I’m well aware of our back 6 in 2016 boasting all-Australians Morris, Boyd, Wood and if not for bad luck, Murphy.

To compare them to our currently thin and makeshift defensive stocks is quite a stretch.

Sure they became club greats, but hindsight is always 20/20.and you're missing the overarching point. 4 of our starting 6 came from outside of the traditional pathway of the main draft. Matt Boyd was a rookie pick. Dale Morris was a Rookie pick. Joel Hamling was a DFA. Fletcher Roberts was in the PSD

Liam Picken was a Rookie.

Its why that day truly is miraculous and a masterclass in list management and coaching.

Forgive me if I don’t get overjoyed with excitement when the opposition walk through our current weak defence because we identified some diamonds in the rough more than 10 years ago.

Weddle, despite his haircut, propensity to incite masturbation and ability to play on the wing, has played a lot of good footy behind the ball. These players are out there, but need investment at the national draft. We tried that with Buss, but the jury’s out on that one. Hopefully he makes it.

I never said that Buss was a sure thing. What I said is that he was the guy who most fit our needs at the time.

Im not sure why you're so fixated on Wheddle. Ive already pointed out that he was passed by every team in the first round. For reasons only known to them. It's their good fortune that Hawks selected him with their 2nd round pick. Just as it was our good fortune that we got Joel Feijah with our second selection in the 3rd round of his draft class.

You win some, you lose some. Like picking Charlie Clarke with our 2nd rounder after Wheddle was off the board.

Put it this way, if clubs like Geelong and Hawthorn keep drafting good defenders with their first rounders while we bring in DFAs and mid-season rookies like Gardner, don’t be surprised if good players want to join that set up as opposed to ours.

The Gardner analogy is just silly. If we cant upsell players on the virtues of playing with The Bont, Darcy and Richards. Then we might as well just give up on trading in top tier players. No matter how difficult it has been.

We tried to get Barrass.

We picked the best defender available when we selected Busslinger in the first round.

We've drafted Croft who judges more astute than I, believe will best suited to CHB. In the first round.

We used the MSD to select Sellwood and Walker.

We've made due with the serviceable Keith and Jones. Sending Lobb back has been a huge positive and we have the free hit with JO'D.

We've thrown a massive offer at Wilkie.

Our issues are 3 fold. We dont defend the middle of the ground well enough. Two of our KPD have a combined game tally of 55 games and are too lightly but as it stands. And Liam Jones is 34, had an early season injury and looks cooked.

Should we have gone with Jones?

Maybe, but Im not sure that his inclusion would've helped address our systemic issues.

Looking at the viable candidates may or mayn't come in next year. Im not filled with much hope that they're the solution and given the Hail Mary punt on Wilkie. I suspect that the club is of the same mind.

Its on the coach to adapt and earn his extension or the calls for his head will come thick and fast.

Our list is imbalanced and it has nothing to do with being a smaller club.

It has when you cannot bring in 3-4 experienced players from elsewhere as Adelaide did. And you need to do it through the various drafts.

Or target elite players from elsewhere like Geelong did with Smith. A player who instantly made their midfield into a much more dynamic one than it was.

Or Hawthorn who were able to add two elite KPD into a defence that was shakier than a meth head on a 5 day bender.

Notice the pattern emerging?

Mitch McGovern?! Wow, may as well chase Jeremy too. A decidedly underwhelming rumour. This is the start of us being linked to every two-bit defender in the league, after Silvagni took the filthy lucre at Moorabbin, and Wilkie seems likely to stay and hope all his new teammates shout him coffees...

Remember the good old days when we were linked with every Key Forward how things have changed

I get Ballarat for the money, yet it’s a small minded strategy. 12k stadium is ridiculous. How embarrassing if our game against Adelaide 35k plus heaps of kids and families would have been played there this year. We should never play there again if we won’t to grow the club. We need to be strong, bold present the current numbers, more attendance than any other docklands club and demand 2 home MCG games each year (just like Geelong gets). As I said exposure is what sponsors and marquee players are looking for, not small fry games in Ballarat in front of 10k people.

If we did not play at Ballarat, we would be selling games interstate and less dogs supporters would be seeing their team. I occasionally go to interstate games but always go to Ballarat on the train. Having said that I think we should not play there again until the redevelopment is finished.

Scheduling any games there at all this year whilst it was under redevelopment was one of the stupidest decisions the club or the AFL has ever made. Scheduling a game against a team that was clearly on the rise only compounded the stupidity of the decision. Games there should be horses for courses and only against teams we are never going to make money from at Marvel. Like Port. GWS or Gold Coast.

We should never play there again if we won’t to grow the club. Sure, Id love to play 5-6 games at the G in front of 65K. But Im not sure how even if we demand it we go about doing it in a world where the competition and its fixture is as compromised as it currently is to serve the needs of the already established big clubs.

Exposure comes through the the broadcaters. It matters not where the game is played to advertisers and sponsors. As long as the signage and guernsey logos are in place they'll be fine.
