Croft played games last year and was training strongly until his latest setback.

We've shown we're happy to go in with two talls at times.

If all of Darcy, Naughton, Buks, and Croft are injured within the first half of the season I don't think we're in good shape regard.

It's a good story but I'm not sure Lewis is the best option right now. He's not exactly a like for like replacement for Harmes and if we really want KPF depth, we've had months to address it.

Not sure how we’d have addressed it when we haven’t had a free list spot until now?

Do we really need a like for like replacement for Harmes? We already have a bunch of half forward/mids on the edge of the team in Hynes, Sanders, Treloar, Gallagher, Weightman to come back, etc.

Maybe a wingman?

I think it does, though, because with a lesser draft pick should a player leave it makes it far more likely that the original club offers a better contract to keep the player, because losing the player isn't of much benefit.

Like West Coast has salary cap room to burn - do they use some of it to keep Allen if they were getting pick 9 for him (and later with bids) rather than pick 2? Does Allen stay for more money at West Coast?
Disagree. This rule change only affects players who would draw tier 1 compensation.

In the example you've given it just means the club that has been luring the player away (in most cases on top of 1-2 years foundation digging) will have to find a slightly bigger rural acreage, clothing sponsorship etc to clinch the deal.

We can't know for sure (and I am happy for you to disagree) but my feeling is that this will not stop most of the player movement under FA. Just the finer detail of how they go about it. It probably means better deals for tier 1 FAs.

I hate that free agency change. Who decided pick 8 was the cut off? Just a random number.

Scrap compo all together and then shit clubs might actually want to keep their players instead of encouraging them to go like McKay and Allen.

I think now with the rubbish wildcard round there are 8 teams that don’t play finals.

She the end of the season we've been through trade period, a draft and a rookie draft. That's more than enough opportunity to address list issues.

I'm more in favour of waiting until the MSD. I really don't consider a deep tall forward an area of immediate list need.

Only 6 play finals with any serious chance at a flag.

8 miss out and the other 4 play exhibition pot boilers to keep the rivers of gold flowing in what used to be a bye week, before becoming cannon fodder for the serious aspirants the following week,

The FA changes mean that lower clubs will fight harder to keep players. If it comes in this year it's more reason for port to match a Butters bid if they end up bottom 4. A bottom 4 pick this draft will be worth a lot more than what dogs can offer. their first and compo could be traded back to 3 mid first round picks to secure their NGA top prospect and another player in the draft in the top 10. The change wipes that scenario away. Wherever Dogs end up at the end of the season means the first round picks dogs trade are going to be worse in a bottom 4 scenario and about right if port finish 10-12th place finish.

Agree. Unless there's an outstanding prospect I'd rather wait and see. I don't think anybody has yet identified a "head and shoulders better" prospect like that who is absolutely demanding an AFL list spot.

Every footy season throws up the unexpected in terms of injuries, retirements, etc. We just don't know yet which area of the ground we'll have the depth crisis in. Having a spot in reserve gives us some insurance against that.

But even if we don't have an injury crisis, if we wait until the MSD it also gives us a chance to confirm the form of those players under notice who might have just missed out in last year's draft.

Or perhaps another unheralded 19-20yo will have finally found his role and his form. And has started killing it in one of the state leagues.

Or we might even want to put Billings on a 6 month contract if he's firing in the VFL by mid-season and we look like being serious contenders, particularly if we can add that sort of HF capability to the list.

Shows the big wraps the club has on Croft.
He is a taller, more athletic Aaron Naughton. How lucky are we?

I dont think we need to go down the like for like path when it came to replacing Harmes on the list. A player who in my view was going to struggle to get a game in a side with a presumably fit Weightman and West a rising Hynes, Dolan and possibly Arty Jones. And given the mountain of developing talls that we currently have it makes more sense to go for a mature body who has an understanding of our game plan and relationships with his teammates. Rather than sit on the list spot or look around a similar type from outside of our system.

Good news but Naughton finished 4th in the best and fairest in his first year, playing as a kpd. Will be happy if he's half the player tbh
Further proof that Aaron Naughton is the most underrated player in the game.

Naughty’s second half of last year was as good as any key forward. If he can be fit enough for a whole year alongside Darcy they’ll be a nightmare to deal with. Especially if Westy continues his progression.

We were always going to be made to pay for Butters. Top 10 player in the comp, in his prime. Port would’ve had to finish last to consider it, if compo stayed the same & that was really unlikely as there will be a few teams below them.

He’ll be worth it and we already have a great group of young players across all lines but we’ll have to get creative if we want all our NGA / FS players as well. Likely to be impossible unless they slip through to later rounds.

I think people overrate them a bit because of their connection to the club. Not these one's specifically but like how's Lual doing? There was a lot of disappointment when we missed out on him.

El Souki is looking like the only one we may have to pay up for and even he's behind the best small forwards in this year's crop at the moment.

Hok Marial may surprise I suppose, but has a long way to go. We may get him as a Cat B rookie yet.

West is looking like a late pick if picked up at all.

Not sure about Cooney.

Definitely depends on how they go this year, it’ll be impossible if multiple are predicted as first round prospects after trading for Butters. But they could easily all go later at this stage.

Very much a situation where we’d want them to show enough for us to draft them but not too much that we miss out.
Very similar situation to Sydney passing on Carmichael after trading in Curnow. Except they would’ve likely missed out on Kyle as well with these new draft rules unless they found another first rounder.
