In other news....Is there any other news? Hope we don't lose focus here.

WE Can't afford to get hung up on Butters, especially given he isn't pushing hard for it and PA have declared him untouchable.

I wouldn’t force Darcy out the door for a swag first rounders if I believed he was going to be loyal. I think it would damage the fabric of team.

If he made noise about leaving and was coming out of contract in 12 months I’d dive on it.

Yeah I don’t think anyone can really say there’s no price that would tempt them. There is a trade out there they’d accept, but it would be a heavy cost.

A deal involving three 1sts if one is inside the top 10 would have to make them at least stop and think about the risk of a team playing hardball with them next year when he’s out of contract. The Cameron trade after the Giants matched was 13, 15 and 20 for Cameron and ~ F24 and F27.

The potential for him to nominate a team like the Cats next year and leave Port staring down the barrel of 2-3 end of first round picks with swaps going with him after knocking back three better picks this year might give them a little shiver.

Trading future picks but doing it with half-arsed rules that they haven't yet copied over from America causes half of these problems.

A lot less of an issue if we can protect our future first. Something like "if we have a top 5 pick, it rolls over to the following year"

Or "If it's a top 10 pick, you get our 2nd round pick instead of our 1st, and we give you an additional 2nd round pick for the following year".

Port would be betting that new coach/new enthusiasm and hopefully a few more wins will convince him to stay.

Port traded out of this years draft last year because they (reportedly) do not rate it. Port will match any RFA offer and get the same value whether this year or next for a top 5 player in the comp.

If I’m you guys I’d be doing everything possible to get him this year, 12 months is a long time and things change. He might stay at port or Collingwood may come knocking.
Fully agree with you. Can’t see much incentive for Port to trade him this year. He’s a restricted free agent and you’d presumably have enough cap space to match any offers, so a trade can be forced next year.

Unless there’s a very good pick involved this year, or a very good player, I imagine the preference would be the extra year of Butters and the monster trade haul next year.

Steak knives like Riley Garcia aren’t getting this deal over the line. Aside from the limited number of players I’d consider “untouchable”, I imagine it would have to involve a quality player. Weightman (assuming injuries are done), Sanders (assuming he signed long term so no Tassie threat), English, etc. are probably the “worst” players on our list that would help a deal. And I’d rather not lose any.

We wouldn’t get away with a Butters trade this year without losing a quality player in the process imo

The other problem is that they might have a rebound year and another club makes a godfather offer they can’t possibly match, and they get a pick in the teens for him.

Isn't this a bit of a silly statement because one presupposes the other? The whole reason people are calling Darcy ungettable is because there isn't a scenario in which a lot of noise would even be raised or that we would fail to extend his contract.
Yes.

Which is why it’s silly to compare him to Butters in the first place.

The news that we are in for Gold Coasts pick 7 has pricked my ears up.

I wonder what the offer would need to be to win it? I don’t feel 10 & 32 will do it.

How many list spots do we have?

People are reading way too much into it.

What actually happened was there was a minor catering stuff up. When they served all those warm dinner buns they forgot to put out those little wrapped packages of Western Star. Our boys and their WAGs (not being impatient dickheads like certain other club tables) politely waited until the commercial break before they started hollering "Butters! Get butters over here!"

Poor ol' Zac misunderstood and they were still explaining it to him when the ad break finished.

Nothing to see here, folks.
Don’t you hate it when a cafe serves solid butter pats with your hot toast? 😣

Tasmania getting so many picks for the next few drafts, even if they have to trade some, will make forward planning difficult.

It might make sense to trade him now, as difficult a choice is that is, if Port feel like the can't keep him.
I still think the AFL missed a trick in not giving Tassie concession picks as soon as their entry was announced. They could have given them pick 5 (preserve bottom 4) and start of 2R and 3R selections for the past 3 years.

Obviously they would have had to keep trading them forwards but that’s fine - could have traded their 2024 2R for North’s 1R third year (doing the trade Richmond did); and then this year they trade that pick into 2026, etc. It’s so much better to dilute a lot of drafts a little bit then to absolutely destroy one draft - particularly when you add on up to 18 FA compensation picks

Well right now, we really only have one list spot open with JOD getting upgraded. We could open up to 6 more though.

Once the Allen compo goes through, it will be pick 12 & 33 which won't do it. I think we will get pick 41 from Carlton for Buku and we could package that up to Gold Coast which might work.
