Such a gutless club. If we let Jamarra go for a late 3rd and still pay his salary, what are we actually doing. Offloading a potential star to a team we will be competing against. If we don't use the salary to get Butters then no point offloading Jamarra. Ffs be ruthless, tell him he's staying and can rock up to training or sit out another year.

Its quite obvious we are a very reactive LM group. We don't get on the front foot. We wait until post season to start identifying talent required. By that point its too late (see Wilkie and Butts). The ground work needs to be done 18 months out.

Disappointing to roll out the same key defensive stocks in 2026.

To me it seems like this Suns thing is AFL orchestrated to keep him in the league and otherwise he’d be out on his backside and we’d be paying him to do nothing and receiving nothing for him.

I know stats aren’t everything but May’s numbers for the year have been pretty good compared to his career average.

If all else fails and we don’t have another key defender target that’s obtainable, I wouldn’t be against giving him a 1 or 2 year deal, provided he passes a medical and we can get his attitude stuff in check.

Let’s see what the next 2 weeks hold but looks like Buderick in and not much else at this stage.

If hawks land Merrett then you need to zoom out and go back to last years final:

Since then they’d have landed battle barrass and merrit v Kennedy (blues didn’t want him) and Buderick (while losing smith and jamarra)

We’re lucky our drafting and development has been Good because we’re getting torched at the trade / FA table.

Just dropping into the Gold Coast trade thread on their board, there doesn't seem to be too much sleep being lost over Budarick's departure. The general view is that we are being sold a bit of a lemon, particularly if we think that he will fill a role as a lockdown defender. Not a great read, if I'm to be honest.
Well, 3 posters isnt a big sample size so don’t be alarmed.

I wonder if the pivot from the match committee will be looking to go again. From memory round 1 and 2 last year we just had the two talls and then mediums and smalls around them. I feel like Bevo maybe was reluctant to turn to the 3 talls and then we saw down the stretch Buss being subbed up and dropping it down to 2 again in the second half.

I much prefer the three tall defenders personally, but wouldn't surprise me round 1 again if its JOD and Lobb with guys like Sellwood, Truck and Cleary playing as the medium talls and then Budarick, Bramble and Dale.

He takes 4-5 kick outs a game getting cheapies to make them look less shit

This is exactly why if Butters does request to come to us, you just pay the price.

You can probably look back at the Hawthorn board's feelings in 2018 about losing the bloke we're replacing with Budarick, and see similar thoughts.

I’d only want him as a last resort but I do believe that May would help us on the field next year.

Getting someone we can stick on the oppositions forward is something I think we desperately need.

If it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work. But at least I want us to try. It’d be cheap and we wouldn’t be stuck long term

I said it a few weeks back and I’ll say it again with 8 days to go.

We need to attack this trade period hard. There’s enough evidence over the past 3-4 years to suggest that we won’t have a major overhaul of the game plan which can get us into the top 4. It simply won’t come to fruition next year.

Budarick plus a fringe key defender won’t move the needle.

If butters is obtainable in some capacity you just do it. 25/26/27 first rounders.

Then you can shuffle some magnets to strengthen the defence.

All Reports say that Butts is out...So that's disappointing. May have been looking likely until Adelaide pressed us for a future first? that we now need for Butters? Either that or the whole department is incompetent.

Can only hope, but my concern not many people talk about is the lack of leadership now that Jones is gone/went out of the side.

Sometimes it looks like our structure just falls apart and the players don’t know what to do as there is nobody to guide them to help out.

Lobb is an experienced player, but not an experienced defender. Then we have JOD & Buss, who are infants. Then it’s the next cab off the rank in Gardner, who has played about 50 games. Thats why I’d even take a broken Jake Lever instead of a cancerous Steven May.

I’m glad we identified the likes of Wilkie & Butts to address the glaring issue, but not being able to get anything done will be painful. Even Sydney are pretty well equipped for key backs, yet are still adding Serong. We’ve neglected the position for years, last year the Hawks nailed it and got 2 quality ones in.
I wouldn’t say Sydney has much in terms of key defender depth.

I fully concur, if he goes and we pay his salary that’s crazy and it’s still crazy if get a late third round pick as well.
Play with the Dogs or don’t play.

Nothing on salary but I reckon we will due to Trac coming into Sun's
AFL will tick off a new structure for his contract I think
I detect the heavy hand of the AFL in all of this.

Were North not also interested in Jordan Butts? Two clubs couldn’t even shake him loose

I totally get Adelaide wanting to keep him, but I don’t think he’ll be in the best 22 for most of the year and is a break glass in case of emergency player

The irony of people (justifiably) questioning the wisdom of giving Gardner 3 years since that contract was signed, is that if he were coming out of contract this year we'd probably just give him another 1 year deal as a proven VFL performer, good culture, break glass in case of injury key defender, given how few of them we actually have.
We'd also be taking a close look at and talking endlessly about recruiting one of the VFL's preeminent KPB if he was playing for another side.

That is an idiotic lose/lose situation.

One that the club doesn't seem to have any interest in being part of.
