Yeh, there's some spuds picked there for sure, was just trying to make the point that with the proposed trade we'd be trading Masten for the chance of picking up a quality player. Sure it's a risk but I see Masten as expendable anyway.
It's an unpopular opinion around here but I don't think Masten gets the appreciation he deserves - he's a better player than he is given credit for

No, I know, but like I said if he's going to cost us pick 30ish then I'd rather use that pick in the draft on someone who has the potential to be better than Ah Chee.
If that's the rationale, you'd never trade middling picks for depth.

Obviously no gaurantees but as I said before with Ah Chee you know what you're getting and it's probably not someone who's going to be running through our first choice midfield in 3 years time, pick 30 or whatever could be.
He's still reasonably young and I think you're overvaluing that pick based on a best-case scenario.

I just don't see a real need to improve our midfield depth at the moment, if anything it's our key position depth where we could have issues if Brown & McKenzie both leave. I see a need to improve our starting midfield but I think the young guys coming through will provide more than enough midfield depth next year.

Maybe, he's 23 though and most midfielders who are any good show something well before that.
Ahch showed plenty towards the end of last season, but has stagnated this year.

I would have said yes last trade period, but I'm not convinced we should do it now.

For all those kissing Lobb on the knobb .

lobb 2016
26 goals from 22 games

Mccarthy 2015
35 goals from 20 games

mccarthy was also 3 years younger at that time
I suppose lobb did get 6 hit outs a game

lobb will cost 2 first rounders and 550k+
Mccarthy will cost a second and 350k

Our starting midfield has been the problem for most of the year. Sitting in the WAFL we've still got Duggan & Redden who should really be in our starting 22 next year, this pushes Hutchings and another mid out of the team. Then there's Nelson, Adamson (who I rateand I think will push for selection next year), and the young guys we drafted this year, Cole could push through the middle, Partington looks good if he bulks up in the off-season and I like the look of Mutimer as well. Then you've got whoever we draft this year, if it's SPP he looks ready made for AFL. That's more than enough imo.

What about David Swallow? Could we shake him loose?

I have a feeling it would be another case where we'd pay overs for a contracted player.
I'd be happy to chase him because I think he improves our midfield, assuming he's fit. But yeh, probably cost a fair bit, our first and McKenzie I'd think.

Masten may be named some times on HFF but he
picks up most of his possies at HBF and wing . Along with gaff our best 2 way runner always getting back and helping our rebound from defence .
At his best he can help us be a top team and is worth more to us than a 20s pick in the draft who may end up crap .
Both dug and parto have a long way to go to fill masto shoes
So how does Duggan an Partington get a game and where? Both are developing mids and you start those as roaming half forwards. Masten doesn't hurt teams with pace or by skills, he accumulates.

I suppose we will have injuries but as i said there are a number of younger players gunning for Mastens place. At 27 and with Gold Coasts situation his value likely won't become higher.

Yeh I know what you guys are saying, I just think he can be replaced.
By who ?
Duggan and Nelson haven't shown they can accumulate enough

Redden plays his best on the inside

Partingtons big issue is his 2 way running

Jetta can't accumulate or 2 way run

Cole hasn't shown he can transition to full time midfield yet .

I don't think any will produce consistently well as masto until at least 2018 .
We seriously lack outside players that are elite runners and can accumulate outside of our best 22 .

Does he accumulate that much? 22 disposals a game isn't exactly elite in that regard. It doesn't have to be one player coming in and getting those same possessions anyway, you'd hope we have multiple midfielders who step up and contribute more next year than they did this year.
