It’s been 4 weeks. Let’s put a lid on it. We lose to Essendon and Richmond. We are
2-4 and heading to miss finals again. I’m not a pessimist, I’m a realist.
Pessimists overwhelmingly tend to consider themselves realists. There are many on this board who from my vantage seem quite pessimistic, but if you were to ask them would describe themselves as logical, rational, realists. Not saying you are one, in fact I’ve not even looked at what you are responding to, just more a general comment on the nature of self reflection and relativism.

How dare we draft and develop a Key Position Player.
Oh we need to draft and develop a key position player. No doubt we're in agreement on that.

But you were specifically discussing throwing a first year key position player into the seniors. That's not developing a player. That's throwing them to the wolves. It's what Carlton are doing to Weitering. And Melbourne did to Jack Watts.

To ensure that doesn't happen we'll need to look at mature key position options as well as drafting them. So that we can allow our draft age key positions to develop until they are ready to step in. That or we put a lot of faith in Reid and Dunn having two plus years left in them and performing that role. That's a real risk I reckon.

I never said that. I said if they were good enough to play they play. Weitering was so far above the pack last year and Carlton knew it and debuted him.

Yeah perhaps. But you'd think two keys and a third tall would be a good mix. I reckon they'd be more inclined to deal on McCartin given Bruce is proven and the concussion issues. I would love Bruce mind you.

If I were to pick anyone from any team though it would be Ben Brown. Great team player. Can ruck the forward minutes. Would fit into rather than dominate the forward structure. It kills me we had the opportunity to snag him cheap in his draft year. And that he re-signed last year.
Was obvious when he was at werribee that he was worth a punt

Does anyone know if Ben Brown was even on Dekkas's list of players the year he got drafted by North?

He was pick 47 by the way in the 2013 Draft.

Pick 6 = Mathew Scharenberg
Pick 10 = Nathan Freeman
Pick 65 = Tom Langdon
Pick 77 = Johno Marsh

Rookie Elevation = Sam Dwyer & Oxley

My concern is if we have to go two draft age key positions we won't start seeing them pull their weight for 4 years. We may need to go down that route but I reckon we need a ready made key position player if it's possible.
McLarty showing in year 2 that he could likely step up and have an impact. Still a number of years off producing what we hope will be his best but they can still play a role. Noughton this year another who has done it in his 1st year. Seems more dependant on the player.

He'd been overlooked a draft or 2 before that as well. North's affiliation with the Bees likely got that draft pick done.

It depends on where you are on the ladder. Carlton’s problem is that they have no bigger bodies to protect the younger guys coming in. Basically they are just getting smashed at every contest and will continue to do so until they can’t take no more. But they don’t have much choice atm because there’s no one else worth playing. Like I said another thread it’s a vicious circle for them.

Then you have teams like Sydney and Geelong that have a couple of young players doing really well, because they have the likes of Kennedy, Parker, Jack and then Selwood, Danger etc.
Its where teams bring in mature no names to play roles or wise old heads like Dunn still capable of good footy but at the end, whilst the youth get some shelter from it. They could do it but wont as it involves handing over draft picks that they want.

Wouldn't mind having a look at the Doggies young key backs. They have such an over supply of talls. Kieren Collins is the one I'd like at. Was pretty highly regarded draft year and just hasn't got a chance. Won't get a game ahead of guys like Adams, Naugton, Roughead, Trengove etc
