In isolation St Kilda withdrawing their offer to Aleer is pretty bad but the reaction does highlight the imbalance of power between players and clubs in trades.

Players, with multiple years remaining on well paying contracts, can move against the will of their current club with relative ease and without huge public condemnation but when a club does the equivalent, the reaction is still much stronger.

I see it from Aleer's perspective, he seemed to have a verbal agreement from St Kilda in place for some time but I don't mind a club doing what is in its own best interest for a change.

The reality is if we’re trying to find a kpd now it’s too late, needed to be done months ago.

Should have had a back up plan to Wilkie
Who though? Be realistic. All the good ones are already contracted, many teams lack quality defenders, its a very weak pool league wide. Wilkie and Butts were the only two probable names that floated up this offseason, and Wilkie thought about it, and Butts never really eventuated beyond asking. And no, fringe VFL level players and intercept defenders which we have plenty of don't count. A genuine man on man type that will free up Buss, Lobb and JOD to play to their strengths. Easy to pot the club when the hands are pretty tied on whom we can bring in.

Connor Budarick but he might be part of the JUH trade anyway
I suspect he will be. It is in both clubs' best interests to do everything they can to obscure the value they're paying/receiving for JUH. I expect the trade will be very complicated with Budarick, JUH, and a raft of current and future pick swaps that are impossible to add up.

Aleer is a cap issue. Nobody will take Steele so now that can't afford Aleer. Especially since they had to pay up to keep Wilkie.
So we actually helped them by stopping them from overpaying for Aleer 😭.

I think a lot of the Aleer hate on here is based on the stupidly high offer from the Saints. If we could get him for $500K for 3 years I'd be happy with taking that risk on him (which is apparently slightly more than GWS offer).

I recommend those who think a key defender will fix our defensive issues, listen to this.

Another key defender would help, but our system also needs adjusting. It can be both.

We need a proper full back, a last line type of KPD. Barrass did it perfectly for the Hawks this year and in finals, but that ship sailed long ago.

Curnow met with Bailey Smith today. Sounds like a great player to get you to request a trade to their club!

I see SDK as being more advanced as a KPD than our current stock, and a good fit with what we have. Really good age as well. We'd be an attractive proposition playing time wise as well. If there's been a late play by St Kilda that ends with him being dislodged, I find it hard to believe we couldn't have done the same.
All of these things are verifiably true when it comes to SDK. But we cant just ignore the reality that if theres anything at all to the rumour. He'd be going there not because of the draw of playing for the Saints or Ross Lyon. He'd be going there to reunite with his brother. Something that regardless of our attractiveness or otherwise we just cannot offer.

I get his argument, but it's overly simplistic at best. Every team needs a key defender to shut down the opposition's best KPF and we simply don't have one that's up to scratch. Lobb and O'Donnell are simply not good 1on1 key defenders when they have to match up on the opposition's best forwards. Having that player in our back 6 means that Bevo can begin to tinker with the system with a greater degree of confidence. In 2021, when we were last successful, it was Alex Keath. Whoever he is, he doesn't need to be a superstar, he just needs to beat his man.

Playing ability aside, you can’t help but feel awful for the bloke.

Dreaming of a new life in VIC on 700k+, playing consistent AFL footy, only to have the rug pulled because daddy wanted his son to get a pay day. Hope the Dogs don’t chase him but would love to see Pies or North give him a chance.

I know we were the number one in points against last year but I feel like we still weren't a good defensive team like Johnno was suggesting. We had a couple of outstanding games against good teams (Sydney and Geelong) that we didn't have this year but for the majority it was similar to this year where we were just beating up on bad teams and keeping them to zero scores, so I agree in part with Jenkins

We were absolutely flying in the second half of last year, I think that is probably the game plan working to its highest effect as evidenced by the Sydney and Geelong commanding wins. And even when we were at our best we still conceded cricket scores pretty much every four weeks (Brisbane, Port, Adelaide and Hawthorn in the final) because the second our midfield didn't dominate the defense was vulnerable

I do think we need to get a defender in but improving the stock is only a small part of the issue, changing the way we defend is the most important part. I thought Lobb had a great year until pretty much the last round, I think JOD will be a fine player in a more simplified role. I'm not as high on the others but Buss is still young and has time to change things
