With looming certainty that Chris Mayne's contract is an absolute deadweight liability, I'm wondering whether we could look at an American-sport style salary dump trade. Hawthorn definitely moved towards the callous business-like approach to dealing with players last year and I think as we become more used to free agency, clubs will view salary cap space as more of an asset.

With that in mind, would you all be accepting of this approach? I.e. it would look something like Chris Mayne + 2nd rounder/player etc to Team A with cap space for a nominal asset in return, i.e. 5th/6th rounder.
I'd be giving Freo Fas for free if they took Mayne back.

Problem is clubs can bank unused cap and use it in latter years so why would a club take Maybe and lose some of their bank ( i know you are saying they are paying his salary for our second rounder but, the lose of banking is a serious factor).
Yes, the cap bank is an interesting tweak to the system. However, I think it's capped at approx. 5%. Correct me if I'm wrong.

It's just a mindset shift to realise that cap space is a valuable commodity. Especially for us given the need to make a run at Lynch next year.

Happens all the time in the NBA. This offseason, the Brooklyn Nets utilised their abundance of cap space to bring in young assets from clubs looking to open up space.

The AFL will catch up. I just wanted to gauge how fans of just the AFL feel about it. I like the movement in the NBA because poor situations turn around so quickly. However, I also hate how there is absolutely no loyalty and you can never really grow an attachment to players.

I'd do it but it'll be hard to find a taker with Mayne. Apply the same philosophy to some of our other players in the approximate 250-350k bracket with greater trade currency and you might achieve the same thing. Think Aish/Broomhead/Greenwood/Fasolo/Langdon.

It is an interesting point you make.

Although the Nets are an all time rubbish team as a result of the Celtics bending them over a few years back.

Now they are rubbish, and are giving up their own premium picks so are stuffed.

So yes they took on some outrageous contracts like Mozgov getting 16M for three seasons, Crabbe on 18M for three seasons to actually gain some draft picks.

There are no teams really in that boat in the AFL.

NBA cap discrepancy is also much larger.

In 2017-18, the Cavs and Warriors have team payrolls above 130Mil whilst teams like Philly and Phoenix are hovering around 80Mil and Chicago is presently spending just 65 mil on its roster. AFL teams don't have that disparity.

Would you prefer that or another "quick fix" approach like last year? The organic growth path should have been our play last year leaving massive coin available to us this year without Wells and Mayne. Instead we set ourselves back two years by not being patient. At some stage we need to bite the bullet and sit on our hands!
I don't disagree with you, at all. Clearly the right strategy, yet the man steering the ship has been exuding a different message of recent seasons. With those recruitments as you mentioned a good example.

Pick 6 for Brisbane's 14 and 18.

But better than Lever I'd try and get Balta and O'Brien/Fogarty with those 2 picks and get a pick in for Faz to get Richards.
Pick 6 is valued at 1751 draft points

Lions currently have Port's pick which is Pick 12 not 14

Pick 12 valued at 1268, Pick 18 valued at 985 = 2253

So unless some specific player they want, we would most likely need to cough up more in that scenario say our 3rd round pick

Adelaide has stated that if Jake Lever leaves they will be seeking two first round draft picks
Given their reluctance to meet Carlton's demands on Gibbs they'll no doubt understand if the interest in him drops off as a consequence. I guess that might well be the plan. Doesn't hurt to get an opening bid on record.

The more I think about it, the more I think we should hold onto pick 6 - unless we can use it to get Lynch. No other player being named is worth throwing up that spot in the draft.

I think we need to identify the best KP prospect in the draft pool (who is likely to fall to 6) and hone in on him. (Eg. Brander if thats who our scouts/selectors decide upon).
If (and only if) we are pretty sure he will be available somewhere picks 9-13, then I wouldn't mind a downgrade of pick 6 to two later 1st-rounders, or equivalent, as long as we think it will still get us Brander (for example).

Now, I reckon St Kilda are unlikely to go for a KPP with their picks 7 or 8, (but could easily split it one tall, one small), but then the Doggies could well be looking for a tall forward - so I'm not sure of our chances of hoping someone will fall.
