TBH if Saints wanted to be considered a serious football team they can protect the interests of AFL clubs as a whole by not giving into player power, insisting Wilkie stick to his contract that he signed himself (while I obviously want Wilkie to help our team I am less sympathetic to the views that he should be angry because his teammates are getting paid more, he signed what he thought was a fair contract and he doesn't have a right to control what the Saints does with the rest of its salary cap money).

They can then use Wilkie and their recruits to win games next year.

Issue is they will probably realise that they are in a bit of a salary cap pickle - especially if Wilkie does ask for more money when he comes out of contract - and there are draft benefits too, so they'll probably trade him.

I cant see us trading a single player to the Saints that they would want and we would be open to giving. Some of the names mentioned are Richards (LOL) or Sanders + Freijah. I get it that they want something of value but I cant see us giving up a decent player when our goal is to top up and win a flag. Its a unique position as the saints are clearly trying to have a crack at finals next year by "topping up" rather than a rebuild of selling off a good player for picks. Just cant see how this trade gets done
the whispers are Sanders.

Any chance of a community note saying much the same about VDM or McNeil? Player’s who have much worse directed at them and more often than Gardner has ever had.
Often coming from the same people that would complain in 2022-23 how we lacked legspeed in our team, yet want it both ways.

Doesn't necessarily have to be one of our players. Power is pretty adept at piecing together 3 and 4 club packages.

Sam Flanders to the Saints certainly opens up a trade opportunity.

You would want to hope we are going after Butts strongly now if so.

We cannot enter the season with just Lobb & JOD as KPD with Buss & Gardner behind them (or with them) and expect to be any chance of contending.
Butts is just as decent one on one, younger and will cost a little less. Not fussed if we missed on Wilkie and gained him.

Not fussed if we miss Wilkie. If he makes the choice to stay, than all respect to him for that. Saints are not in the Premiership window, and won't win one before he retires. Not often players turn down life changing cash offers, so good to see loyalty still exists in footy. Saints are again over paying for B grade and injury prone players. It bit them on the ass last time, and will again this time. Their only saving grace is they have finally looked to be drafting better.

Glad the club was bold enough to make a bid of the nature which Wilkie obviously considered.

Shows we are happy to be aggressive this trade period.
But Saints fans would say how dare we go after a contracted player, we only did that because we were salty about missing out on Silvagni

If true, it's another year, another failed target. At some point you'd hope we're doing a comprehensive review of our processes, from player ID to communication to offers (both contractual and trade). We can't keep missing our top targets every year. It's particularly striking when you consider how big of a player movement period this is shaping up to be for both contracted and uncontracted players.

Has anyone got Steven May's number?

Assuming you meant Barrass, well Hawthorn were always going to be a more attractive proposition than us.

As for Wilkie, it was the Saints that gave him a chance as a mature age rookie so I don't mind that he wanted to stay loyal. The fact we got this far probably meant our process worked reasonably well.
