Any chance we pay out Gardner? Lovely guy but no point have a 30yo on the list who can’t play seniors. He is a genuine list clogger, taking vfl positions we can develop other in.
If we want a backup, get Frost.

Zero chance, even if we picked up/pick up a more capable key defender

I wouldn’t even be certain he doesn’t get re-signed before next season starts

Yep, you’re right on both fronts. Learn something new everyday.

So effectively if Coffield is the last delisting it means we can only add one DFA, assuming we take 3 picks in the National Draft?
That or a rookie?

I'd say zero chances. If Gardner is just taking up a VFL position then Frost would be doing the same and is at best a sideways move if not slight downgrade.

Gardner is only 28. Doesn’t turn 30 until half way through the 2027 season.

I have never been a Gardner fan, but thought he deserved a run of games this year. He was brilliant at vfl level.

His a confidence player and I think a run of games he’d of eventually carried his form over and we’d of been a better side for it in the long run.

I see a world where he plays a lot of football next year and he is serviceable in a contending team. He needs the right ground level players around him though as he a major liability at ground level.

I also don’t think the answer is one key defender, the answer is either a complete makeover of the back 6 all shapes and sizes or gameplan. I reckon Jaques and Budarick are certain starters round 1 26 (I watched a chunk of preseason last year and Jaques was the most impressive of the young guys before injury). Selwood a probable, looks a real compeitor. Gallagher would also be a chance at half back. Freijah could also go back if Treloar plays mid minutes.

VFL form is not a reliable indicator of AFL performance.

Frost can at least play afl level. Downgrade? Frost isn’t a great option but was replaced by Barrass and Battle
Gardner couldn’t get in front of any of ours.

The club has tied itself in knots over a very long period of time trying to bring out Ryan Gardner’s potential. He has been given more opportunities based on less AFL level performance evidence than any player in history, and ultimately for very little reward.

Sometimes things just don’t work out despite the best intentions and efforts of all involved.

I think it would be far more prudent for the club and Ryan to part ways now, rather than keep him until the end of his contract. We already have too many players on the list that we don't expect to play in our senior side next year, and that is before we draft a new bunch of young recruits.

Gardner's continued presence on the list adds too much complexity to the task of plotting out KPD player development strategies around him than his playing record suggests is warranted.

Keeping non-established players on the list for too long could also arguably set a bad example to new recruits, potentially misleading them to thinking they have more time to make it that they really do.

For example, I think Busslinger is already running out of time to make it at AFL level and Gardner pre-dates him by a long way.

Gardner & Coffield both have the same problem - lack of confidence.

Coffield takes the safe option and can't create with his kicks. He's always looking for someone else to take responsibility.

Gardner is just a rabbit in the headlights.

You could potentially solve Gardner's problem by giving him a run of 5 - 7 games but its a huge risk. Even if it succeeds , he'll never be more than good- serviceable. He might stifle the opposition but he won't be a creator.

Gardner is on the list , and may be called upon next year . Lobb is no spring chicken & JOD throws himself around.

I'm convinced this club has absolutely no idea what it's doing half the time
And I’m convinced its supporters have less idea. None of the delisted guys are taking us to our next flag. Blind Freddy can see that mate

Barely a third tall is how I would describe him too

The question is who comes in if Buss is injured for round 1 next year? Cleary played tall early this year and I think he looked far more comfortable defending smaller players than playing tall. Khamis is much better forward, I think he looks vulnerable back but he is an option. The other three haven't made their debut but not sure Jacques or Sellwood are playing tall, Walker looked very impressive forward in the VFL finals and could end up staying there. List needs say he needs to stay back but it hasn't stopped us before. If the answer is Gardner then I'd prefer the answer to be Coffield

I don't think he should be on an AFL list either but the way things are shaping up I could see him playing double digit games for us
Doesn’t matter how many goals we concede, if we kick a bazillion ourselves right? Walker stays forward 😂

The problem is that lack of confidence is no longer an excuse. They're both older than 25 and have played plenty of AFL level football.

If you mentally can't withstand the pressures of an AFL game, then unfortunately you aren't good enough no matter what sort of physical ability you have.

You can't justify bringing in a lower tier level of player to have a 'run of games' if they are experienced. If you can't perform straight up, then bring in someone who is younger and actually has room to improve.

Yes, but none of the guys we have recruited will either.
If you are talking just this year then it’s Buderick. Give the. Like a chance

If you are talking last draft period, we picked up some absolute gems

This ^
Gardner has been in the AFL system since the 2015 draft, thats 10 AFL pre seasons, how many players get this sort of opportunity?
Should be shipped off to the Tasmanian VFL team, he has no place in the AFL system, geniune list clogger.

Who you kidding, Gardner has a lack of ability as well

We’ve gone from dreaming about Wilkie to convincing ourselves about Coffield and Gardner.

Post trade period sadness hits hard.
Gardner's a great guy around the club but he's clearly not a best 22 option. Coffield isn't best 22 either.
Clubs can carry one of those depth options, but not two. Gardner has a contract.

I thought Jones was cooked and we were right to let him go, and he would have been ahead of Coffield to play on my pecking order. On VFL form, Gardner performed ahead of both of them and if he wasn't contracted this year I'm not sure he'd be on our list either.

It’s easy to throw around list clogger but the reality is we need a back up kd in case buss goes down. Gardner is suitable backup.

Is he a suitable backup? Has played one game in the last two years and it was probably the worst game he has played in his career, in a career consisting of a lot of low moments
