I wish he did kick it more because he is an above average kick.
Should be a focus for him in the pre season.
The odd thing about his season is that early he was much more attacking and willing to go by foot.

It was only later in the year that he seemed to regressed to the mean of predominantly going by hand. And he looked the worse for it and the reason that people are currently taking their pot shots and questioning his future in the side.

I suspect this was a result of him being used to plug holes in the side, instead of playing in his natural game in a position that best suits his skillset.

A position that currently has a Libba shaped impediment in his way. I won't even contemplate the possibility of a Butters shaped one just yet.

Since JUH 2020 national draft subsequently a debacle none of the dogs doing we have not had many high picks the exception Sam Darcy under the father son. How do we rate them.

2021

Pick 2 Sam Darcy A massive stand out
Pick 43 Arty Jones Jury out next season will decide if he was value pick at 43
Pick 61 Luke Cleary At 61 he has been a good pick and although probably only a solid citizen still has an upside.

2022
Pick 13 Jed Busslinger Currently a failure at 13 although next season a make or break.
Pick 24 Charlie Clarke A Massive failure
Pick 39 Harvey Gallagher Jury out next season to determine his value

2023
Pick 56 Ryley Sanders The kid can play but at pick 6 he needs a break out season to prove his value
Pick 15 Jordan Croft The father/ son shows great potential after some bad luck with injury
Pick 45 Joel Freijah Absolute gem at 45, do the draft again he would be top 10
Pick 47 Lachlan Smith Yet to play AFL jury out, ruckman take time but needs to prove himself soon
Pick 55 Aiden O'Driscoll Unfortunate injury ended his career before it started

2024

Pick 20 Copper Hynes Like most of 2024 too early to say but shows promise
Pick 29 Lachie Jacques Yet to play but shows promise in the 2s
Pick 31 Josh Dolan Like most of 2024 too early to say but shows promise
Pick 51 Sam Davidson The Doc mature age recruit good first season a steal at 51
Pick 61 Luke Kennedy Yet to play but shows promise in the 2s

2025 So far

Pick 21 Lachlan Carmichael ??

So in the 4 drafts not counting 25 since the JUH draft we have had 16 picks in the national draft with 14 still on the list. Charlie Clarke the only failure and the unfortunate injury to Aiden O'Driscoll.

The four standout picks for me are Sam Darcy, Joel Freijah, Jordan Croft and Sam Davidson with Luke Cleary value. That leaves 9 to prove their worth and next season a make or break for probably all of them except the 2024 crop.
I’m extremely confident that Josh Dolan will be added to your list of 4 after next year

A great assessment Norm.

Confidence is a crazy thing.

His form in the first half of the year was the best of his short career. Looked great as the spare forward rolling up to stoppage, delivering inside 50 and kicking goals. Playing on instinct.

Weirdly, he was shifted onto a wing, a role that doesn’t suit his game whatsoever and as a result his spot in the team was under the microscope. Then the trepidation kicks in. Often opting for the safe handball, getting burnt in transition.

Was severely misused in my opinion. I hope the coaching staff gives him a role where he can thrive. The wing is not that role.

His form was better but he was handballing just as much in the first half of the year as the second. He was just getting more of the ball.

His first half was better than his second, but that’s to be expected with young players. Freijah had a similar form dip in the second half of the year.

There are two reasons other clubs are coming hard for him, and that we were not entertaining trades under any circumstance.

1) the Tassie lure is overblown and unlikely.

2) He’s projecting to be a superstar midfielder.

Freijah and Sanders are our Bont and Libba of the next generation, and if we can get Butters too that will be a bonus.

Everything coming through my ears is that Butters is a lock to be a Bulldog player next year

Didn't want a trade this year due to the Merrett kick back
I've spoke to an ITK I trust at the club and this is what I'm hearing as well. Huge positivity bordering on almost guarantee that he will come. Also had a very large smile on his face as he was telling me.

I like the sentiment as I am naturally an optimist but that’s a massive call. Bont and Libba are next level.

I think he means more role type than comparing their levels. Freijah is your 190cm plus drive it forward type mid, Sanders is the inside extractor, just need the fast speedy two way type, which Butters and Richards are.

Though I've always thought our midfields, despite many years of being highly rated amongst the league. Have usually been slow as. So it would be interesting to see a midfield with both Richards and Butters, should the latter happen.

Yes I meant the roles, hopefully they can reach those heights, but if Freijah has a career half as good as Bont’s we will be happy

Think you are under selling Butters. He would be one the biggest acquisitions in AFL history.

Butters seems to be leaning on Boak alot about Boak's decision he had years ago to go to Geelong which he turned down. He is also leaning on Ollie Wines for advice.

Might not be a given if he's listening to those two.

We be big but would be around 5-6th for mine in the last 25 years can maybe argue him or Cameron but Cameron was 2 x AA and Coleman winner

Franklin/Ablett/Judd/Cameron/Dangerfield

Also in conversation
Curnow/Goddard/Neale/Lynch

Butters definitely in that first tier.

Other than providing reasons that were the reason why we drafted him so high in the first place (ie, personality traits and professionalism), what do you think makes this true?

His form was better but he was handballing just as much in the first half of the year as the second. He was just getting more of the ball.
Yes, this is correct, and people like making claims as if we don't have the stats to back it up and make evidence.

His kick % of all disposals was 30% in the first 10 games. In the 2nd half of the year, the last 11 games he played, his kick % actually increased to 34%, like you said, he was just winning less of the ball.

Easily disproved that he was playing better because he was kicking the ball more in the 1st half of the year. He was just playing better in general outside of that (largely through just winning a lot of the ball whatever the nature of winning it was), even if the weaknesses were identical.

The adoption of baseball style caps generally over the past few decades has been a boon for skin specialists and melanoma surgeons. These caps offer little or no protection from damaging UV sun rays. In this country we should all be emulating Barnaby Joyce (heaven forbid!) and wearing wide rim akubras or stetsons.
I wear them. I have two Akubras. When I was in the Army, we did some activities in Brisbane with the US and during the down time I was wearing one. US team loved it, Aussies were a mix. I love them.

I am also hearing his overwhelming desire is the dogs but premierships success is an equally important factor. He is desperate for premiership success so unfortunately hawks are still in play. If we don’t play finals in 2026 and hawks continue their climb and play in a PF or GF don’t be surprised if hawks leapfrog us again.

Unless we do something about our defence I don't reckon Butters (as good as he is) moves the needle all the much for us

Butters will be at Hawks or Geelong but I'm not sad about it. I think the emergence of Sellwood will be more important to our success.

JoD looks bigger and Hynes is running better. I'm expecting big things from both this year.

Budarick looking sharp on track - he's going to be vital for us this season.
