Yes good interview. The discussions about why players choose to stay or go, only going after players who are actually better than what we already have and not having time to correct the media when we're (more often than not) linked with a player incorrectly were all good perspective.

I'd be interested to hear from the head of high performance or whatever we call our fitness guy as well, hopefully we're not headed for another soft tissue injury crisis next season!

Budarick is a good start. I know it probably means JJ gets the tap on the shoulder but i would rather we keep him for one more year. Think there would be value in that as proven depth and keeping Footscray strong (like we did with Duryea, Jones and what Gardners role has been for some time).

As much as we bang on about the KPD issue - and god help us if we don’t address it - our ability to defend ground balls in our D50 has been diabolical since Doc declined.

Watching our collection of third talls, Dale, JJ and Bramble try to stop small forwards or generally dangerous ground ball situations has been painful.

Imagine any of our current defenders in a 1:1 with Charlie Cameron

in the dying stages of a final?? Getting a competitive, fast defender in there will do a lot of good.

As for tall defenders. I also think dismissing certain options because we have one of the top VFL key defenders is funny. Like asking to go to McDonald’s and mum tells you we have food at home. Crossley has been the best vfl ruck for years, and it doesn’t mean anything, as we saw in the practice match. And I was hopeful that he would go well there. But that was well and truly put to bed when Essendon, playing the corpse of Todd Goldstein

, didn’t use any of their three midseason draft picks on him. Anyway, the point here isn’t about Crossley. The relationship between vfl performances and afl level capabilities is not always clear. Don’t need to rag on the player I’m obviously referring to, just saying that like Crossley, his vfl dominance is irrelevant when we have enough of a sample size, combined with his age and profile, to know that playing him at AFL level is going to harm more than help our attempts to win games. So maybe we should broaden our horizons and look at players with traits that are more likely to translate to afl level, even if they aren’t making the vfl team of the year or whatever.

The other factor that should be on the mind of our list management team is how fast Liam Jones

in 2023, they don’t have the athleticism and speed to leap, spoil, recover and defend, or to close down space when we turn it over. We would need to be a lot more defensively minded in how we set up, which flies against how Bevo wants to coach.

It doesn’t have to be a Wilkie or a Barrass, as good as they would have been, we aren’t a mile off it. Even small-medium upgrades like Budarick can do a lot for us. it’s ok to have young talent to fall back on but there has to be some level of urgency for the sake of Bont and Libba. Think they’ve given enough to the club to deserve more bold attempts to actually move the needle and, if we don’t want to take big swings to get into premiership contention, even just winning a final. 4 years is an unacceptable drought for the talent we have. Time to get going.

We all know this but it was good to hear it from him.

It would be very interesting to see how much better it makes our current back six if we did structure up differently
