Apologies for any inconvenience. We will try to find a replacement.
You may now restWe’ve all been here, keyboard at the ready, waiting. I’m satisfied now, weekend well spent.
Jones replacement? Why not just keep Jones then.I would imagine purely as a Jones replacement for list build purposes and a break glass option for the 1s. Wouldn’t have been my ideal option but I’m not mad about it either.
Jamarra and Buku for Budarick. Imagine saying that 12 months ago!

Don’t disagree but with Butts I imagine it’s his manager telling him to hold off more than anything. Imagine the offers he’ll be getting next year when he’s an unrestricted free agent.I’d be putting pick 14 on the table for Butts tomorrow morning. Sure it’s an overpay but that pick really lands at about pick 18-19 and Butts will offer more than any draftee for the next 3 years.
We owe it to Bont, Libba, Treloar and co to have a crack during the end of their careers.

Ahh we've got material for daysButts will open up
Joel Freijah would go top 3 in his draft if it was redrafted right now.Joel Freijah has made more impact in his first 2 years then any mediocre player we could’ve traded pick 45 for
This idea that draftees can’t make an instant impact isn’t true
I would’ve thought Jamarra for budarick would’ve been pretty straight forwardSurely we can get budarick for less than 37
Why does a player being out of contract only slice their value when it's our guy leaving. Coming off a pretty shit season too
You need depth players and placeholders because there is a salary capNo problem — here’s what should be done differently, in concrete terms:
1. Actively pursue players who improve the best 22
Not just depth or “upside” types — players who would start immediately in key areas of need. That means going beyond “asking the question” and actually structuring deals that get completed.
2. Be willing to trade out to trade in
You don’t improve a list by guarding every mid-tier player. Other clubs create movement by moving pieces — we hold and hope. List spots and currency should be used, not protected.
3. Use salary cap space as leverage
If you want to compete with clubs who have more pull, you need to make offers that force decisions. That doesn’t mean reckless overs — it means being assertive instead of conservative.
4. Stop treating free agency as a waiting game
Waiting a year or two for players to “maybe” leave their clubs is not a strategy. If there’s intent to land someone, start putting pressure on well before the contract expiry.
5. Combine drafting with targeted mature additions
Drafting well is only one pillar. Every contending list uses both internal development and external recruitment. Development should complement trades — not replace them.
So if someone’s asking “what would you do differently?” — it’s simple:
Be proactive, not hopeful.
Initiate deals, don’t just monitor them.
Back your list build with meaningful additions, not depth placeholders.
And treat improvement as urgent, not optional.
That’s not rhetoric — that’s execution.
37 and 33, for Budarick and 29 would make it a bit better.Surely we can get budarick for less than 37
I'm hoping for something like this too. If GC are moving on 6 and 7 for Petracca id have thought they also get mid range picks from Melbourne that could be in play too37 and 33, for Budarick and 29 would make it a bit better.
I wouldn’t be trading buku unless it’s upgrading our 33 to jsos compo37 and 33, for Budarick and 29 would make it a bit better.
I think it was more of mutual delisting, not in the team and not getting any younger - it’s on record that he wants to play on. Best outcome for both partiesJones replacement? Why not just keep Jones then.
i think Frost is better than Gardner but Gardner is the break glass option.
The more we stop gap the older Bont gets, we have an opportunity now so let’s not waste it with list cloggersI wouldn't mind Frost as a 1-year stop gap.
I really like Ballard though and am surprised he hasn't been mentioned outside of we BF chatters
I get we want a key defender but Butts is being hardcore overrated here, barely worth a second round pick.I’d argue that it’s about a 5% chance that a draftee would have more impact on this team than Butts would have (over the next 2-3 years).
Suns asked for 33 for Budarick, so I doubt they’d be giving up anything other than a straight swap for 37.37 and 33, for Budarick and 29 would make it a bit better.
That would be a gross trade...Suns asked for 33 for Budarick, so I doubt they’d be giving up anything other than a straight swap for 37.
Let’s not forget that we find ourselves in an interesting predicament with Butters. If we think we are in a position to facilitate trade next year after a bid match from Port, we will want to protect our future assets. The more we stop gap the older Bont gets, we have an opportunity now so let’s not waste it with list cloggers
Thats just a bigfooty assumption. No one knows what the price was and whether that’s why we didn’t pursue it.That can’t be right as we enquired about him but the price was too high
Imagine putting all eggs in the Butters basket and it failing.Let’s not forget that we find ourselves in an interesting predicament with Butters. If we think we are in a position to facilitate trade next year after a bid match from Port, we will want to protect our future assets.
With the diluted market for key defenders and clubs not wanting picks in a weakened/compromised draft this year, it was a difficult position to begin with.
We had a swing at Wilkie which was fair enough, but giving away assets for players that may or may not be marginally better than what we already have doesn’t seem to make a heap of sense. This has been echoed by Regan and Power in interviews.
Frost is a player capable of playing back shoulder and won’t cost a cent in assets. Given the likely departures of Jamarra, Buku and Jones, key position depth for free isn’t the worst outcome - even just as a break glass or in the 2s.
