Over the same period Hawthorn have brought in Gunston, Spangher, Lake, NcEvoy, Frawley, Orourke and Fitzpatrick. Slightly less active than us.

Geelong - Rivers, Caddy, McIntosh, Clark, Stanley, Blease, Dangerfield, Henderson, Selwood, Smith. More active than us but they've loaded up big a couple of times including last year.

Freo - Dawson, Pearce, Sylvia, Gumbleton, Bennell. Much less active than us and with bugger all success.

Sydney - Morton, Armstrong, Walsh, Tippett, Franklin, Laidler, Derickx, Sinclair, Talia. About the same as us but apart from the big two, the rest are all spare parts players.

We only arguably need only 1 A-grade midfielder to finish off our team so I hope we are going very hard at the moment for such a player. We tried last year with Redden and that failed (up to this point), might come good next year and give us more strength in the middle.

I don't really have a problem with the club being quiet on its trading targets and plans.

However the disappointing thing for me is that historically we don't seem to go hard at the A grade targets. I'm not talking about any and all players, but the ones that would clearly add value to the team. Now I guess the caveat is that we do go after these players, behind the scenes, but time and time again we are unsuccessful. However that again is in itself probably as much (if not more) of a worry.
No disrespect - but how would you know ?

I don't think Redden was ever expected to be the A-grader we need. In my mind he was a Selwood replacement at best.

1 A grade mid yes....but 2 A grade mids would be phenomenal...plus Hogan or Lobb to ice the cake...

None taken.

The answer is I don't know. Its a guess or assumption based on the information at hand namely that more often than not something always leaks before, during or after about Club X chasing or being chased by Player Y. I can't remember the last time we heard anything to do with the Eagles and a really top end player.

Now I did caveat my thoughts with the fact that there could be a number of reasons for this (e.g. we enquire early, were told that there was no chance Player Y moves to WA/WCE so we forget about it) or maybe we are just good at keeping our business behind closed doors.

Well by that logic you could argue that he was brought in to have zero positive net effect on the midfield. Given that he was one of the more prolific mids (not world beating A-grader) at the Lions, I think the club thought he would bring the same form into our team that would elevate our prospects this year. I'm hoping with the addition of a potential A-grader during the trade period plus the emergence of Duggan et al we might be able to contend in the near future before our KPP stars retire. Or maybe GWS and the bulldogs will dominate for a few years to come?

Ok, tell us how you'd go about getting two A grade mids and one of Hogan or Lobb assuming the players involved are happy to move to WA

Trust me WC have been more active than people realize.

Jumping on a plane every 2nd week is a very big issue in an increasingly professional workplace

1/..that was me and Ginnas outside your room last night

2/..A grade mids...cut our shit and buy them.
HOGAN/LOBB...cut our shit and buy them.

..easy .

Our problem is we worry too much about how we are viewed in a corporate sense instead of making tough decisions that are motivated by one goal....WINNING!

I will take your word for it.. given that I have a sneaky suspicion that you're actually Trevor Nisbett (or possibly Alan Cransberg).

Can I suggest that you (a) cut out the crude personal bullshit and (b) maybe attempt to do the slightest bit of research into how the draft, trade system and salary cap work?

"Cut our shit and buy great players" just isn't how it works.

Ok...fair enough...

Are you able to tell me how these clubs buy guns:
SYDNEY
GEELONG
HAWKS
..I personally believe its due to superior management.

They got a gun license from the Govenment but under WA gun laws such a license is much harder to get

Sydney put through a ridiculous 9-year deal for Franklin.

Geelong got lucky because Dangerfield wanted to move home.

Which guns have Hawthorn bought? Other than Burgoyne, most of the guys they've brought in have been role-player types at their old clubs.

All good points FiveStrings

Also if I remember rightly Hawthorn gave up 2 first round draft picks at the time for Burgoyne and Burgoyne still had to nominate Hawthorn for the deal to get through.

Gunston was a young kid at the time. 1st round draft pick was given up for him.

Gibson was a good player at North before he went across but hardly a superstar.

Frawley had been injured for years.

Sydney was also lucky to get Tippet nominating them publically and forcing the move through that way. In practice for a move to go through you need said player to nominate your club i.e. have to be willing to go there.

As an Bond alluded to reality is why would you want to fly across the country every second week when there are clubs who don't have to but are willing to pay the same.
