So from that - we don't have much of a plan B?

We do keep our cards fairly close to our chest though, so imagine a Butts type may still ne the play if Wilkie shoots us down. May be one or the other so if Wilkie is a no go, see if we can turn Butts' head with a decent offer and spot at FB.

To add to this, he's more of a Duryea replacement than a JJ / Bramble replacement. Better as a lock down defender on smalls / mediums rather than a run and carry guy
I agree and I think that's great. We need a small lockdown type.

I have heard (different website) that we haven't been talking to Butts. We're leaving our Plan B run quite late.

Hopefully the club have already stated with our plan B option because nothing it’s been reported doesn’t mean it’s not happening behind closed doors

Stuff always comes up.

We weren’t even publicly looking at Matthew Kennedy or Adam Treloar at this point of the respective seasons they were traded in.

I’m confident the club has contingency plans for the back line. They may already be on the list, but we’ve tried to lure enough defenders over the last 3-4 years for me to feel that it’s clear we’re aware of our deficiencies.

Trade talks gather pace as 13 clubs meet in Melbourne

Tuesday's gathering saw 13 clubs meet in East Melbourne a long kick from the MCG, with recruiters and list bosses from Adelaide, Brisbane, Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Geelong, Gold Coast, Melbourne, North Melbourne, Port Adelaide, Richmond, Sydney and West Coast in attendance.

So why wouldn't we be involved with this?

Sitting on our hands again. Shocked.

Could be a myriad of reasons. It’s not a formal trade period meeting, so not at all obligated to be there. Staff might be interstate. May not be in a position to disclose our hand to the other clubs at present. May know enough about the other clubs lists, contracts etc through other avenues. Definitely doesn’t mean we’re sitting on our hands as I read somewhere else.

They all know to tread carefully around the 🐐 Sammy Power. He is the Chuck Norris of list managers. No one can sit in the same room, make eye contact and walk away without losing something of note.
He was asked not to attend.

We were probably in a private meeting with StKilda as to whether they would send a 3rd or 4th round pick with Wilkie for our treasured F2.😉.
My unreliable source may have been BigKnocker or something similar. (Floppa?).😁

As described. The pre-pre-trade confab seems like something better suited to a group chat. So its not really a surprise that not all clubs bothered to attend.

Besides its clearly not an offical trade week(s) event until it has a naming rights sponsor and is covered breathlessly by every campaigner with accreditation or more than 10 followers on X.

FFS Trade week(s) doesn't kick off for another month and people are already pissing their pants about what may or mayn't come from it.

Interesting article by Barrett especially this part of it

The aggressive poaching has taken a toll on already-listed Saints, with Rowan Marshall, Marcus Windhager and Callum Wilkie asking their respective management groups to either explore the marketplace or seek more Saints cash, or a combination of both.

That rules out Geelong then, as it’s well known that all the players love the culture that much, nobody is paid more than $130k a year
In on the book wages….doesnt count the John Deere tractor, the Ford Ranger and an endless supply of t shirts

Maybe just coincidence, but Hawthorn were also not present and we’re the two Melbourne clubs still in the prelim finals of the VFL. In fact, we’re the only two AFL sides whose aligned state league sides are still playing.

Maybe a stretch, but I feel like the fringe names are likely to come up in these discussions, especially around likelihood of them being available as DFAs (especially guys like Poulter, Coffield, Baker, etc) and maybe they just don’t want anything leaking out of it?
