There's a difference between "random" and best available.
Your club in 2017 thought Tom Stewart wasn't better than what the club already had. Turns out they were wrong. Plenty more examples exactly like this: Sam Collins, Mark Keane, Luke Ryan, Jeremy McGovern, etc.

Your defenders got massacred by Fremantle in the final round and somehow you are still arguing against the idea of selecting the best available defender. This is under the pretext that they're not better than your current options, even though your club has probably passed on dozens of quality defenders over the past 10 years in the belief they didn't improve you enough. Strange rationale.

What you said only makes sense if you assume that each club has perfect information that the next player that's available to them is 100% guaranteed to be the best out of all of those players, which is ridiculous

Who’s the best available defender this off-season? If there was anyone available, we’d be all over it.

The list management team knows it’s a weakness, hence the 4.5 mil offer to Wilkie.

The club consistently drafts best available, and have been targeting defenders at the draft. Busslinger, Jaques, Gallagher, Freijah and Croft were all taken in the last 3 years, and either projected to be defenders at AFL level, or played there in their draft year. Luke Cleary, who played most games this year, was also taken the draft before that.

Show me the evidence that Dogs aren’t taking best available? You have absolutely no idea
