It's odd (or is it?) that most of our young and talented talls seem to be tried early as forwards, even those like Naughton who came to the club known only as a defender. Are goalkickers more glamorous? Are they that much harder to find? Is it because defenders take longer to develop than forwards?

Is a 70 goal forward even necessary? We kicked more H&A goals than any other club in 2025 and our leading goalkicker was Naughton with 59. Brisbane won the flag and their leader was Logan Morris with 48 H&A goals. It's great to boast a power KPF like Jeremy Cameron or a Buddy Franklin but that doesn't guarantee you a flag.

Let me ask this question. How many goals a year is a top line defender worth? If you could seamlessly (ie without unsettling the player) convert either Darcy or Naughton from a 50+ goal KPF to an AA-winning KPD in 2026, would you do it?

Given our diverse scoring power and our current KPD malaise I'd certainly consider it, especially if I could be sure Croft could slot into the vacancy as a 30 goal second string KPF. The newly minted KPD would have to be more than just an interceptor though.
Really good questions Dogwatch.

My personal opinion is key position defenders of a high quality are significantly under rated but are also rare to find.

Harris Andrews allows Brisbane to have developing key forwards as his dominance in that role is now unmatched.

The Dees won the flag with May and Lever and ok forwards.

The pies Moore.

Ideally if you have one at each end you are well placed.

If one end or the other is more dominant you need to adjust your gameplan to reduce the exposure of the weeker end.

For us we really need to put more emphasis on defending not just the personnel. It is this that is critical for us to improve and an obligation on the coaching group

I'd like to know the logic in trading Khamis. You'll get next to nothing for him, whether it be this year or next with a pick that will most likely never impact a game. But if he stays next year he will play a number of games and be of some value and potentially could play well enough to establish himself beyond next year.

Its more respect for Buku. He is not going to be in our best 23 and will get greater opportunities at the Blues. He is likely to have less value by the end of next season

There was more than enough time between Adelaide making their interest know. And the club shutting it down for Sanders management to whisper their interest in a move to any number of people looking for an opportunity to be first with the news during this typically interminable Trade Period.

It feels to me like Sanders has been a victim of a drive by shooting. Especially in here where he's seen as disposable in peoples thirst to be part of a trade. Any trade. The names are always different but its a cycle that we see repeat every single Trade Period.

Unless something of interest actually happens.

Ive had enough spinning of wheels and going around in circles.

Norm. Out.

We're a bit too nice when you think about it.

Weaken our depth to give him more opportunity at another club for not all that much in return.

I'd rather keep him than just hand him over.

Saints trade strategy only makes sense if they get to a GF or actually win one. Loading up to make the finals, make a prelim, what does it matter?

Hands up if you think St Kilda will win the GF in the next three years?

The Fools Gold strategy. I'm happy to build.
Yeh. They carrying on like they're contenders with the trade strategy.

They should be fully rebuild.

Still find it hilarious they took a coach back that basically took a dump on them from a great height!

Cool, so GC watched JUH play in that game recently but the dogs had no idea he was playing.

This is going to be a bad trade period
That's odd cause our indigenous welfare officer was playing that game as well

Wasn't that Varcoe's role? I didn't think we replaced him.
Guessing he must be focusing on the pathway stuff and not officially in the role then

Jason Williams is his name I believe

Can someone please explain to me how Brisbane are expecting a first round pick for an out of contract 29 year old Cal Ah Chee?

Dunkley was a best and fairest coming into his prime but we were supposed to accept scraps because he was out of contract.

Late first rounder, early second rounder is probably in the late 20’s? Ah Chee is a gun and a proven finals performer. Last year I thought he was close to the Norm Smith. He is a huge part of 2 flags. I don’t think it is out of the realms.

This Jason Williams?

Or do we have someone by the same name not listed in our coaching group on the club site? The closest I see is Prismal as far as the listed coaching staff roles go.

Becoming our usual off season
I guess when you go into trade period you’re hoping that the club sees things the same way you do. By the way, everyone sees the club slightly or very differently.
But in the end you either want to see list improvement, draft position improvement or stagnation.
We are completely in the stagnation category, we haven’t really done anything spectacular since Treloar came.
I’m not sure why we sit on our hands consistently and expect improvement in some pretty ordinary players.
Our KPDs are average, they might improve with a few preseasons under the belt. But they will only become serviceable at best.
This is purely my view and I hope I’m proven wrong. I’ve seen enough to believe we can’t be top 4 with the defensive setup we have currently.
The draft is going to be heavily compromised in the coming years so unless we jag a gem like Freijah deep in the draft, it’s going to be rinse and repeat for a few years yet.

I think we need to jettison this idea of 'respecting' players by allowing them to move on at will.

With the power imbalance that players have in trades, I just don't think we should trade anyone if it is against the club's best interests.

The club respects players by having great coaching, high performance staff, facilities, culture, comradery and honouring contracts

To my mind, the club needs to respect itself more.

Do we sit on our hands though?

Do we sit on our hands though?
As Chalkie correctly states we all see this differently.

List change and improvement has a number of facets of which this Trade Period is simply one. There is free agency, drafting inclusive of trading on draft nights, pre season draft, DFA, Category B rookies all combine for list changes.

Improvement also comes from a combination of individual players development as well as all facets of game style development including players positions, defencive set ups, attacking set up both inclusive of movement as well as stoppages in various parts of the field and ball in dispute.

To improve you need to tick off as many of those boxes you can.

In both areas you could legitamately argue we do or don't sit on our hands. No one really knows what truely moves the dial other than emperical evidence showing it has to be more than one or 2 facets, ie no one who has 'won' the trade has gone out the next season and blown the opposition apart through that factor only.

I would like to see multiple of these facets improve or Chalkie is also right in that not doing so will condem us to mediocrity

Maybe we need to be more like Geelong. Target a really good player and work on him for 2-3 years. Like they did with Smith. Has to be someone we’re confident can eventually be prised out. (This is why GWS and GCS are so often raided.)

Wilkie seemed like a random throw at the stumps. A late thought bubble. It nearly came off to everyone’s surprise due to the amount of salary we waved in front of him.

The only player where we seem to have taken a strategic approach has been Butters, an operation still to reach its conclusion.

Do we sit on our hands though?
We don't get trades done. Well...we do for C graders who are not getting snapped up by anybody else. Give me a topliner that we have got other than Adam Treloar!!! On the flip side look at all the good players that have left us for differing reasons.
I have the impression that we (as a club) don't like the idea of winkling out good players from another club. We don't appear to be proactive in a manner such as other clubs. We seem timid.
Now I understand a lot of that maybe we swayed by the fact that we do not play the media game. The Bevo actual detesting and distrust of the media makes us probably the most mysterious club to media types.
I like that....I hate the media. But player managers talk to media and we rarely are mentioned as being forward in chasing players.
The Wilkie hunt was slightly different i will grant you. But were we into him from a long way back or after a poor ending to the season?
Butters is another one. The assumption is...oh he's from Darley, loved the Dogs, loves Bont....He will play for the Dogs.
Don't worry 10 Victorian clubs are going to open the check book and offer the world to him because he's an absolute jet. I doubt we will get him. My reasoning is sound....we have never got a jet before, so why would we be able to now?
Anyway hopefully we get some improvement one way or another. I like St Kildas strategy, it's risky but at least they have jumped in before the Tassie concessions and have had a go. Whether it works or not we will see.
