Nick Vlastuin (3rd), Mark Keane (4th), Josh Worrell (5th) and Harris Andrews (9th) all made the AA squad.

Wilkie is 13th in this list for intercepts, and Silvagni is 22nd. Our current highest is Lobb at 27th, then Dale at 28th. O'Donnell is our next best at 55th.

Went on a bit of a tangent here, but the point I'm trying to make is that Wilkie and Silvagni both put up very good numbers, especially compared to Lobb and O'Donnell. Both are strong 1 on 1 while also intercepting.

If you want a serious outlier, though probably untouchable, look at Lachie Jones. He has a loss rate of 5%. He's had 20 contested 1 on 1s in defence in 2025 (as at Round 22), and lost 1...

May is 34 next year me struggled in the back half of this season. We saw what happened with Liam Jones in his last year at 34. There is no way May has 2 years left
I’ve seen what has happened to our defence. Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result is a proven way to continue to fail.

I’m no expert but I can’t understand how a player would pass a medical at one club and not the other. Surely there is a fairly similar process from one club to another.

Treloar surely wouldn’t have passed a medical when he first arrived. Soft tissue injuries were a common problem of his long before his arrival at whitten oval.
Steve Johnson comes to mind immediately

Wasn’t it just reported that he’s interested in winning a flag?

So that report was a lie then
If Jack was going to saints you would think he would of announced it yesterday or today
