Then we do a deal with Port where we take him under FA and then we trade with them what our offer would be for their FA compo pick. It makes no sense for the two clubs to mutually agree to something but not acquire the compo and somehow split it between ourselves in a deal.
This makes so much sense and after it’s done should be the deal that makes the AFL scrap FA compensation picks.

Small difference though, we probably don’t get their FA comp pick for just what our offer would have been but likely a bit more so as to, as you say, “split” the value of the pick that the AFL had just magic’d into existence.

For example if we’re prepared to pay 2026 R1 + 2027 R1 + 2028 R1 for Butters then surely we’d be prepared to throw in more to also get their early R1 compensation, maybe adding 2027 R2 and 2028 R2:
  • Port sell it as getting 3 x 1st and 2 x 2nds (obv includes the TAS draft)
  • We sell it as trading those picks for Butters plus an early 1st rounder which we then use with our 2026 2R to try an match as many of El Souki, Marial, West, Cooney as we can.

We could trade our next 3 1st round pick to get Butters 🧈, then resupply our picks by way of colonel to tassie. I recon tassie will trade 2 top 10 picks at the minimum, more if the colonel is tearing it up.
Agree. That's the play if Sanders if going to Tassie (providing he first signs a 2 year or more extension with us at the end of 2026).

I reckon you sign up sanders until tassie comes in. Even if out of contract tassie will pay. Subsequently it protects other assets mainly Darcy and freija
Tassie don’t have to pay for OOC players (over a 2 year window) but can sign them as if they were unrestricted free agents. Interestingly they can only sign 1 per club and I think that covers FAs too, not just non-FA OOCs, so they couldn’t do what Saints did this year and sign 2 players from Carlton without 1 being a trade.

The AFL should be giving much better compensation for non-FA OOC players because the existing club didn’t get the same benefit of 8-years service or the ability to contract into having the FA protected/restricted.

Needs to be a 3 year extension or he can still just join Tassie without a trade at the end of 2028
2028 is Tassie's first year playing - so if he is to be a foundation player, a 2-year extension is needed with the Bulldogs (at a minimum). Sanders currently comes out of contract at the end of 2026 and can't be selected by Tassie until the end of the 2027 season. A one-year extension would see him out of contract at the end of 2027 - to be avoided at all costs. If they want him, they will surely take him at the end of 2027, so he is part of the inaugural team.

I remember 2016 /17 a lot of posters were calling for English to play wing, Bev is so stubborn we'll never know if it would work .
You'd almost think he was in charge and is deliberately ignoring us

Reckon Mason Cox can play full back

What do we think about taking Lual / still not signed by Essendope? Playing on our VFL would be much better dev than the dopes? Really wanted him before they took him / not really a need but atm our small defenders are Buderick, JJ, Bramble. Sellwood and Dale are a bit bigger and don’t have the speed.

I am happy we kept Buku. I still see him as a decent third forward and can go back as a third back. He has got better each year and if he gets into the gym and uses it to build more confidence to crash in - he adds something. Not best 22 but we are one injury away from playing him - so he will play 20 games for us.

How much do we know about Scobie from WA. Handsome wraps as a good fullback?
