Hope he likes the taste of protein bars as he’s going to have to get much stronger to be our full back. Really hope he can make it.
Unpopular opinion: I don't think Buss is our full back. I think he's our CHB and JOD is the FB. The third spot for the future will either be one of Croft/Sellwood/Walker or not on the list yet.

Our defence wasn't that bad this year most of it was structure and lack of genuine small defender
It was statistically one of the worst in the league.

Lobb is not a one on one defender he is an interceptor ... but he is going to be played a one on one defender next year again.

God help us when we get a single injury down there

JOD's best games this year were both deep on Hogan really think he can take it as his own after another preseason

10 teams conceded more points then us which given we play under a roof most weeks suggests you are wrong

JOD's best games have come almost exclusively as the deepest defender for years. It's just that he's been forced to play it before he was ready.

The question to ask is: where is the improvement going to come from?

Hopefully having little to no injuries will help. Naughton and Weightman getting a full preseason. Bont not being out for 6 games. Croft in the team from start. A lot of hoping that Hynes and Sellwood break into the team. Budarick to our defence.

But is that really enough to get us into the 8? I don’t see any of the bottom 6 rising above us, though history shows usually one bottom 4 side rises into the top 8 per season.

I think Fremantle and Collingwood are the most likely to fall out the 8. But are our improvements enough to overtake them?

I think some people are incorrectly mistaking effort / intention and results.

The team might have worked around the clock all year and really tried to get something done, but fundamentally it doesn’t matter and THAT is what’s not good enough.

There’s no room in elite sport for rewarding simply having a go, you need results. That is all that matters and again we haven’t fixed a glaring issue, pretty simple.

This is the problem with not bringing anyone in as neither Buss or JOD are full backs (in my opinion anyway). I’m a bit harsh on JOD as I think he has some limitations, but I think he could make it as a number 2/3 defender. Would love to be proven wrong and have him make a big jump this year.

Stop defending the club people are allowed opinions is a bit contradictory no?
You're defending the club for the sake of it and shooting down anyone trying to say we needed a key defender.

"The Dogs are hellbent on bringing in a gun key defender. If they can't they are not going to settle for a second or third grader, they want a star." - Tom Morris

Better tell the club they don't need one

Where am I doing that?

We need a good Key Defender yes we tried there isn't one available having a sook saying our season is now over is a large overreaction given we have 2 young developing keys

1). Tweaks to the defensive game plan.
2). Improvement of JOD, Busslinger, Davidson, Freijah, Sanders, Davidson, Croft, Jacques, Hynes, Cleary, A Jones & Dolan.
3). Return of Weightman.
4). Reduction of injuries to stars (Darcy, Bont).
3). The only older players that may decline is Libba & maybe Lobb.

We must remember that whilst we were disappointing at times, our biggest losing margin was 22 points. It's certainly not time to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

There is plenty of room for improvement across the board internally.

Playing dumb pointing out facts?

We were within 5 points of Freo and 16 off Brisbane the premiers
Irrelevant. North drew with Brisbane. I guess they aren’t far off if either. Home away results in singular instances are not indicative of overall and end of year performance. Scores fluctuate. That’s why we look at overall season progress instead of picking one moment where we looked good.

The thing with Buss and JOD and Lobb to a degree but none of em are experienced defenders,

Maybe getting May For a year or two to help teach them is the way to go?

If you look at all the young key backs and forwards they are always paired with experienced players in those positions, we don’t have that

Who said our season "is over"?

Pointing out a single injury is going to be a big issue down there is fundamentally correct. That is not using the words "season over" now is it.

If the club fixes how the team defends it might not be as big of an issue but who has any confidence that will happen

Lobb only lost 13% of his defensive 1v1s in 2024. He’s not as bad as many make out.
