Re-watched Rioli's highlights and i have some what changed my mind (even tho its only a 5 mins snapshot of him). we need a few flashy types and at this stage we only have jetta, nic nat and karpany to an extent. Rioli really turned the game on in the second quarter for NT in that high light and its very much like cyril in a sense. Daniel as good endurance as well and could possibly be developed to play wing more regularly.
Did you watch the draft watch video as well ?

Brayden Hackett

Ht – 181 Wt - 67

Coming into the Champs I had heard nothing of Hackett and it took a couple of games for me to really pick up on him. It was when I saw him live that I realised how much of a gem this kid could be. He is an inside mid who is very undeveloped at the moment but managed to hold his own very nicely in a very undermanned WA midfield. WA had a few “names” in their midfield who were up for selection this year but Hackett outplayed every one of them.

I like his work around the clearances. He is always on the move and will fly in and attack the contests. He moves through traffic really nicely and has good clean hands. He has good spatial awareness in the clearances and pretty good body strength for such a slight frame. His hands are quick and he makes decent use of the ball when he wins it on the inside.

One of the things which impressed me live was how much ground he covered. He worked hard forward and back and was always around it and where he needed to be. He was working when other bigger names had stopped and let their heads drop. His defensive chase is good and he can create turnovers in the open field.

When he gets the ball in a bit of space he has some class about him and will take good options and hit them. He spreads pretty well and whilst he is not a ball magnet he gets enough of the ball. There will need to be a bit of work on his spread immediately after the contest. With that said he seems to have a good feel for the game and looks to be a natural footballer with a high football IQ. He will get out and bounce the ball when he has the chance and is a nice deliverer into 50. In the WAFL Colts he averaged 20 disposals, 4 tackles and 4 clearances a game. At the Champs he only got it 15 times per game but I do not think he was in the middle for all of the games he played.

I was a bit disappointed with his testing at the Combine. Not unexpectedly he tested very well in the 3km run (in the top 5 overall) at just over 13 minutes but the rest was pretty disappointing. He is a country boy and might not have trained for the testing like the others but I was expecting better. His beep was okay at 14.3 but again I did expect better. His 20m and agility testing were very disappointing for a guy who plays with reasonable pace and elusiveness.

Hackett is a player who I think could really blossom in an AFL environment if he can deal with the training load. He has a lot of natural talent and feel for the game and if he could get his physical attributes up to the level they could be I think he could easily be one of the best players to come out of this draft. The ceiling is very high for him but then so is the floor which I why he is so far down most mock drafts. He is physically behind most others, did not test well and has not shown the consistent great play making ability to make him a must draft. I would certainly be prepared to take a punt on him if I was picking about this stage but I could understand teams letting someone else take the risk.
I thought he was one of WA`s best v Metro in Melb ,found a bit of the ball and used it pretty good .Also for a guy small and skinny he was quite tenacious . His size and playing in a team that was hammered a lot has probably killed all the draft talk about WA players .

Game situation is way different to combine test.
Completely agree but they can only prove themselves with the opportunities they are given. I think when you perform well across all aspects in the testing then it has to have some relevance. I doubt they would go to the effort of organising a combine if it didn't give recruiters some useful additional information in choosing/ranking players.

Rioli's endurance is what surprised me the most (which is why I think we'll probably take him if he's available at our pick). In the U18s games I thought he performed really well apart from being a little inconsistent. He has the most x-factor potential of any of the draftees I have had a look at. He isn't a midfielder so has less of the ball and therefore we have less to judge him by. The problem with both he and Lovell is they both played in division 2 so we didn't really get a sense of well they would perform against the better teams/players. But they both did clearly stand out imo.

For Lovell I think the testing was also important in proving his abilities. Unofficially breaking the record for the agility test puts him in good company -> Stephen Hill, Yeo, Danyle Pearce and van Berlo. His endurance also surprised me and must also put him on our recruiter's consideration list. His performance in the game against NT was superb. He perhaps doesn't have Rioli's full x-factor potential but am excited about his prospects of becoming a pretty explosive inside mid eventually. Not sure I'd get as excited if his pathway was as an outside mid at AFL level. So I no longer agree with the assessment he could play AFL immediately as I can't see him slotting in to any team either inside or outside in his first year - AFL is a whole different world to U18s in the midfield. But that possibly makes him a better candidate for us because we could develop him for a year or two before he debuts (he would unlikely crack our team even if he was ready).

I think Rioli will be lucky to last to our first pick. I think Lovell will still be available at our second pick. I think we need a dynamic small forward more than we need another midfielder type. For all these reasons I think Rioli is a more likely pick for our first. But I certainly wouldn't be upset if we took Rioli and then Lovell. But then again I wouldn't mind Cunington and Morgan or Cole and Fiorini or Partington and Crocker. Looking forward to who we choose in a few days - who knows what Crazy Vozzo has in the works really?

James Parsons (24)

Eastern Ranges/Norwood

Height: 189cm

Weight: 85kg

Parsons is not a huge ball winner, but what he does with it is deadly. He’s one of the best kicks in this draft class. He plays through half forward, but clubs may see him as a big bodied midfielder in the future.

"NAB AFL Academy member who has elite speed and his long kicking is a feature of his game. His performance against Vic Country in game one was the highlight of his five matches at the NAB AFL U18 Championships."

He's only 17, looked it in the U18 Champs vid. Could be the Duggan of last year.

Would rather Jordan Snadden, who is very similar player.
But Jordan is quicker and more agressive at the footy.

Has Rioli spent time in Vic?
http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-ne...g-in-the-family-business-20151008-gk40uw.html
Rioli lived for a few months with Lisa Goodes - Adam's mother - until a spot opened up in the boarding house. She was a huge support, though he was visiting home when Adam came by to visit. "My friend was there, and he called me up to say he was with him," he said. "I was so jealous."

He didn't miss out entirely, though. Rioli was with Jake Neade on the day he got a phone call telling him he had been picked up by Port Adelaide and he played for the same school side as Liam Duggan, Dan Butler and Brenton Payne last year, all of whom had their names called out.

This year, he made his way into the North Ballarat TAC Cup team, learning more every week about what he needed to do if he wanted the AFL clubs to take a good look at him too. "I got a lot of confidence with my tackling and confidence with the way I have to run and carry the footy and try to take the game on," Rioli said. "I really liked playing footy this year. I have a lot of work to go but I feel like I've improved almost everything."

Do we go for Darcy Cameron or Mason Shaw in the Rookie Draft?

I would like to see us take both. Good for us and it would make me chuckle how devoid the Frockers are in that area. On the surface the Frockers appear to be disinterested which is really strange. Oh well.

Just had my first look into Gary Buckenaras phantom draft. he has us picking josh dunkley at our first pick. However, he has nominated the swans. If what do the swans have to give up if we want dunkley?
